Our school did this as our musical this year, and I got to be Fagin. He's the BEST character ever, 'cause he's having so much fun playing around with the idea of being lawful, and how fun it would be, but at the same time, he's acknowledging i's a tad too late for him. He's really trying though, damn dodger in the end ruining his straightening.
@DIRECTORLORD Word. In "Oliver", there's no Social Security, no Medicare, no nothing! You think Fagin's gonna live on cat food & charity? Fuck that, man. :D
Just wonderful. The older I get, the more I notice every little bit of fun, emotion, character and genius in each wobbled note, each pause, each moment. A treasure.
oh...Oliver was the first play I was ever in when I was younger. The guy playing Fagin was pretty dang good at it...us little kids had to try not to giggle at him.
With Fagin singing this song "Reviewing The Situation", did that mean he wanted to quit being a thief and take his treasure and run away from the thief kids and maybe get a job and get married? Unfortunately at the end, he decided to stay being a thief and he felt he better stay inside the hideout with the kids since nobody in life knew him or could help him as he mentioned from 2:00-2:13. (Maybe he could have asked Nancy before she died to help him find a job since Nancy was the nicest).
@afriendofbean To me, the main purpose of this song is to actually highlight all the options Fagin did not have. You can't go from one day being a grimy thief hiding out in the underbelly of London to suddenly having a respectable demeanour and employable skills. Nor can you just go off and climb the social scale if it strikes your fancy. They're all nice ideas in theory, but not overly plausible due to the social structure. Nancy couldn't have helped, she was basically in the same situation.
@allpossibleworlds That's true. Fagin probably wanted to have a job and he was thinking who he could use as a reference where he sang that he knows nobody except the kids who are his henchmen. He sounded like he was going to try to get employable skills which is why he sang from 2:15-2:19 that he will turn over new leaves.
@allpossibleworlds One other thing since I didn't have enough characters in my last message.
I agree that Nancy was in the same situation as Fagin since she was angry a scene before this scene and she was the girlfriend of Bill Sykes who was the henchman of Fagin which Bill would confront her for helping Fagin. Since Nancy has a job as a tavern singer, maybe she could have helped Fagin get a job in the tavern as a bartender or waiter.
@afriendofbean The implication in this film is that Nancy is a prostitute... I must admit I have not read the novel but I did just look it up online, and according to spark notes, Nancy is a prostitute in the book. In the film, when Bill says to Nancy, "do you know who you are? and what you are?" that's what he's referring to. It would have been common for women in her social standing to have to resort to prostitution in order to make any money.
The thing about this version of Fagin (and most of the old versions of Fagin) they really play on the fact that he is Jewish (which is very apperant in the music as well as his accent and looks) but these days they don't do that.
@TemelVeBen Yes, it's interesting, isn't it? Personally I find Fagin to be a bit of a complex character in the musical and not just some simplified villain, so I'm not really sure if representing him as Jewish is necessarily such a bad thing... Admittedly, he does fit the stereotype of hoarding money, but to me, Fagin's vices are related to his circumstances and social standing, not race... he's terrified of being left alone to die in the streets, so yeah he hoards money, who can blame him?
Oh god..the memories this brings back X3 I was in the 1998 westend prodction of Oliver...and this was definately one of my favorite songs. Still is! Thanks for the upload!!
The self-serving SCUM based at Westminster Parliament picked more than a pocket or two, they picked my pocket, your pocket and the rest of the British tax-payers pockets and make Fagan look like a Saint. At least he only stole from the rich to give to the poor, unlike the Right Dishonourable MPs who stole from the poor to give to the Etonian upperclass rejects. I would give them the lovely expenses of £4.00 a day sanctions for 6 months, which they gave to myself and other hard-working
@insanityrulestheday tax-payers and see if they remain in good health after living off of this disgraceful amount of living expenses. May they rot in HELL ????????
@insanityrulestheday ok so a few were corupt but where would we be without these men we would be in as much trouble as Lybia so yeah Fagin is awsome but so is our democratic process.
@Samki9198 A FEW, don't make me laugh. There was about 5 out of 650 right dishonourable self-serving SCUM who didn't STEAL from the tax-payer. I can only assume you've never had the pleasure and privilege of the corrupt British state SANCTIONS of £4.00 a day to live off of, which I and other hard-working people of Britain have received from this bunch of thieves who claim to be democratic???? As to Libyia, we supported the evil dictatorship of Gadaffi over his people until he was expendable????
@insanityrulestheday yeah but what party did that the one in whcih is in suport of the working class, and what your saying is that every MP in the house of commans who YOU elected stole from you even though the ones responsible have been put on trial, the media are responsible for the uprising SCUM like you so one word of advise dont belive everything you read in the papers!
@Samki9198 You should get your FACTS right before you give ADVISE. I did not ELECT any of the parties which have taken us into these wars, and neither did the MEDIA. I can only presume SCUM like you instead must have voted these thieves into the house of Commons?
@insanityrulestheday I ment your class as a generalision so yeah and I voted for the conserative party look I belive that people like you are what is wrong with the worldz as you will just critisize our own country but it is better than half the places out there thank God you don t live in Russia as with the coruptioin in there you could go on for years so fuck you we are lucky!!!!
@MrElectrician59 look I do apologise if I have caused offence to anyone but I got a little angry at the top coment on the video and I agree with you its a musical not a base for political debate.

Ron Moody deserved the Best Actor Oscar for his performance...the Academy really did him a disservice by giving it to Cliff Robertson.

I love this song. In fact, me and my friends made up a mini parody to it. It's Called Something's Burning! Here's the chorus:
Somethings burning, in my kitchen!
It could be chicken,
Or a pie!
(Sing to the chorus of Reviewing the Situation)
