  • *start acting

  • If racehorses had no desire to run, they'd all suck. Plain and simple. any owner, jockey, trainer, can see if a horse doesnt have their heart completely dedicated to it. Horses were made to run, so before you keep acting like all horses are the same, and noone likes it, then shut up.

  • I cry every time I watch this. Ruffian was the King and Secretariat was the King! Rip both of you.

  • Sometimes you just have to realize what horses give us!When someone needs hope watch Secritaiant, the movie!R.I.P Secritaiant and Ruffian, you guys were the King and Queen! But,I LOVE ALL HORSES!P.S MANLY MINE!

  • Sometimes you just have to realize what horses give us!When someone needs hope watch Secritaiant, the movie!R.I.P Secritaiant and Ruffian, you guys were the King and Queen!

  • WHO CARES WHICH HORSE IS BETTER, WE ALL HAVE ARE SPECIAL ONES, WHAT GREAT ATHLETES, JUST REMEBER THE MEMORIES THEY ALL GAVE US BEFORE THE TRAGEDIES, THATS WHAT I WANT TO REMEBER. RIP ALL THE RACE HORSES, WIN LOSE OR DRAW WE LOVE YOU ALL...............JHS64

  • SPORTS ILLUSTRAED INCLUDED RUFFIAN AS THE ONLY NON HUMAN ON THE LIST OF TOP FEMALE ATHELETES OF THE CENTURY #53, THAT IS THE GREATEST TRIBUTE TO THE BEST FILLY GOD PUT ON THE TRACK, SHED A TEAR EVERTIME I WATCH ANY VIDEO OF THE BEST FILLY EVER, I KNOW SHES RUNNING WITH ALL THE RACE HORSES IN HEAVEN, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN.......................................................JHS64

  • THERE ARE GOOD HORSES, THAN THERE ARE GREAT HORSES, THAN THERE ARE SPECIAL HORSES TOUCH BY GOD, RUFFIAN WAS THE ONE TOUCHED BY GOD, 10 -0 , TRACK RECORDS, EQUALED RECORDS, NEVER HEADED, NEVER WHIPPED BY HER JOCKEYS. PAIDED OUT MORE MONEY THEN THE TRACK TOOK IN, NO OTHER RACE HORSE EVER DID THAT. SHE IS RUNNING IN HEAVEN WITH ALL THE CHAMPIONS RIP BEAUTIFUL ONE YOU MY BEST EVER.............................

  • poor Raffian :'( I know she died at 3 years but how again? i think it was her legs... what was it again?

  • Kocham tego konia :)

  • In my eyes Landaluce was the best filly ever. Had the greatest 2 year-old campain of all-time. ven better than any colt, her death was just as tragic or even more than Ruffian's. But I geuss no one will remember since she doesn't have a movie made of her >.>

  • @queenluciaa I think that Ruffian is remembered because of the fact that in her 10:10-0-0 record she was never challenged... for that matter she never let any horse in front of her. I also think that Landaluce was a real phenom, I think I read somewhere that her combined margin of victory was 41 1/2 lengths, which is ridiculous for a 5 start juvee. Its probly hard to say she is the best filly ever though, the horse Kincsem was 54: 54-0-0 in her lifetime. cont.

  • @queenluciaa The fact that she (Kincsem) ran in the late 1800's also makes her a hard pick, but 54-0 is pretty tough to equal. Then we come to the present day, with my personal favorite Zenyatta. VERY big horse, that was never really tested except for Blame beating her by a nose in the Classic. Its difficult to pick because they all raced in different era's. Do I think that Zenyatta could have beaten Ruffian or Landaluce... She probly couldnt have, but I'd love to watch that race.

  • @brady2010irish

A Personal Ensign, Rachel Alexandra, Ruffian, Zenyatta, and Landaluce race would have been outstanding. Rachel Alexandra is my favorite mare next to Landaluce, but I don't think any horse could've beaten Landaluce.

  • QUE GRANDE FUISTE RUFFIAN. AUNQUE NO TE VI EN VIVO DIGO QUE DE VER TUS VIDEOS ME HACEN LLORAR. ERAS LA REINA SUPREMA DE ESTADOS UNIDOS.

