this is why you use salts, it could take weeks or even months to break a single password, TYI

password = md5(md5(password) + md5(rand(1000,999999))));

not totally secure, but your better off with it than with out it.

Look up MD5 collisions. Still requires a lot of computing power though as it might take millions of tries before you hit a collision. Read up on it anyway :)

But basically, all the certificate authorities have moved to things like SHA-1 or something similar. Its been proven that MD5 hashes can be cracked using collisions but the only people I've seen to doing it were using some 200 Playstation 3s so its not something we can do at home YET. But still, no one would use MD5 hashes anymore..

SHA-1 has been found to be vulnerable to collisions, too. However, as far as I know, no one has yet cracked a pair of MD5 and SHA-1 for the same message. That is, given a message, you could make another one with either the same MD5 or SHA-1, but not both at the same time.

Since every fixed-length hash function has a finite number of outputs (determined by the length of the hash output by the function), and since there are infinitely many inputs to hash functions, it follows logically that there are also infinitely many collisions to every fixed-length hash function or composition thereof. Or, more simply: Theoretically you could use a million different algorithms like MD5 together and there would still exist collisions between them all.

very informative video but i'm trying to get the dictionary attack to work for an MD5 hash and it won't work because i don't have the wordlist provided by cain the file list is blank and i'm not sure where to get one can anyone point in the right direction?

Dictionary attacks are otherly useless IF the pass is a hard string (like more than 6 characters, or complex symbol combos) Dictionary attacks look for most possibilities, where B_F compares all characters keys ''all possibilities'' If one inserts the data before hand... cracking hash values would be successful. My advice is use a extensive Rainbow Table Database, to crack the MD5 algorithm, by reversing the string to its original input.

If they're salted, though, its going to be difficult.

....to get a hash, you either hack a site and get em, or google "hash calculator". ( Please don't ask for a tutorial on how to hack sites. There are tooo many idiots who think they can watch a video and hack a site. ( Its a lot harder than it seems. ))
