Longing and dreaming are fine, but this video is about sexual desire. And the opera is about a young girl, albeit she's got quite considerable powers, under the mandate of performing a duty for which she finds herselt unprepared because she has been unprepared for the real feelings of love and for the real consequences of betrayal. The video destroys, at least for me, any suggestion of the innocence, and the unpreparedness for adult emotions for which Dvorak conceived such elegaic music.

This is not for stage, this is a video - more than 100 years have passed since Dvorak wrote this opera - this is just some other kind of idea what we used to see, and i think it doesn't diminish his music ...and still gives a message of a woman who is longing and dreaming.

runupahill1, cut the crap and clear you ears, moron!
For all Netrebkos self-appointed critics - here you go "Netrebkos voice is evenly produced, effortless, sharp and clear and is matched with a technique that loves every note precisely and fully in its proper length and dynamic range. Her pianissimos are thrilling, and her rapid passagework almost flawless"
The Washington Post Philip Kennicott;
- Anna was regarded the best voice of the decade - Wahshinton Post.
Hantipas, cut the crap, you moron! Anna's career is just beginning - she is doing better and better!
I will have you know that Netrebko just had a concert where 14,500 people gave her a standing ovation. Tickets to her concert were sold in 14 minutes! Her Lucia is among "GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET". She is regarded as soprano of the decade (Washington Post). So you may shit on her pages forever - you are just a loser who can only bash successful people out of envy. Whom are you kidding?
I think the comments (I can't call them arguments) have become extremely silly. The contentiousness makes me suspect that it is done for a purpose--either VlamusRU is insecure about his masculinity, or these are publicists for Ms.Netrebko, hoping to stir up some sort of excitement. I've made my points. If you cannot respond to them with intelligence or at least something relevant to Dvorak's musical intelligence, then I have only compassion for you.
Beautiful and exquisite voice, great performance! Sad and very pathetic that people get so easily distracted from a voice and music like this by the performer's long legs. Very disappointing, however, if that's the case don't watch the video, just listen. DON'T HATE - APPRECIATE!
I'm sure making love to Anna;s version of Heat Wave would be fun. Some people have to resort to insults and curses because they're intellectually challenged when it comes to rational arguments. Just like some singers have to resort to provocative and titillating images because they're emotionally challenged when it comes to real music. Fortunately for us,singers like Lucia Popp, Fredericka von Stade, Renee Fleming, and others need resort to nothing but their musical intelligence and their heart.
Let me just add, I don't want to stop Anna Netrebko from furthering her own career. Just let her do it by writing her own songs, like Madonna, and like that professional, let her stand or fall on her own merits, before a particular kind of audience----not hide behind the culturally respected facade of an opera diva while flaunting her body like any common chorus girl. Lovers of the music of Dvorak, deserve better. So, I truly believe, do the talents of Ms. Netrebko.
@grayforester Sorry I took so long to reply. You're right. Anna Netrebko is too intelligent for that crappiness. But Opera has its conventions and MTV has its conventions. Each are legitimate for their particular audiences. Those audiences have their different levels with different expectations. It only becomes absurd and silly when the levels and/or the expectations are mixed up. Luckily there are singers, like Lucia Popp, who are not confused.
This interpretation does not convey to me why Dvorak wrote it: a young girl, vulnerable, naive, alone, full of painful longing and exalted expectation, asking the moon to make her lover think of her across the moonlit countryside, asking, of all things, the inconstant, fickle moon, that must...that has to...wane...For all her beautiful voice, this singer distracts from, distorts, and insults its emotional meaning.
if you were an opera singer, I'd think you are just jealous because you don't have a body like she does haha. being an opera singer doesn't mean you have to be of a car size. it is just the thing some old school people have to face.
@DontCareAboutMe I think your experience of visual media is limited. Go take a look at Ingmar Bergman's The Magic Flute, and see if you can find a direct line to this kind of staging. He'd have used an inflatable swan toy in his Swan Lake, had he filmed one.
I hate to put down anything that promotes the most beautiful versions of masterpieces. But I can't hear Dvorak, I can't see Rusalka, I can't think of the plot, I can't even hear the music, all I've got in my mind are those long, sexy legs.
@runupahill1 - It's called "self promotion", with some fine viewing and a superb voice that goes with it. She has a great career and future ahead of her. I wish her well.
i really hate this kind of videos... it's like she was making a "romantic" video ... but it's not cristina aguilera , its antonin dvorâk... and this aria is sooo beautifull.. i like anna netrebko's voice , but i thought that , she has something more big than her voice and that is her EGO...
mmm , i don't know... but this isn't the first video of this type that she makes , there's another video i thought is "quando m'en vo". And if she doesn't choose de video why's she doing it?...
What's sad about it... she's an artist, and this is how she is expressing herself. If you don't prefer the graphics, yet enjoy the music, then close your eyes.
yes... and artist . Please tell me what is the "art" in this video ? I cant see it , and im and artist too... ( i have studied ballet for years ,and paint , and write, and of course sing )and by the way have years of art appreciation . Its just... that i think. that this kind of video have no sense , and sound for me like pure superficiality. I totally disagree with the concept of "opera diva".
Well that's unfortunate for you then. I am also an artist (I also studied ballet for 13 years, paint on commission, and am a bassoonist). Just because it makes no sense to you doesn't always mean that there isn't sense to be made.
What a disgrace to classical Opera. Hey, if it's money she's after, good for her. However she should not destroy opera in the meantime. Classical Opera suffered a death-blow when La Davina Callas sang no more. All that followed never measured up to her, and never will.
Callas was overestimated - exactly like Karajan. Here more the image becomes important than the actual skill - true to the motto: The Callas is so famous, consequently so it must be also brilliant and beyond any doubt.
Only a handful "YT-Callas-freaks" believe her voice was something special, ..... it's a cheap witticism!
She's forgotten like every singers of the past. What remind at Callas was her stage presence and the fact, that she was a Mezzo!!
Vocally she's good here. I saw her live in the Met Puritani. She owned the stage, was powerful vocally (better than the other singers) and a good actor. Yes she's beautiful. Remember, today is a video generation, so if she brings people to the opera house via video, all the better. Do you think Beyonce really sings in her videos either? She's not La Stupenda or La Divina. She's Anna, 21st century diva: not like the past. Go to opera and love it. It's not like it was, and it's still exciting.
Do you honestly believe this kitschy video which is nothing but pure shit can actually bring fans to the opera house. It's upsetting me because she is one of the most well known artists in the opera but compromised her dignity as an artist by making this video. This is nothing more than cheap Karaoke video made in some third world country to me.