  • im happy that they keep giving her fresh new roses for her grave :) i would just buy her the breyer horse and place it on her grave :).

  • total schön iloveyou

  • great tribute! she was amazing not only because she was fast but because she kept on running...she was running towards her death in a way... besides being truly great at what she did, I think her death also made her an icon and an immortal thats always gonna be remembered...kudos to you and kudos to ruffian

  • My father and I, rest his soul, watched this race live on CBC when I was a young teenager. My father was an avid racing fan, which rubbed off on me after watching Secretariat win the Triple Crown in 1973. I've been a lifelong racing fan every since!! But this race was really tragic. Foolish Pleasure was a very good colt. But had she not broken down, I really believe that Ruffian would have defeated him on that day. I think she was just faster than Foolish Pleasure. JMO.

  • I miss her, why all these beautiful horses have to break down

  • rip seabiscuit,ruffian,and barbaro,eight bells

  • This tradgey is why match races are no more.

  • pegasus

  • What is the name of the song?

  • the greatest filly, no wait the greatest female horse ever. she won the filly triple crown and undefeated in her first ten races. the best of the best in my opinion. rip ruffian...we all love you!!!

  • Weiss jemand, wo ich den Songtext finden kann?

  • ask in english idiot

  • Does anybody knows where I can wach the Ruffian movie online? I just couldn't find anything. :(

  • yes you can watch the ruffian movie on 'cresentmoonranch's cahnnel.

  • Great video!!! I was wondering what the first quote says though. I can't read the whole thing.

  • i love horse period! one of gods most beautiful animals

thank you for sharing your great videos

did not know a movie was made of this wonderful horse im going to get it immediately

  • shes made racing for me

its so surreal to see footage of her.. its peace in motion

  • wow, i got the chills in many places in this one. And got very teary eyed as well (at the pics of her grave)

  • This tugs at my heartstrings every time I see the video, and listen to the song.

Taken so young, and so soon...I believe if she had lived and raced more she would have proved herself the best of all time. Of EITHER sex.

  • im gunna make carlykaiser queen of racehorse movies really good job

isnt the guy who sings this song the same as the one who did lost in the fog

  • Yup.

    Gerry Lukacik.

  • Da, when she came out of surgery, she did indeed try to "run" while lying on her side in convalescence. This is also shown in the movie. Just heartbreaking what she and her team went thru!

  • So, you believe racehorses have no desire to run?

  • Of course not; I implied no such thing. They love to run. But Ruffian was not "special" for "wanting to run" when she woke up. It's a prey reflex to run from something fearful as awaking from a drug knock-out would do.

  • i read in the book that wen she was under all those drugs she still tried to run when she was laying down

  • GenRisk, I know just what you mean.......I was a young child at the time, but this one truly cuts deep, doesn't it? Just somethin' about this gorgeous and heart-full filly...........RIP dear Sofie. May Heaven find you grazing, racing, and as joyful as you do so dearly deserve to be...........

  • Nice video. I see much time and work went into this song. I remember watching the race. He was a decent colt, nothing great. Nothing for her to die over. I left racing for several years after that. Still harder for me to re-live than any other horse's breakdown since.

  • i just watched the movie it was soo darn sad never let a animal lover watch the movie and the bad thing is id actually thought shed race again :( i never heard of her but she was a great horse

  • Carly, true so, Ruffian was not truly black, just about the darkest bay that one could imagine........no matter, she was unreal and gorgeous, and I love her still as I loved her when I was a wee lil girl in 1975.

  • We know. She was a very dark bay. Except, Gerry Lukacik wrote this song with BLACK instead of bay- probably because she looked black.

  • Actually, I used "black" because it rhymed with 'track.' :-) Because she was so close to a true black, without actually being a black, most will overlook the technicality.

  • Ah.

    x3

    That's true.

You can barely tell unless you look at her brown markings.

  • i love ruffian so much she was the bessr girl in the world and i still miss her she will alwasy e in my heart forever!

    r.i.p ruffian!

  • thats ok thanks for trying!!!!:)

  • Carly, this is beautiful.......so touching and true. What a wonderful tribute to this one in a million filly.

