The point is power abuse. Making fun of people viewed to be lesser human beings because of who they are as part of a minority is not humour it is abuse. What's being called upon is maturing of a nation. A nation's humour is a yardstick of their maturity. The Netherlands uses the guideline of "A measure of a country's civility is its treatment of minorities"

I actually think that everyone here had a legitimate point. Wayne was definately right in calling out people for finding mere same sex attraction on it's own to be something hilarious. He really nailed why we feel offended by this because people aren't even giving legitimate reasons for the ridicule. It's like saying "haha, your black" to someone: it's playground bullying. Jay's apology was really sincere and I do honestly think he made a legitimate mistake; it goes under our noses most times.

I did not watch the show, but I saw this clip here. I'm glbt and im not offended by it. I think that sure there is a line, but the line is not black and white. For instance, most of my friends are straight, we (including I) make 'gay' jokes, base on stereotypes alone, not as individual people. I know gay actors who pole fun at gay stereotypes... we have to be able to laugh at ourselves sometimes lol like "oh thats so true!" ya know? Leno is a comedian! Liberal Hollywood is supposed to be friendly and supportive of gay people but in actuality they have been the leading proponents of reinforcing gay stereotypes in society by using gay people as the targets of cheap seventh grade humor on TV and in film. I don't agree that Christian white males are often the butt of jokes. What people laugh at them for are the idiotic things they often do. for example, they follow leaders like the late jerry Falwell and James Dobson who respectively thought Tinky Winky and Sponge Bob were gay. Pat Robertson thinks that gay pride flags will cause meteors to hit Orlando. The fundamentalists actually believe that earth is only a few thousand years old. This is funny and why we laugh. It is not at their religion.

How often Chr. white males are the butt of jokes is not the point. They can be and are, even if it is laughing at their religion, which it really is in your example of Pat!

The difference is that minorities are abused and deprived of rights, liberties and justice through history. That's why mean jokes on them have a chilling xtra effect. But in essence, jokes about maj/minorities are to be held to the same standards. Intention or effect doesn't matter. Freedom of speech is just what it is.

And sure, you can critize someone for mean or bad jokes and speak about it and the effects of this kind of jokes (you can even make bad jokes or better jokes in return), but I think you went overboard on this issue with Leno. To talk about crossing the line is implying that he shouldn't have made the jokes and certainly should not make more like them and that makes it automatically an issue of free speech.

It wasn't a good joke and it shows that Leno who might consider himself a supporter of gay rights (I don't know if he does or is) doesn't get what it means being put down as gay. You will see this more often, especially with liberal ppl. They just don't get it.

But I have to agree with O'Reilly on this. Even mean jokes are freedom of speech. His example of Christian white males actually is to the point even if such a joke wouldn't have the awful shivering effect as with disliked minorities

Sorry, Wayne, there is no such thing as crossing the line, when it comes to freedom of speech.

The Gay Rights movement has devolved into campaigning for censorship, and now scrutinizing even famed comedians when they are doing exactly what they are doing.

What you are doing is essentially gay affirmative action. Are we gays a special case, a handicap group that needs special help? I think not. Best thing to do is to rise above it all and take it as what it is, a joke.