I love her she is so pretty. Usually we think as opera singers as big fat ladies but she is so gorgeous. I lke her in swimming suit or at any dress. Fan number one.
Gracias por tu comentario y por tu respuesta en video. He visitado tu canal y me ha gustado mucho.
She is an alright performer, but this video seems plastic.. and inorganic. Rusalka is a spirit of raw nature, not a makeup covered dame who sits around in a hotel swimming pool in an 800 dollar evening dress on a floating toy.

I agree with the fact that Netrebkos performance and singing lack both naturality and quality. She seems to be promoted like a common pop- diva... And her voice is rather average. I guess her label has even corrected the records, because live she sounds absolutely indifferent and amateur! Yes, she has talent. But she is not excellent! The spirit of musik is insulted by her prostitution to the commercialism and consumerism of hardly- educated, non- classical orientated public.
Is better REAL commercialism than "beyond the scene" commercialism consisting above all in that: LICKING THE ASS OF EVERY STUPID APPARATCHIK OF CLASSICAL MUSIC POLITICAL BUREAU THAT IS OFF COURSE INTERESTED IN ALL EXCEPT TALENT QUALITY COMPETENCE HARDWORK CULTURE AND C., and that actually is the main way for many "opera stars" to construct their "careers". ;-)
You have more-or-less unwittingly described exactly how she has arrived where she is. Do you really think her talent exceeds her packaging? She is NOT a talented singer. She does NOT work hard. Her voice has NOT improved one iota since she arrived, and she clearly has no interest in investigating roles beyond the most obvious/cheap interpretation (read her interviews; she admits as much).
And I repeat that the Netrebko has a beautiful voice allows that them of the beautiful executions, if then the nature has given to the beauty this to them is pregio not a argument of controversy. The truth and that to listen to the Netrebko with prejudgment. But listened with it appeal to this Artist instead always making controversies!

