The only time it is okay to say "nigga" is if you are black. I feel that is only appropriate that black people should say it because white people did and do use it as a bad term, not all white people, but most; and black people use it more like a joke, or as slang for themselves.

Hello im 'black' and from Queens,NYC but currently and have lived in Brooklyn,NYC for years and am 16 years old my family has a strong respectful chain of people within it so if i said nigga or even nigger to my grandma, she would have the same reaction yours did. I'm 18 from Oklahoma. I hate it when people(especially black people) say "nigga". It is now used in modern times as a way to greet someone, but in my mind, it still has the negative connotations. Nigger went to Nigga when black entertainers tried to "reclaim" the negative word and use it in a positive way...which is ignorant beyond belief. It bothers me to a great extent because to me it's still extremely offensive even if it is put after a word like beautiful or you're an amazing.. I have noticed that we are all really in tune with each others feelings, that is to say our tone of voice, body language, stance, and facial expression. I've only seen ANYONE take offence to the word nigger/nigga when used in a negative or derogatory way. I think that's the way it should be. If one uses word that has been relatively desensitized, we should all work together to reinforce that the negative meaning is not okay, because you can't stop people from speaking.

While living in Oklahoma it was very rare that I heard the word , but i found that when i moved to South Carolina i heard it ALOT more and now it has got to the point where I kinda use it to address someone.