  • I'll never forget that awful day watching it, I unashamedly cried like a baby when she broke down, as I did when Barbaro broke down a couple of years ago. You can clearly see she was spooked by the birds flying up in front of her! RIP sweet Ruffian.

  • She wasnt spooked by the birds. The one bird flew after she broke down. Frank Whitely thinks she most likely did it when she came out of the gate, that she had injured her left leg and therefore was putting more weight on her right front leg and at that speed it gave way. I dont think she was spooked by the birds...in her other races she had even more birds fly up at her and they never bothered her.

  • GO RUFFIAN!!

    RIP

  • Juste une magnifique vidéos !!

    C'est tellement triste bisoux .

  • Ruffian was a great Filly, she did break one of Man O' Wars records.

  • i love ruffian. i wish she had never died. i new she would have died eventully but, WHY!

  • Some of us were not born when she ran but her story is still capturing- Somethings are just now ours we only borrow them

  • greatest filly to ever run........i just wish she wouldnt have broken down because she would have shown the world that girls can be just as good as boys.....and sometimes better (like Rags to Riches! i loved seeing her beat Curlin!)

  • I saw the movie and it was as sad as anything

  • I had never heard of Ruffian before but like racing so great video!

  • omg! you've NEVER heard of Ruffian!? She's been my favorite since I was 5, she was the BEST ever!

  • Greatest filley. Fastest horse by far.

  • i can't read any of the words but great vid

  • I liked it~!

  • This song makes me cry....whats this songs name? RIP Ruffian and Barbaro!

  • The Great Match

  • this song is sad. i cried. love you Ruffian ..run girl, at Rainbow's Bridge with your friend Barbaro!!

  • ruffian was a great horse and didnt deserve to die.

she really did the heart to finish 1st every time!!!

  • The song is so sad

  • who can ever forget a great horse like Ruffian

    R.I.P you fantastic girl

  • ruffian was great and she proves the statment " Girl Power" and she could of won and i think she was great and hopefully something like that won't happen to rags to riches or any horse. Great vid can't wait for another

  • The movie was great, I can't help it, I've seen it like 5 times now, it just shows how fragile athletes are, and yes, Ruffian was every bit an athlete, her trainer knew she needed rest after her filly triple crown win, he did not want that match race, it was all about greed and the almighty buck, put people in the stands at the risk of the horses, what a shame, she just loved to run, even with a broken leg, she never gave up, great movie, great horse.

  • that was a great video, it made me cry :(

  • The scene in the recent movie Ruffian where Sam Shepherd did a wonderful job playing Ruffians Trainer who had to watch this beloved legend meet her fate.... I vividly remember when it happened, I was just 13 that early summer.... I felt so sorry for this poor Horse, her poor Trainer..... I feel sorry for him too.

  • That movie was great. I watched it on HBO. The scene where they showed Ruffian's pastern snap made me sick. When I watched the Ruffian movie, it reminded me a lot of when I saw Barbaro break down on the track of the Preakness stakes. That's funny that you were 13 when Ruffian broke down; I was 13 when Barbaro broke down!

  • They used actual video of Ruffian in the end credits of the movie on Saturday night. I thought it would have been nice if they used this song and video as well.

  • im watchin the Ruffian Movie right know

  • she has probably been the best racing filly of all. i believe it bcuz the only race she's ever lost was her last. it's amazing how some horses are!

  • I'm new to YouTube, and this question may have comee up already, but here goes: Who sings the lyrics for this movie? Thanks!

  • Ruffian, for sure - one of the ALL-time greats... can't wait for the new movie!

  • I remember that day well, heart broken. Thanks so much for this......

  • Thank you for the great tribute to Ruffian. My uncle, Jacinto Vasquez was her regular rider and my family really appreciates the great job that you have done with the tribute. We have a few of the pictures that you used in the montage and the song was appropiate. My words can't express my true feelings and the best way to sum it up is to say THANK YOU!!! From the Vasquez Family.

    Regards.

    Victorino Vasquez

  • OK kiddies..can anyone out there besides me,name the only NON-HUMAN to make the list of the top 100 Female Athletes of the 20th Century?Hint:She's ranked 53rd.