For me and, I believe for more other people, Netrebko is only an excelent comercial operation of marketing. Today is cool to say: Oh, Ana Netrebko, I love her! But I repeat: marketing: 50%, voice; 50% Can someone imagine von Stade, Gheorghiu, Fleming,, Matilla, Popp... in a bath-tub!
It's easy to mesmerizing people with a good marketing plain, there's abundant precedents, in the present and in the past. But voice... voice... where is the voice of Netrebko? Compare with von Stade and answer me.
i am just wondering what a normal person will do first if he is confronted with the great fortune of having a woman as delicious as she is coming out naked from the shower but singing so divinely and exquisitely. i do not think i would know what to do first. but, later ...
xgianpatrick every lyric singer must study and to make it for all the career, if the voice wants to consevare, I can say an ugly woman to dress itself, to a beautiful woman I do not say it. The Netrebko beautiful or is dressed or in mutandine, stà always well! The Callas because it has lost the voice, because instead continuing it has to study has been put to make the beautiful life with Onassis.
then this video is not a recitazione to the theatre, and a " videoclip" where a director approaches the beauty and the fascination of a woman, to the cold beauty of the lunar light, and ago to sing, not c' it is nothing of scandalous.
i will never ask her to do that. she will be just get quiet or get guttural anyway in the middle of certain activities that should follow naturally, in a way of speaking.
Oh Anna, quanti pensieri, quanta dolcezza, ninfa candida fai che la Luna non vada via, stia con noi per farci godere della tua voce, della tua incantevole bellezza.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT MUSIC AND EVEN LESS ABOUT MANNERS.
FIRST TINGH IS PARDONABLE, SECOND NOT.
IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND AN IRONIC COMMENT, IT'S YOUR PROBLEM. IF, BESIDES, THE ONLY ARGUMENT YOU HAVE TO DEFEND YOUR OPINIONS IS THE INSULTE, VERY WELL, THIS DESCRIBE YOU GOOD ENOUGH BUT MAKE YOU NOT MERITORIUS TO BE IN YOUTUBE. SO I DON'T WANT TO LOSE EVEN A SECOND MORE WITH YOU.

You are so right! Anna has a better voice by far than spears, but anna is a third class soprano compared to Callas and the other first class sopranos. And yes, sex sells, that explains this sex based Rulsaka video
She is beautiful both in form and voice, but the staging leaves me cold.

The Washington Post Philip Kennicott;
- Anna was regarded the best voice of the decade - Wahshinton Post.

If you cannot respond to them with intelligence or at least something relevant to Dvorak's musical intelligence, then I have only compassion for you.
runupahill1 2 years ago

Netrebko.
runupahill1 2 years ago
you sound like an old maid.
VlamisRU 2 years ago
@runupahill1 Does she have to write songs that are as crappy as Madonna's?
grayforester 1 year ago
@grayforester Sorry I took so long to reply. You're right. Anna Netrebko is too intelligent for that crappiness. But Opera has its conventions and MTV has its conventions. Each are legitimate for their particular audiences. Those audiences have their different levels with different expectations. It only becomes absurd and silly when the levels and/or the expectations are mixed up. Luckily there are singers, like Lucia Popp, who are not confused.
runupahill1 1 year ago
This interpretation does not convey to me why Dvorak wrote it: a young girl, vulnerable, naive, alone, full of painful longing and exalted expectation, asking the moon to make her lover think of her across the moonlit countryside, asking, of all things, the inconstant, fickle moon, that must...that has to...wane...For all her beautiful voice, this singer distracts from, distorts, and insults its emotional meaning.

more than opera it looks like an advert for some fine alcohol, new model of car ... etc.

if you were an opera singer, I'd think you are just jealous because you don't have a body like she does haha. being an opera singer doesn't mean you have to be of a car size. it is just the thing some old school people have to face.

It's not like it was, and it's still exciting.
dt195k2 2 years ago
Do you honestly believe this kitschy video which is nothing but pure shit can actually bring fans to the opera house. It's upsetting me because she is one of the most well known artists in the opera but compromised her dignity as an artist by making this video.
LeonieMCBreckner 3 years ago
Is better REAL commercialism than "beyond the scene" commercialism consisting above all in that: LICKING THE ASS OF EVERY STUPID APPARATCHIK OF CLASSICAL MUSIC POLITICAL BUREAU THAT IS OFF COURSE INTERESTED IN ALL EXCEPT TALENT QUALITY COMPETENCE HARDWORK CULTURE AND C., and that actually is the main way for many "opera stars" to construct their "careers". ;-)
ad80ad 3 years ago
You have more-or-less unwittingly described exactly how she has arrived where she is. Do you really think her talent exceeds her packaging? She is NOT a talented singer. She does NOT work hard. Her voice has NOT improved one iota since she arrived, and she clearly has no interest in investigating roles beyond the most obvious/cheap interpretation (read her interviews; she admits as much).

Compare with von Stade and answer me.

goerizal 3 years ago
Well, I'd ask her to put on a robe, put away the pool toy, and take some voice lessons.
xgianpatrick 3 years ago
xgianpatrick every lyric singer must study and to make it for all the career, if the voice wants to consevare, I can say an ugly woman to dress itself, to a beautiful woman I do not say it. The Netrebko beautiful or is dressed or in mutandine, stà always well! The Callas because it has lost the voice, because instead continuing it has to study has been put to make the beautiful life with Onassis.
