@zunaout Yes! Its almost 5 am where I am at right now, but I didn't want to go to sleep before I found the source of the sweet noise that was plaguing my head for most of the day.
Medicine is a LEGEND if you ask me. Sadly,Beth Thompson left them, but you can still hear her with her new band,The Shyway. Search 'Painful Cyst' or find her in "my favorite channels". i and Spacirelei are both on her friend list, why is this a secret...!?
Great Scott; what a band! I love the intro into a nice melody. Leave it to the Brits to make it cool; to the Yanks to get it right. Lovely guitar noise fills my ear with pain and pleasure. I just bought their catalog. Whew!
In my universe Medicine were bigger than all the rest. The best band of the 90s. Leave it the americans to do it right after the brits make it cool. The best into of any song of it's type.
this is the song that turned me on to Medicine, the first time i heard it was when I was a DJ at a college station the album had just came out and was on the regular rotation since I already loved noise music when I cued the cd for a track to play this one was the one I would play and i would turn it up very loud. By the time Medicine was in the Crow soundtrack and film I knew who they were I even got to see them live on their tour years ago.
Was introduced to this song at the Swamp Club in Bath, England, fall of 1992. I had requested My Bloody Valentine, and the DJ smartly dropped the Weatherall mix of "Soon" on us. Then, with the air thoroughly filled with chemical smoke, he blended it into Medicine's "Aruca." I ran up to the DJ booth both times enthralled and asking, "What is this?!?!" Within a few weeks I had added both songs to the pile of audio treasures I brought back to the U.S. with me. Sweet nostalgia.
@PoetsOfElan I like. To run with your idea, "Aruca" is like "Soon's" punkier precocious niece jumping up and down on the bed and singing into a hair-brush. :-D I love both of these songs.
No it wasn't, but I think for the most part the Americans jumped on board after the release of Isn't Anything. By 1992, it was already starting to die off. We just picked up the torch in 1994.
Well, *everyone* jumped on board after Isn't Anything. I guess if all you're interested in is the flavor of the month, then, yeah, it died out in 1992. If you actually like the MUSIC, then it's still just as valid as it was then. Your call.
i think if u all heard more of their stuff, there'd b more of it on youtube. did i say "think"? i KNOW there would! i lost their albums, SHOT FORTH SELF LIVING,HER HIGHNESS,& BURIED LIFE. STRIPPED & REFORMED is good too.n e way,I WANNA HEAR EM!
just listened 2 my bloody valentine's soon, and NO,this song is not a rip off. u r hearing the layered guitar of both songs, but u should try listening 2 the notes.
annette z. was the original bassist in the bangles (see the first e.p.). she was also the original lead singer in medicine and co-wrote aruca and miss drugstore. there's your connection.
Actually, the first time I saw Medicine perform live, (opening for Chapterhouse at the Whisky, L.A., before Shot Forth Self Living was released), *both* Annette and Beth were on stage.
yes.. when i found this cd at the swapmeet in like 95 or so it was her name in the credits that made me by it.. it was the first i'd ever heard of them..
Saw these guys in early 90's at roxy or whiskey (can't remember). WAS SSOOOOO LOUD!!! Think I suffered slight permenate hearing loss... was worth it!!!
These are the only guys who tried to do the MBV thing and got it right. Like they really came up with their own cool version of how this stuff should sound. and they remembered that it's all about rocking. all those other shoegaze bands (except maybe Ride and obviously MBV themselves) really weren't any good.
did not there was a video for this song... this was one of my favorite and first Medicine songs I ever heard... I loved to turn up the Stereo as loud as it could go at the beginning of the song.
this song starts of in an almost glenn branca manner, but gravitates towards what which is almost certainly derived from MBV's soon. Still, It's quite good.
Is it just me who thinks this sounds basically nothing like MBV? Ok the video has similarities and it has a shoegaze feel, but to me it sounds more like some of the Manchester stuff that was eminating at the time, Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, that kind of thing but more hard edged. Anyway, it's a great song
I'm glad I got to see Medicine live in Providence RI back in the day - circa 1994.
I think Medicine is much noisier, wrote better songs than MBV, MBV is way too light for the most part. Medicine really embraced extreme noise, experimentation and psychedelia. And she's gorgeous too. Laner recently made a new "Medicine" album with himself and Bruce Lee's daughter singing. It's very experimental pop/electronics.
Who cares if it's a little MBV? Brad Laner is genius anyhow. Look folks, good music doesn't usually happen in a vacuum - so, so what if it sounds somewhat like something else? It's still great. We all win.

What are the chances a band will come and bring this scene back
from what it seems, shoegaze is dead.
The Radio Dept. pushes an idea here and there but I see no more innovation on
the level My Bloody Valentine set the standard at.
