Wait until you see Kathleen Kim who is Olympia now at the Met......I prefer her acting and positing and the production. Dessay is wonderful but I don';t care for how the director did this scene: it is too crude, which does add to the effect positively.
As good as Kathleen Kim was, at this stage in her career she is not yet Dessay, in terms of accuracy, musucianship, or the ability to create a vocal character for the role of Olympia. Her movements are also second to none. And she's FUNNY.
One problem I had with Bart Sher's direction of this scene is that is was barely DIRECTED. Nothing happens dramatically, unlike here. This is one of the best stagings out there; the Antonia act in this production of Robert Carsen's is just brilliant.

I would agree that Kim is still young and developing but I love her singing and acting and thought she was very funny and I have to give Director some credit for that. Kim is more charming; Dessary is "cooler"...but again it is a matter of personal preference.

Action doesn't always need to happen. Sometimes dramatically what must happen is simply a character performing. In that case it was a mechanical doll performing.
