Agreed about the "circle". The only explanation is that the SOBR fighters were not going to shoot, and this was an act to demoralise the gang leader. Possibly at first he was planned to be taken alive.

IN real life knife fights, whomever is cut first usually loses. They go into medical shock and pause, and panic. Most last three seconds. My uncle was in 20 knife fights in Vietnam, he lost five, never died. Every loss, a soldier buddy showed up with a gun (so he won!). He was a tunnel rat, didnt always use guns, couldnt. Didnt have room for a pistol. Drove him crazy after the war...sad story but it would make the best movie ever.
