Man, I sure dig Hound Dog; He could rock the blues with the best of'em! I oughta know I saw him a lot in Chicago at Florences, The ExpressWay, & Big Dukes, The Checkerboard too.!
did taylor play with the slide on his sixth finger or his pinky? someone said he did on his sixth but ive seen pictures of it and its jsut a little runt of a finger
@gageman70 There are photos that show clearly that Hound Dog played with the slide on his fifth finger--not the vestigial sixth. You can see it clearly on the photos on "Beware of the Dog"--at least on the LP version.
@bobobekker Yes sir I have the record from Alligator but was just wondering if anyone had put it up on youtube!! Maybe it's time I learned how to start doing this!! Thanks!!
I rode with Hound Dog & His Sister Lucy to this Ann Arbor Gig.....He sure was
soundin' good that day. If I remember right musician Doctor Ross was on the side of the stage dancing away. By the way before they got with Alligator Records Hound
Dog, Brewer & Ted used to call themselves Hound Dog Taylor & The Bluerockers
Man! The Dog just knocks my socks off. I used to see him all the time at Florences and the funny thing was I never thought that much of him back then. I see a lotta guys go around now saying they play BLUES, but they can't hold a candle to this man. I miss the Dog.
Thank you so much for this video. Way too little of his work was recorded. He was dead within two years of this video...what a huge loss. Footage poor? No way, man. It is one of the most beautiful things on Youtube.
Don't forget, the dog wears that slide on his sixth finger when he plays. The video quality doesn't show it well, but Hound Dog Taylor had six fingers on each hand...'
WELL I honestly don't consider myself a blues expert at all but I play guitar and I'm nuts about blues period ! And I have yet to hear anyone from the DOG'S era that got a sound close to what this man did with that ???? umm "GUITAR" ! I have listen to these songs over and over and never get tired of hearing the" Dog" . It almost sound like his guitar is begging for MERCY !. Incredible !
Hound Dog Taylor is nothing but a party. Wow! What a sound - like Elmore James on Sterno. This is dangerous music as it borders falling into utter chaos. He plays at blistering speed, sometimes out of sync with his drummer and base line but they manage to pull it off. And he does it playing cheap off the shelf Japanese guitars and Sears amps. There are more virtuoso blues players but no one matches his infectious spirit and enthusiasm.
I have been listening to Elmo and the Boys. This Guy is the most Low-Down of all. Turned on to the Blues in 1961. Heard Hound Dog after he died, inearly in 1980.This was a poor boy with a Pond Shop Guitar. Never cut any records till 70s. One to be remembered. Leo
Its such a shame that the Dog doesn't get the credit he deserves from the music industry. His influence is/was staggering. You can hear shades of the Dog's dirty blues slide in so many musicians that are/were more "commerically viable" like Page, Vaughn, Thorogood, Duane Allman, etc. Such a shame that legends like this are never appreciated until after they are gone.
Hound Dog and Brewer used to come to the University of Illinois Urbana campus fairly often during the late 60s. They could rock the house better than anyone else. I love to dance, and they could make Laura from Aurora and me cut a rug. Thanks for the memories!
I was at this concert. All those old blues players were laying down the soundtrack of my soul in the background, but at 18 I had no appreciation for the blues like I do today, and had no idea of the musical history I was experiencing. Thanks, Schmorre, now I know what I was "missing." Do you have any video from Goose Lake Aug, 1970?
any idea what guitar he's playing? I know he used teisco del rays but would this be virtually impossible to track down. really interested in the pickup switches.
HOUND DOG IS THE MAN! Clapton aint shit, and It may be out of tune but it is not off beat!!!! That funky mess is IN THE GROOVE. THIS IS THE BLUES, REPRESENT!!
Or lack of tone. Regardless: It's off tune, offbeat and still one of the best recorded blues artist ever. On tune, and on beat blues (aka. Clapton) is as boring as music can be.
damn right... but id say that guitar has more tone than a lot of new gibsons, fenders and what have ya.. its just pure down home to the bone leave me alone and let me moan tone!
I've heard so many versions of this song through the years but the way HDT plays it on the alligator album ..well I have no words for it.. still it's the best version I've ever heard. It belongs to him.
How is that racist at all? Blacks were persecuted a lot back then. They sang the blues because a lot of them had to live putting up with a lot of bullshit. Their music was full of soul hence the statement "true music". That's not racist to say at all.
this is killer the Dog has the greatest sound on his guitar Ive heard in a long time. just listen to those valves breaking up brilliant!!!!! so much better than the rectified crap people use now. thanx for posting

Theodore Roosevelt "Hound Dog" Taylor, Born: Apr.12/1917 Natchez MS, Died: Dec.17/1975 chiago IL.
