@bakbakvini no, if you have a locking front and rear differential, you can get up anything if your left tires are both just spinning and the right ones are on solid concrete. top gear couldnt get up a hill cause it was wet, and that's hard to do with any vehicle that has shitty tires.

@thecardrawer10 top gear test was very biased. the car had performance tires with 315 section width. There is no car or suv in the world would have perform differently with those set of tires. The only weird part was when the car sled backward on the slope with gear on PARK and parking brake engaged. Otherwise it was not a objective test.

@bakbakvini On that hill it was half ice half tarmac. the AWD system realized that the left wheels were slipping so it put all the power to the right wheels because they had the grip. Thats how the system works. if it was full ice it would probably be harder for it to climb the hill. although i think it would be able to climb it. top gear just made it slip in there show to make a point.

@SangueVerde7 Hey SnagueVerde7! BMW uses an electronical operated liquid clutch to send torque to, mainly, the frond of the vehicle. The computer then monitors the traction in milliseconds (every millisecond there is) and it tries to 'predict' the movement of the wheels. The DSC should be kept on though, unlike conventional awd systems, xDrive won't work that well with the DSC off because the computer isn't 'allowed' to monitor the wheels anymore when its turned off. So keep it on and plough!

But what Top Gear did is trying to climb up a slippery hill in an X6 with summer performance tyres, probably the worst possible offroad settings and by just flooring the throttle. That whole Top Gear clip was just bad propaganda against the X6. Even Top Gear's beloved Range Rover would fail to go up that slippery hill if it had summer performance tyres on and all the vehicle settings set on street rather than offroad.

What kind of test would this be, they should be here in the city I live last winter when I towed out an Isuzu Trooper, an X5, an X6, Mercedes ML and Toyota Colorado - all with my 3.0 Litre Mercedes Diesel Grand Cherokee Jeep fitted with General AT2's. The Audi Q5 is better :) It works off road unlike this one. All audis with quattro are driven up ski jumps. The Bmw here is taken to a hill where only two wheels are on ice. Save your bmw for the summer and get an M3 not this ugly one.

@umop3pl5dn actually the half on ice half on dry is one of the hardest things for awd. without torque splitting to the tires with pavement a car wont track straight like that. if all 4 wheels slip its easy, just cut power. but if only 2 wheels slip simpler awd systems will spin. that said its no new innovation subaru and audi could do it in the 90s. still u need to send power to the wheels with grip to do that.

@marijnjoosens the point of the 4x4 BMW there is so that a customer that has money can get luxury, and performance, all the while being confident they won't get stuck in a snow storm or in some mud. if you took any BMW car through snow or mud it would more than likely get stuck. as for best 4X4 ever... i agree with the range rover being up there but the toyota is nowhere near. its cheaply built so it'll break often, costs to much to fix when it does
