For months after i came back to America, i asked myself am i really a chinese? In the end, i just realized that there is no point for me to battle between whether I have been white washed or not. Im just going to live the life that i want to live and do the things i want to do.
As long as i live in america, i will be considered as a minority. However, inevitably, b/c i came here at a young age, my thought process is going to be different from the chinese natives.
wow, i felt i can be one of the interviewee for this clip. Like the chinese girl in the video, i was born and raised in tianjin for the first 12 yrs of my life, been living in the State for almost 9 yrs now.
For a period of time, i had identity crisis too, especially when i went back to tianjin in the winter of 05. When i was in china, every1 treated me like a foreigner b/c of the way i spoke and behaved myself, it was just different from the locals. (continued...
I really liked what was said about "not wearing a mask". It helps nowadays to think of myself as a "drifter" - still a foreigner wherever I go, yet somehow free of the mental images signified by "immigrant". I'm no different than the typical college exchange student, other than the fact that I was 6 at the time instead of 18.
great vid. I am a Chinese who's moved to Japan at age 6 and Canada at age 10 and still here. I'd love to go somewhere else in the near future and discover...
South Africa? .. my former boss was from South Africa .. He gave up his farm and came to US because the economy there was so bad. Seems like it's still a mess there.
that lovely American-Chinese lady seems she was fed up with China, because of what...?
she is very westernized and she should live in America.
I am Chinese and I love China, I can spend 20 years in another foreign coutry; but i can always go back China and know, I will never be an "outsaider" again.
@freestyle217 No, Wei Wei said she was bored with America/its politics so she came to China. She said she hoped that if and when she did leave eventually leave China it will not be because she hated it. She implied that others left because they got too cynical - but didn't say of what: presumably of the gap between the rhetoric of the governing class and their behaviour.
@freestyle217 why should anyone be an outsider...we are all from the earth. With the modern age breathing down our necks race, borders, and lines mean less and less. Today, the U.S. really has no race because its so open. The same will happen to China as it takes its place as the number one superpower.
Hi Dawei! I like all your videos! u approach different aspects of Beijingers' life in a very creative way. I was a born in Beijing, but moved to Canada when i was little. Seeing all ur vids give me such a refreshing memory about home. Keep it up!
Brilliant! So interesting! I would love more of that. Length and format great. Its wonderful that you just let the interviewees speak ... and don't interrupt.
they buy apartment in beijing and get jobs and then they think they can become a beijinger. Please !DO !Don't kid me huh! remember u are still outsider forever. same ur fucken child!
and to that fat guy,you think you feel like a outsider cause dif culture?that's crap, the main reason is ur arrogance, you despise others ,you feel like you are better, thats the reason,i guess it have something to do with ur misery childhood, that hidding on the tree thing.
him hiding in a tree doesn't constitute a misery childhood for on that was his first day at an american school and it is plainly stated he had a very good childhood on the beach and would like his children to have a similar childhood. He feels like an outsider because of trolls/people like you with comments like banana lady and fat guy and your own ignorance shining through every orofice it's no wonder they feel misunderstood by their own race.
that banana lady(white inside ,yellow outside) is just so stupid, you dont say any country is boring in front of a camra, and if you grow up in USA,how come you know such ridiculous thing like chinese woman dont shave,as i said ,you are white inside ,you have a american mind,so stop pretending that you know all about chinese.
it is him. i don't know what he's doing now (apparently freelance translation) but he used to hang out at a skateboard shop in the the university district and all the nightclubs. pretty nice guy.
people need to upload more clips like this. I prefer funnier stuff myself, check out dolphinhump. lostfrog . com , I laughed so hard I got kicked out of class! haha.
What an interesting video. Props to the hardhat guy. I thought he was a little bit strange after the Muzimei video, but this was a hell of a show. 12 years in China is a freaking long time, good on ya.
at the other hand, nobody would have any problem hearing from you after a few years when you would confirm your idea that China's a "cynical" country, which means Chinese culture is also not good for you... OMG, you're just a little angel who's the enemy of the state wherever you go.. what you need to get serious about right now is scientology..
i think telling you to shut the fuck up is an understatement. American culture truly is in many respects asphyxiating, you only need to step out from your little pocket life and observe it from the outside to understand what I am saying, although even then you may still not be able to comprehend.
It's funny that you would mention Elaine Chao, who, having reached the highest echelons of white culture, unable to speak her native tongue, and marrying a white man, can still be even considered Chinese? Perhaps by wanting to remain true to her heritage, the girl naturally would feel a sense of asphyxiation.
oddly hilarious lines from the 106 yo punk staying true to his heritage shooting a lame rap vid on a "Love Story" soundtrack, wearing a bandanna.. to filter the asphyxiating American air, or urban Chinese smog, hack spit.
trust me, if you are doing what Elaine Chao's doing you are not gonna get bored, the only reason you are now is because you suck so much that u need to go "back" and work for the CCTV, and at the same time, not knowing what other people "expect" you to know and "feel like crying" everyday..
If you are being asked seriously, with a camera rolling, about some moments when you may feel alienated living in the US and you come up with something about shaving your armpits at age of 11, then here comes my question: what would you know NOW when every time you think of the country you grew up in you experience asphyxia that would legitimate your comment on American culture as being "boring"...??
While I don't begrudge them, I just wished I had gotten a more patient and kind reaction. But who am I kidding? We're were 13 back then and neither of us had much tact.
this video has some dodgy editing her comments have been taken as chinese culture is boring by somebody and american culture is boring by another 0.0. The latter is is what she said of course, but a little hard to get from the dodgy editing.
This is a great show and very interesting for someone who has never spent much time outside of Northern California. I'd like to watch on a regular basis but don't see a podcast feed. Any plans on doing a podcast?

How do you like this story:
When I was 13, some classmates were discussing the current election. Stupidly, I asked what their dads would vote for and got a harsh rebuff.
I wasn't even interested in their families' political view, but rather curious about the choice of parties.
My family never talked about politics, since my parents never had the opportunity to vote.
In retrospect, it was a very inapproriate question of a clueless 13 year-old immigrant.