  • Great movie, I liked this one way better than your other one because this one does not actually show Ruffian's break down. I think that Ruffian and Frank Whitely would both have liked it this way.

    She was a great mare.

  • I didn't show the breakdown in my other one

  • Did I get the wrong name? I thought one of your videos showed the breakdown, and one didn't. I liked the one that didn't best, I thought it was very tastefully donel and a real tribute to an amazing athlete

  • the one you're thinking of is oktahahorses's. =-)

  • Thanx for making this I actually almost had tears in my eyes!

  • Excellent video. I read the book on her a few years ago and it has stuck with me since. I love, love love, this filly. Such a tragic story, especially when you hear the trainer of foolish pleasure said "the bitch broke down" when Ruffian broke down on the track. Not very professional in my opinion. Great video!

  • A beautiful tribute to the greatest filly ever!!

  • A touching tribute that gave me chills! Well done!

  • even the great Secretariat had a bad day and got beat once. Ruffian never had a bad day until the day that tragically ended her life. Everyone who has ever had a love for the magnificent Thoroughbred athlete should know about Ruffian and what she did in her short but dazzlingly brilliant life.

  • Cont'd .... I know that day will never come. There will never be another like her. Mark these words. Even Lucien Lauren, the trainer of the Great Secretariat, spoke of the fact that he thought she might be even better than Secretariat himself. Don't think I'm trashing Secretariat-I'm not. I'm a huge fan of Secretariat as well.

  • . Cont'd...You won't believe what you see. I own video of every 1 of her races. She destroyed every field she faced. She broke the will of at least one who faced her and tried to stay with her, gamely, but was never the same again once Ruffian got done toying with her. In fact she would toy with the field, almost every race....

  • WOW- absolutely beautiful tribute to the Greatest filly ever to step on a race track, possibly the greatest horse ever to step on the track, period. Brought tears to my eyes. I've been obsessed with the life and legend of Ruffian since I watched her break down in The Match. I was 11 yrs old. If anyone knows Tbred racing and doesn't know much about Ruffian- she was unbelievable. An absolute "freak" the like of which we will never see again. Find some of her races on video on eBay

  • They're making a movie on her, I read, in Blood Horse interview on net w/Bill Nack, Sec's biographer. Sam Shepherd is playing trainer.

  • One thing to keep in mind is, that as special as she was, what happened to Riffian is very common in racehorses. The vast majority of racehorses are slaughtered when they come off the track. There are lots of rescue organizations out there dedicated to rehabilitating retired racers, and many can be adopted for under five hundred dollars.

  • I actually petted her once....she was truly great. She had charisma, and she was built...

  • How!? That is so cool...

  • I live in Kentucky, and as a teenager I used to exercise racehorses. I've met a lot of the great ones, but she was really special--along Secretariat. She wasn't really black, though, she was a very dark brown, sleek as a seal, with huge hindquarters for a filly and she was very muscular. She wasn't very "snorty" though, and she had very kind eyes. Secretariat was also a sweetie, although he knew he was something special. \

  • You are correct, she wasn't a true black. However, when writing the song, and having to take rhyme into consideration, black was a better rhyme with track, LOL. I try to be as historically accurate as possible when writing a song about a subject, but it is not necessary. Much like Hollywood will embellish a story in a movie, it's perfectly OK to do that in song as well. Most folks, unfamiliar with horses, wouldn't have caught that. :)

  • Ruffian knew she was special too, no knock on the great Secretariat, but Ruffian had a presence and a charisma. When she walked onto the track she knew everyone was looking at her, she knew she owned the track :)

  • Wonderful !

  • i want 1 of those ruffian shirts lol

  • I just can't watch it. Brace yourself for this... after her Spinaway victory.. Lucien Laurin, Secretariat's trainer, shook his head and said, "As God is my witness, she might be better than Secretariat" !!! God Love Her. RIP sweetheart

  • Ruffians story reminds me very much of Dubai Millenium, both were masters of there trip, though Dubai had been beaten in one start he won everything else by 3 lengths plus, both died young, both still had alot to give.

