My dad owns a 1971 VW Fastback, the later model which isn't as pretty as this model, but it still turns heads. Not many people know that Type 3s even exist. We call it our Poorsche.
I have a 1969 Type 3 Fastback with the factory air conditioning. Those are rare. Type 3s are not as common as Bugs or Busses, but they're not all that rare. I've even seen people giving them away. They are, without a doubt, the best of the old VWs. Best handling, most room, great all the way around.
Be aware when you purchase a rebuilt carburator!; My 66 Fastback catch fire because a faulty metal cilynder part that goes between the main gas entrance on the carb and the rubber hose that connect with the fuel pump, the part goes loose and spill all the gas over the engine.
@rayjones321 Yeah but they're around. My squareback was bought in germany and shipped over by the buyer so you know there has to be a few floating around in the states. I would import one myself if I could afford it. Honestly I plan on it someday.
@rayjones321 I used to see one parked at the house near my bus stop as a kid. For years, I guessed that I had imagined it or that it was a Peugeot or something. Then, I worked with a guy from Puerto-Rico who said that they were coveted there. The one by the bus stop must have been gray-market.
the only problem i have ever had with my fastback was the electric fuel pump. but when it ran i could drive to florida and back to ohio with no problems at all
The motor is in the back under that flap, Libanass. of course it all depends upon the shape it's in. If it is in good shape you can expect close to $3000 that is if the motor runs and not to much rust. good luck
Used to have one in practically that same colour. And the times we confused folk with the 'find the engine' were awesome :D Ours was the 1600E with Bosch injection rather than the TL which had carbs. It was pretty nippy for its time, too. In the end it just died and we never really knew why.
You are right, ha, ha, ha... Because this cars and the bug made Volkswagen almost bankrupt. They wouldn't exist anymore without the GolfI. This car saved the company's life...
For your information, VW sold the sedan until 2003, and is the most succesful car in the history, and type 3 was very good at sales too.. so if you don't know ...
Where on earth are you getting your information? Mindorfan is right. The beetle is the best selling car in history, but starting from from the fifties. By the seventies it and the T2 were increasingly niche and irrelevent to profitability. The type 4 and pursual of old air-cooled technology nearly killed off vw. The Golf/Passat range is what turned it around.
Maybe the sales decreased in the US by the 70's, but in the rest of the world, the air cooled motor cars like the sedan and the transporter were very popular and it menat the main profit for the VW in general...
Our family car was was a 412 variant from 1974 till 1981. As I remember it was voted car of the year in 1972. By about 1974 when its flaws became apparent it was voted worst car of the year. It was great in many ways but it was DISASTROUSLY unreliable. The amount of space was great but there was a price. You had to drop the engine out to do quite basic maintenance. Our clutch failed at least once a year. Though oddly our injection was fine.
This was my mom's car when I was little. I once tried to make it fly by taping "wings" made of newspaper binding strips to the doors, and I liked to take naps on the big shelf behind the rear seat under the window.
He made that ad about a year or two before "The Graduate." The end of this ad got edited out: Dustin Hoffman walks away confused, and a title reads, "Your VW dealer will show you where the motor is." :-D
I have one of these cars sitting in my garage (inherited from Grandpa). It's a 1965. What's it worth?

@maize5 Yeah I drive a 73' Squareback. Type 3's are definitely the red headed step child of the air cooled VW community.
