for the kroot, put them in squads of ten and add in 5 hounds per squad. It comes in at exactly 100 points. P.S., the actual hound models are extremely expensive, so I got "Chaos Warhounds" from the Warhammer Fantasy line, you get ten in a box so that will get two squads down. Not only are hounds cheaper than kroot (so walls for cover saves will be less expensive), but they have initiative 5 (you'll attack first against marines).
Kroot can be very useful, they have no armour which spells out 'cannonfodder' , or, you can really mess the enemy up, take advantage of the feildcraft ability (3+ c saves in trees), i have 2 squds of 20, keep them in trees and ambush any aproaching enemy within 12" by firing 80 s4 shots at 3bs, after that the enemy will have lost some significant casualties, if he is foolish enough to assault you into difficult terrain i still get a maximum of 160 attacks and 3+saves :D
awesome paint job. i agree with your comments on the kroot. if you have a large squad, they can be bait for your vespids or other units to creep round the enemies flanks. lets face it, vespids are gonna need to flank the enemy to do real damage with thier neuron blasters.

tell your friend who plays space marines to build a "friendly list" he knows you are just starting out, he should be a nice guy and not tailor his forces to counter yours. If he doesn't have his whole army painted suggest that he plays with only painted models, and then finish yours. This will create a more enjoyable game for both of you. His forces will not be uber anti tau and you both will be playing with painted armies which is nice.

As for advice, I would say get more Crisis suits, and very good painting.
Kroot are good for keeping the enemy away from your warriors, and paranhas allow you to pick where the enemey goes. Even a saim hann all jet bike list will think twice about screwing with 15 parahnas, about 6-9 crisis suits and broadsides. (I have 2 squads of 6 firewarriors, and 1 squad of kroot, thats my core...)

If you play as Tau use seeker missiles a lot the work so well (but you need pathfinders to use them properly + Broadsides kill everything but are really hard to build and maintain.

$35 for a squad of prepainted minis is an excellent price. Most places that sell prepainted stuff will ask for 2 ro 3x that price. then again price is sometimes a sign of quality. If you are looking for high quality painting, the price is going to be higher. Look and make sure that you know the quality that you are going to be getting before spending money on prepainted minis.
nope, all models from GW come unpainted and unassembled. you have to read the fine print in each item. places like Miniwargaming, and Bluetable painting will sell them assembled ad painted for you, but you are looking at around 3x to 5x the initial cost of the item depending on the level of painting that you want.

18 quid will get you a fire warrior squad, or a kroot squad or an XV8 battlesuit will cost 11.75. 17.60 will get you a battlesuit commander, a broadside battlesuit, commander o'shovah or Shadowsun. £20 will get you Aun'Va. £15 for a piranha, £6 for a gun drone squad, £20 for a vespid squad, £8 for pathfinders, and £11.75 for an XV25 stealthuit squad. (this is all for a tau player!)
1 way to counter space marines is to use alot of battlesuits and hammerheads with radius shots. space marines are pretty crap if u do that. dont give up just cuz u lose to ur friend my friend used to beat me all the time with necrons but he bended the rules all the time so inow i know the rules he cant cheat which is quite funny seeing as i always kik his ass now.

Hey man, ive play a game withmy lil bro (9 yrs old) called heroscape, and i wanted to impress him with some really cool detailed warrioers... as i was googling i found a game called warhammer 40k so i googled that, and then i saw these sweet guys called "tau" which are sweeet looking. well anyways i wanted to know how much all your guys cost you(un painted) apporimately, and where i can buy these? walmart? and how wide are the bases(inches or cm) on the big robot guys on the farleft of ur table?
These are painted with great care, i am guessing and loads of detail you must have expericance. Really good work. Though you could make them look a bit more weathered by drybrushing them lightly with a soily brown colour.

In addition I would change the bc's to fusion blasters on the pirhanas and make them a dedicated tank hunter unit. I would also try to get a hammerhead, as those are great against any army. In using the kroot, I would inflitrate them and attempt to get a first turn charge, or possibly as a distraction to have your enemy shoot at while you get in position. Also an example of some great highlighting that I found that you might want to see is from petergollum title: Army Tau. Just run a search.
I like the army. I agree that the paint scheme is a little flat. What I would suggest would be maybe either a third color, an ink wash, highlighting, or drybrushing. Anyone of those techniques really helps to make it pop, like with my guard I decided to do drybrushing to give them that rustic and out in the field for a long time look. For tau you might want to try highlighting, since theyre supposed to be a clean looking army. Anyway for the army list I would suggest getting more crisis suits.

it gets kind of frustrating and he also likes to play missions that play to his advantages and make up his own rules for bunkers and stuff that also play to his favor. he only cares about winning but i just want to have fun!
The broadsides do the tank hunting, whereas all the plasma rifles and ion cannon chew through marines and terminators with ease. I do have a hard time with assault jump pack marines though.
best thing to do is focus them asap with most of your firepower while you try and take out their tanks / transports with broadsides. Make sure he isn't deepstriking when the scenario rules say he cant :P i've had a few marines try and pull that trick with me.
I've never used kroot either, they never seem to get in to close combat with me. My army is commander, 2 body guard, all with plasma rifles and missle pods / burst cannons. 3 elite battlesuits, with plasma rifles and burst cannons. 2 squads of 12 fire warriors, 3 broadside battlesuits and a hammerhead tank armed with ion cannon.
what ive seen people do with kroot is keep them in/behind cover and the wait for people to try and charge with their cc people and they get shot up and then kroot finish them off. did u say 1080 pts or 1800?

