  • What ever happen to Matt Mills, he has not placed high in an event since Easy retired. Maybe it is true what the other trainers say, he nothing but a one horse wonder.

  • Matt Mill's horses looked natural and free moving - a couple of black horses were taking a close look at the ground thru entire run - such a shame to see potentially beautiful ability "reined" into a hunched up short striding horse that's seems to be overworked and waiting for the next cue. But, as I said in some other comments, I guess that's the in thing, the more hunched up, the higher the score. Prefer the old way. Saw the Finals several times years ago in OKC since I live in the area.

  • pause the video at nine seconds its halarious!!!

  • NICE HORSES!!!! I cant get over how well trained. I ride western as well. Had a few good falls, but Mac never left my side!

  • matt mills is awsome he is training one of my horses i know him very well he is a great trainer and very nice we r good friends

  • the last horse..mm, hes cute. and the little buckskin in there, personal favorite.

this is probably the best reining vedio ive ever seen, it highlights it really well

  • No honest, i have never seen anything like this before. But i have never watched the sport. But it looks lovely, and they all seem to make it look so easy and it must take up a lot of there time training the horses. Its simply amazing, i luv it. xxx

  • they are. my mare spins and turns and doe sliding stops,a dn does barrel racing

  • well you keep up the good work, your parents will be very proud of you.

  • they are.

  • later my friend, and god bless.

  • thank you.

  • Excellent, this is the first time i have ever seen anything like this before. Its just amazing. a horse walking backwards, just WOW. great footage.

  • you mean to say youve never seen a horse back up before?

  • ooops! check above i hit the wrong thing. xxx

  • i wanted to watch something like this cause my horse is learning how to do reining so this should be interesting

  • I just started western, but I'm riding equestrian for almost 6 years now, But is spinning hard to learn? I can do roll-backs speed-checks and straight lines etc, but I'd love to learn spinning!

  • a person doesnt really learn spinning, they learn how to do it on a horse that knows it. either that or a person who knows what they are doing teaches it to a horse.

  • cool..

  • I can say that you also can train a reining horse on a kind way. I saw the hard way but sometimes you have to be hard. And i can say that spinning is usefull at the ranchwork but more like half- spinning. Sliding stops are also naturaly, watch some horses in nature you'll see.

  • if you don't like reining fine but don't ruin it for people who want to learn as much as they can about any equine sport. If you guys want to bitch about a hard sport on horses look at steeplechasing there is a death wise for any horse. These reiners are looked after better than some people they get top vet treatments, feed etc. So please stop ruining peoples look on equine sports let them do there homework and decide for themseleves.

  • galloping and stopping. im not impressed.

i can see how those would be good ranch type skills though.

how is the spinning useful though?

  • I was wondering the same about the spinning. Although I have been a lifelong horsewoman, I know very little about the sport of reining. I can appreciate the agility, the quick response to cues and the willing temperment. So can someone answer about the beed for spinning like that?

  • cause its fast and fun! reining wouldnt be reining without spins

  • ok does anyone HONESTLY know how they get those horses to slide? (i know how they do it, but i just want to see if everyone else does...)

  • I dont really understand your question, dont they just ask the horse to stop--shorten up on the reins and sit back-- and the horse is going so fast it has to slide to keep from launching its rider? maybe there is something Im missing (I dont rein)

  • no my grandma asked a reining trainer how tbey get the horse and they said they literally run the horse into the fencee and the horse has stop otherwise the horse could possibly injure or even kill themselves

  • jesus, you mean when they are training it i assume.i didnt know that. though im sure there are trainers out there that can train a horse with out doing that. but damn, thats awfull

  • yeah. so in that case, enjoy the video everyone!

  • There are bad training techniques in every discipline, and that's terrible if people actually use that to teach a slide. However, the way most people do it is by doing tons and tons of transitions. Canter-stop-backup-canter-stop-backup till the horse is always thinking backwards and at the slightest signal will slam on the brakes.

  • its not all transitions. its just teaching the horse to stop when you quit riding and the slide comes along. fencing also doesnt have to be 'brutal' or abusive. the good trainers just run the horse up to a fence (a tall one that cant be jumped like on the ends of my trainers arena) and make the horse stop exactly when they stop riding it and really sit their butt in the ground.

  • Only people that have no idea about what they are doing, do things like that to horses to make them stop. For us sane people in the world, we train a LOT differently.

  • thats called fenceing and they don't run in to the fence the horse always stop. No we don't teach them to slide that way we teach them to stop when we say whoa and when ever they stop hard we praise them and they learn to stop harder and harder.

  • oh then i shouldn't believe my grandma anymore should i?

  • Yes, essentially. At least on anything that has to do with horses.

  • thank you!!! i second this comment!!! i have seen this done and guess what ppl...IT WORKS espically when you praise the horse!

  • You and your "grandma" have know idea about what reining training is about. Most good people in this world do not "run their horses into fences" to make them stop. Go and research before you start saying stupid things about horse training. I am commenting for myself and all the other horse trainers here.

  • I am honestly serious! My grandma asked!

  • well the trainer probably expected your g-ma to know more than she did. he was probably talking about fencing. thay dont use it is the horse wont stop, they use it (at least in my trainer's case) to keep the horse from anticipating stopping, which is like a 2 point penalty i think, but in no way is it to brutally teach the horse to stop////

  • That is wrong!

  • when you stop, you shouldnt need to use the reins at all unless the horse doesnt respond and you have to correct them. any horse that stops on its hind end (the correct way) and not with the forehand doesnt nessicarily launch the rider, the rider needs to learn how to sit to it. obviously you dont know about reining.

  • I am training some 3 year olds right now and some of them are born to slide! I have one right now who slides 20+feet. Then I have one who I have to do some work on. I just walk or jog around the arena an say woah and put my feet out. When they stop I pet them then back them up a little bit. Then I will do that about 10 times then call it a day. When you run a horse to the wall(fencing) I is to keep them straight and make them go long.

  • This is weird but do you know who the bay is owned by now? I think my trainer has her but sonce i cant find her name anyhere, i cant tell.

    lol

I think she had the best spins though.I didnt like the palomino because his stops were sort compared to the others and also his spins were jerky, though he did sit down really well in the stops :)

  • the second horse (the palimino) had some kick butt stops!

  • That was really great. They all did quite well in my book. I wish there was more video coverage of Tim McQuay though.

  • Yes, in the main arena.

  • is this at the SouthPoint hotel in vegas??

  • matt mills kicks ass

  • the first bays stop was quite jerky compared to the palimino and the black horse good job but :)

  • i think the second horse (palomino) did the best. it like, sat down!

  • En la cala de la charreria se desplasan menos en los lados que el reining. En la punta si les sale mejor pero es porque lo arrancan unos 20 mts y aca son como 70 mts.

  • wow. that very pretty. rening is very beautyful. i love the spin its soooo cool

  • my second event, i love it:)
