omg!!?? did i hear a few missed notes. FIrst off before you go banannas Fritz is my Favorite Tenor! I just wished he would have had the opportunity to record more in ITalian for my sake just so I could learn from his phrasing inthe native language. OK OK so the mistake I think comes at 2:01 he starts the melissma and on the third beat of 16th notes it sounds wrong...is it my ear or are they not all there...listen at 2:45 they are all there perfectly. I just asked because its rare 4 him
I think he was one of greatest tenors ever if not the greatest. He just didn't sing in Italian much and passed away at a relatively young age. God rest his soul.
Wunderlich is one of the least criticized tenors I've seen on youtube. =P Maybe it has something to do with how little he is known to the public at large, but it must also have something to do with how flawless he was! :P I can't remember seeing a negative comment on any of his posts, lol
I was just saying the same thing to a friend last week. I've had friends who didn't care for Corelli or Bjorling or Gigli or whomever, but I've never met a single person who did not like Wunderlich.
listen beginning at 2:01 the third set of 16th notes... then again at 2:45...I looked up fritz becasue honetley I dont really want to listen to everyone else...Fritz is trhe standard but I think he makes a mistake
It's true, the timing at 2:01 isn't perfect. However, I beg to consider, we are talking of a 1959 live recording broadcasted on national television - sung by a young (not yet 30) artist doing his his first attempt with Rossini. Given those circumstances the coloratura is no less than ravishing.
For perfect accuracy of coloratura, go for his 1966 recording. Or his 1965 Xerxes. Or any Händel piece he sung beginning from 1963. His "colpi di petto" are unmatched.
hey, i was just pointing out a fact i also sing rossini and i am only 29...so I know how hard it is to sing it. i just found it crazy that he missed notes...but one other thing. i also sing handel and handel is a cakewalk compared to rossini...
@js59695 I sat on stage w/Rubenstein & he dropped some clunkers. Think anyone cared? Listen to old MET broadcasts & hear Corelli blow lots of things. When the great ones sing difficult music live, listen for more than 100% accuracy. Not one of these people ever batted 1000.
@Lovelytenor1 uhm please tell me u are not trying to start a utube argument... I freakin know people make mistkes... one of my teachers performed with PAV a lot and she said he cracked on high c's a couple of times...happens to everyone...again as stated BELOW... Fritz is usually perfect I love Fritz my fav tenor so I was more than suprised when I heard a mistake thats all i was sayin not that he now sucks and should have been perfect. Im a musician I know...its never perfect
@js59695 No argument intended. I wish you luck w/your singing. I was drafted out of grad school & did not get my chance. Have started back singing in my senior years & its not a bad pipe. Yes, there are are plenty of LP mishaps on YT. His was not a perfect instrument & he perhaps performed too much. Have known some folks who sang w/him as well.
@Lovelytenor1 well thats great. wish i could have heard some of these singers live. Too bad americans are about the huge voices. I mean i dont have a huge voice. WOuld u like to hear a recent recording...it isnt great and it was and is very raw first take of de miei...mistakes all over the place but a descent recording email me at jonathon75 at hotmail com
beautiful singing, no question about it, however, if you would sing like that to Rosina under her window, you would wake up the entire neighbourhood. And that is exactly what they do not want, according to libretto. This is not remark to singing but more to staging or artistic directing.
This is an excellent comment and I believe it is misunderstood and certainly does not rate a -5. Translated, it goes: "How fabulous, how he (Wunderlich) doesn't just play the role of the Spanish count, but rather the role of the vain tenor in the role of the Spanish count. A better comedian I have never seen."
I don't believe anyone will replace Fritz Wunderlich. The tragedy of his death is just as striking almost half a century later as it was then. I remember asking others just what tenor would opera houses now try to sign and they kept coming up with vague statements that soon sounded like silence itself. Fritz Wunderlich had a wonderful effect on many people that made it seem to them as if he'd suddenly appear at their front door singing "Ecco ridente."
Ah! Wunderlich, Wunderlich... You makes me sigh! What a wonderful voice!

I've never known anyone who disliked his singing. He's the only singer I can say that for, period.

Same here.
Do you know if he ever made a studio recording of this aria? I was hoping he had but couldn't find one.

The gold standard for tenors is still Fritz and all our tenors of today refer to him as an "IDEAL".

Cara Desdemona vuoi bocciare lo stile rossiniano, un cantante duna voce cosi
incantevole rende bella ogni aria.
Tanti cantanti abbisognano di musiche eccezionali per essere passabili.

Desdemona sei giustissima! Ma...
Fritz is an exemption even in the field of belissimo Rossini...
The reason is, maybe, Fritz's unlimited talent!
Thank you!