That set has 1k worth of models in there.
Counted out, its nearly 370 bucks worth of models if bought seperately.
Space Marines: 1 captain, 10 tactical, 1 Dreadnought and 5 terminators. 585 points.
Orks: 1 Warboss with 5 Nobz, 3 Deffkoptas, 20 Boyz. 450 points.
I picked up 2 box sets to suppliment my army, which is almost 11k at this point.

@pballer578, kroot are not bad if you use them right. 3 full squads of KROOT will destroy almost anything. the way you gotta do it is this. you infiltrait and disrupt. they gotta die for you to win. think of it like that, i mean they are AUXILLARIES.

cool army , was gonna get 2 crisis batle suit commanders , 4 stealth suits with gun drone and markerlight , 12 kroot , 12 fire wariors 12 fire warriors 2 piranhas and 1 devl fish 1 hammer head :) painted with scorched brown , then do armour plates vomit brown , mix of vomit brown and bleach bown highlight

Trust me when I say that this stuff is not painted very well. The crappy camera is VERY forgiving on my tau. Ive one a couple with my orks but never my tau and Ive been getting into the privateer press games recently

Privateer press makes hordes and warmachine. both great games that I recommend. Not sure about who ive won or lost too. Ive lost to guard and space marines a ton and I may have beat tyranids. With my orks ive beaten space marines, gaurd, tyranids,and eldar theyre more my play style

tau arent at thier best against marines
try battling orks or tyranids it may sound like a bad idea but if u cant beat tyranids with tau

=,( no xv8 *sob sob* srsly dude drop the paranas and proxi(use fake)xv8 units with loads of assult wepons like berst cannon at str 5 ap 5 wich will wound like crazy + an hq with a ciclic ion wich is assult 5 (str3 ap4)and any rolls to wound of 6 are AP 1!also try some sniper drone teams wich will also pop SM like crazy i at 6 str + ull get a marker light wich will make ur sutes hit on a 3+ insted of a 4+.this is a good army dont get me rong its just vs SM u need a lil diff set up remember PROXI

Hey man, ive play a game withmy lil bro (9 yrs old) called heroscape, and i wanted to impress him with some really cool detailed warrioers... as i was googling i found a game called warhammer 40k so i googled that, and then i saw these sweet guys called "tau" which are sweeet looking. well anyways i wanted to know how much all your guys cost you(un painted) apporimately, and where i can buy these? walmart? and how wide are the bases(inches or cm) on the big robot guys on the farleft of ur table?

These are painted with great care, i am guessing and loads of detail you must have expericance. Really good work. Though you could make them look a bit more weathered by drybrushing them lightly with a soily brown colour.

Main armor color - Knarloc Green (foundation paint)
secondary armor color - Bleached Bone
Cloth - Chaos Black
Some others colors are scab red and ultramarines blue

In addition I would change the bc's to fusion blasters on the pirhanas and make them a dedicated tank hunter unit. I would also try to get a hammerhead, as those are great against any army. In using the kroot, I would inflitrate them and attempt to get a first turn charge, or possibly as a distraction to have your enemy shoot at while you get in position. Also an example of some great highlighting that I found that you might want to see is from petergollum title: Army Tau. Just run a search.

I like the army. I agree that the paint scheme is a little flat. What I would suggest would be maybe either a third color, an ink wash, highlighting, or drybrushing. Anyone of those techniques really helps to make it pop, like with my guard I decided to do drybrushing to give them that rustic and out in the field for a long time look. For tau you might want to try highlighting, since theyre supposed to be a clean looking army. Anyway for the army list I would suggest getting more crisis suits.

The broadsides were fun but i painted like 95% of the fire warriors in one week so they begin to get extremely repetitive.

it gets kind of frustrating and he also likes to play missions that play to his advantages and make up his own rules for bunkers and stuff that also play to his favor. he only cares about winning but i just want to have fun!

The broadsides do the tank hunting, whereas all the plasma rifles and ion cannon chew through marines and terminators with ease. I do have a hard time with assault jump pack marines though.

best thing to do is focus them asap with most of your firepower while you try and take out their tanks / transports with broadsides. Make sure he isn't deepstriking when the scenario rules say he cant :P i've had a few marines try and pull that trick with me.

I've never used kroot either, they never seem to get in to close combat with me. My army is commander, 2 body guard, all with plasma rifles and missle pods / burst cannons. 3 elite battlesuits, with plasma rifles and burst cannons. 2 squads of 12 fire warriors, 3 broadside battlesuits and a hammerhead tank armed with ion cannon.

the piranha's are fun and i like the models too but the kroot do rarely get into cc but they do suck up a lot of shots which is helpful

what ive seen people do with kroot is keep them in/behind cover and the wait for people to try and charge with their cc people and they get shot up and then kroot finish them off. did u say 1080 pts or 1800?