  • although ruffians story is sad..theres something about it though that makes me happy. she had a certain presence. ruffian will never be forgotten

  • i remember ruffian..i remember that day...when i saw that..i instantly just shut my TV off...i couldnt bear to watch it. ruffian was the greatest filly of all time..and shes one of the greatest horses ever. its true though..if you ask the ones who know shes still the fastest one. actually i almost thought it was unfair for foolish pleasure to have a match race with ruffian..if ruffian hadnt broken down..she would have had an 8 length victory (going away)

  • ^ that was actually my dad on my youtube thing cuz he didnt know i was logged in & hes stupid and thought he could just comment...lol im not old enough to have seen ruffian but i know about her..my dad was a huge fan of hers..sad story

  • Who sings this song and what is the title? This movie is absolutely beautiful, I cry everytime I watch it.

  • I'm so glad Carly found this song. I wrote it close to two years ago, and this is a home recording I made shortly after I wrote it. It's called 'The Great Match' The song isn't commercially available yet. However, you can find a more refined version of it by going to www oklahomasongerwiters com, and clicking on the 'our members' link. I should be the 3rd one down on that first page. Look for the song title, and click on the headphones to the right of it. Enjoy. Gerry Lukacik

  • Oops, I inverted two letters in the link I mentioned above. It should be:

    www oklahomasongwriters com Thanks. Gerry

  • I will. You wrote this? It's beautiful. The words are so touching. You need to make it commercial! ^_^

  • Thanks for the comliment. That's on the drawing board. Starting to work on some back-up tracks for the two songs I have posted on OK songwriters. I actually have ten songs written based on horses from history, and want to group them together on one CD. However, there's no set date to have this completed. Gerry

  • I need to thank Carly for lighting a fire under my butt, LOL. I've since joined ASCAP, and this was one of the first titles I submitted for registration. It has been accepted, and should show up on their ACE Title Search in about 2 weeks. It's called 'The Great Match'

  • What a beautiful video! What a great horse she was, so magnificent and beautiful!I can't stop crying.Well done.

  • Thanks for this wonderfullly moving tribute to a great filly who has become a legend in horse history .

  • Fantastic tribute to a fantastic filly!

    Thank you!

  • she truly was an amazing little girl. the whole world loved her. and not only that, we respected her. she was such a great horse.

  • Ruffian was and is a very special girl. This was a great video, you should be very proud of your work.

  • I remember Ruffian's last race like it was yesterday. She truly WAS special.

  • Beautiful - I don't consider this a "little" memorial to Ruffian (in your words). I think it is a tremendous and wonderful memorial you have done for her! You are only 14... now that's amazing. Thank you!!

  • ESPN Plans a Movie for June of 07'

    http://www.ntra.com/content.aspx?type=news&id=16206

    She was amazing

  • What a great horse! I was in tears all the time. She was really awesome and also will be in my heart.

  • wonderful video great job

  • wow! awesome job...what a great video for the best female racer of all time! :)

  • Great Job! I have read the book. But watching it and hearing that song, great job.

  • This is very special. Ruffian has been my equine heroine almost from the day she was born. She was my ideal horse. Thanks for doing your part to bring back her memory, as it was put aside for many years.

  • You should be very proud about what you have done. You have shown everyone what a great Racehorse Ruffian was and taught everyone to love and appreciate her. Thank You

  • Good Job!! One question, back in the 70's there was another song written about Ruffian. I can't find any reference to it anywhere. And don't remember the title. It was very good. Do you know anything about that song?

  • Since I'm the one that wrote this one, and put a lot of research into, and actually continue to do research on a subject after writing a song, I've been keeping my eyes open since you mentioned this. I think I found what you are looking for, though it's expensive. Check out www-steelwireband-com. I've also just posted my own version of my song using mostly video clips. Hope this helps.

  • great tribute. THANK YOU. I have been obsessed with Ruffians life and legend since watching the match race when I was 11. I'm in the horse biz and can't believe how many horse folks have never heard of the great filly

  • Stewball( maybe) by Joan Baez. The song was written before the accident but Joan did a version after Ruffian died which she changed some verses. She wrote the changes in memory of Ruffian.
