  • I loved how you used a community theator video for "I know things now". That production had some awesome performers and sets.

  • Michael Crawford is freaking amazing.

  • What is Les Mis about?

  • For Good makes me cry only when it's Kristin Chenoweth or Megan Hilty singing the part of Glinda.

Master of the House is brilliant!

Epiphany is musical genius and I'm one of the few Broadway fans who really preferred Johnny Depps's Sweeney and HBC's Mrs. Lovett

Music of the Night is stunning.

  • Totally agree with you on the best melody is Master of the house!! :D

  • OK, I'll go along with "For Good" for best duet, but only when it's Chenzel.

  • who is singing send in the clowns i feel like a failure because i dont recognize her

  • @KeladrysLove Bernadette friggin amazing beyond all reason Peterson ._.

  • Exuse me? Where is, well, ANY song from Billy Elliot?! Those were the most beautiful, inspiring, moving, emotional songs. Where are they?!

  • i totolly agree with most of these, been brought up to love musicals with a passion. for best female solo though, if you haven't already, check out 'coleen sexton - someone like you', it's from jekyll and hyde, i recently performed it for my a levels, and it's now one of my favourite songs :)

  • Best Male Solo has to be "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables sung by Colm Wilkinson. How can you not listen to tha song and not cry?

  • It's Nick Jonas :)

But please don't ask me why he's there :)

  • 7:52 i sang this for my talent show w/ my BFF. we didnt win but thats just cos the track wasnt loud enough & we got off beat

  • 5:18 doesnt he remind you of jonas?

  • OMFGGGGG, MATT LUCAS!!!!!!!!!!!! :DDDD

  • I'm not being snobby or anything but I would have to disagree with your best female solo choice. I think that Grizabell's solo song Memory from Cats is the best female solo. Just sayin.

  • *cue epic flag waving*

  • tks

  • Divas lamment? is sara ramirez?

  • @ABEdamian I believe it is.

  • @nytheatrecritic no, the cast is from the play, michael crawford and (sigh) Sara Brighmann.

  • @1935Dora yes but the clip was a promo for the show

  • the clip from the music of the night, is that like from a movie or something?

  • @thepuppyandpanda it was a preview recording done by ALW to promote the show

  • Wow...the i know things now clip is from a community theater production but you can't even tell up against all the broadway clips haha kudos to them

  • YES Finally someone has made a video with this title and succeeded! <3

  • @shaaaannonful you're comment made me smile lol

  • I forgot who are the women from the totally wicked, WICKED

  • Very nicely done! I liked the categories and the format you chose to present in. Though I didn't agree with *all* of the choices, I agreed with many.

One question; why is I Know Things Now a child's song? She usually is played by an adult/teen in non-school productions, and the song itself is about growth. It has the feeling of a much older person than Red starts out as. I would've gone with Castle on a Cloud; it shows more fragility and innocence...though your list was already Les Mis heavy.

  • @antibaka6502 First thank you for your comments. i chose I Know Things Now because it represents a turning point in a child's life a theme that all must go through and the song captures it well. Castle on a Cloud is a beautiful song and comes close but it lacks the complexity of the issue that IKTN goes through.

  • @nytheatrecritic That makes sense. Good answer. Overall, I do think IKTN was a good choice, just not one I would have thought of. Also, THANK YOU for using footage of Bernadette Peters and not Catherine Zeta-Jones for Send in the Clowns. I personally don't care for the song, but Bernadette's version is by far the best (in my not so humble opinion).

  • Best child song, Did you ever see Annie? Tomorrow? Do you ever hear ANYONE humming the song you picked,,,

  • yes i have seen Annie, but i use my song choice based on quality not popularity.

  • @paulatriedes my opinion no need to get snobby two about it

  • @paulatriedes just saying, i hum ALL of these songs (except for the sween tod one, but just cos i havent seen it cos its an R rated movie). including Annie. i was actually annie in annie (god dont you LOVE saying stuff like that like pippin in pippin or the fiddler in the fiddler on the roof, etc.). not trying to offend, might have taken the comment the wrong way, but whatever. i know ALL OF THEM (cept sweeny tod cos of wat i said above)

  • my opinion: best ensemble song: i'm getting married in the morning

  • is that nick jonas ?

  • good call on For Good for duet...but way to pick a part that is 99% idina...you could have use the best part of that song..ANYMOREEEEEEEEE

  • Really? Send in the Clouds? Not And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going? Not On My Own?

  • @82slhh82 it is just my opinion. SITC is very subtle and conveys a moment in a very realistic sense. i feel And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going is conveying the same message but from the opposite standpoint which is not to say that it is any better but i personally prefer a song to connect on a realistic level. On My Own i LOVE it is probably my most played song(kinda sad) but something in me just couldn't give it the female solo spot maybe ill make a list of top female solos next :D

  • hey what song was in the intro? :D

  • Best Female Solo: Thank You for not choosing I Dreamed a Dream

Best Male Solo: Predictable (Maybe that's a good thing for the song)

    Best Ensemble: Very Predictable

Best Melody: Not sure on your choice there

Best Child Song; Unique and great song

Best Bouncy Song: Did you make this category so you could include that song?

    Funniest Song: YES!!!

Best Duet: You showed a solo section of a duet. What?

Best Angry Song: Maybe a little too predictable

  • I agree with most of these. If it were my list (which it's not, & I respect that) the best male solo would be "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Phantom of the Opera. I would agree with "Epiphany" if the clip were of George Hearn or something. Otherwise, "No Good Deed" Wicked.

  • Defying Gravity is the bets female solo.

  • Idina is so perfect for Elphaba.

  • best upbeat song should have been the all american prophet from book of mormon. best child solo should have been somewhere from the current broadway version of west side story. and funniest song should have been any song from the book of mormon.

  • I love sweeny Todd its my favorite I like scary things so I loved that movie I also love Johnny depp so I think Johnny depp is hot aww

  • Yooooooou can't stop the beat!!!

  • Hell yeah! I love Master of the House!!!

  • Epiphany can not possibly be the best angry song that past Broadway, even though i LOVE Johnny Depp ;p from the little knowledge i have of Broadway, i would've chosen "No Good Deed" from Wicked. "For Good" as best duet was an excellent choice :) and im glad u put Elphaba's part. i freakin love Idina Menzel. Gr8 video. Was that Sara Ramirez at the end?

  • @mconstanta ty so much for your opinion it is so interesting to see others thoughts on this subject. The reason i chose Epiphany is due to the complexity of the song, so much goes on in his head during the song and the final conclusion he reaches is that everyone deserves to die as opposed to No Good Deed(which is one of my all time favorites) were elephaba gives into the world around her.

  • @nytheatrecritic i completely get why you chose that song. i just think that no good deed has more anger in it because it's the moment where she's had all she can take and she's like thinking "im no longer trying to be good when all of you think im bad". basically both songs show the feeling, so it comes down to how each of us can relate to each song.:p

  • @mconstanta I've looked at several best broadway songs video made by different people. NO ONE HAS BUT NO GOOD DEED! That is an amazing solo!

  • @ThyLovelyMuse No Good Deed is a incredible solo that ranks highly however other songs Send in the Clowns, Rose's Turn, and On My Own, carry much more power with me and i think it is mainly due to the lyrics.

  • @mconstanta a god angry ballad is easy as life from Aida! :)

  • @Mawganna13 im gonna check it out thank u:))

  • i frkn love hairspray :)

  • I would have chosen "Finishing The Hat" for best male solo and "Springtime For Hitler/Heil Myself" as the funniest song. Pretty good choices otherwise. Not what I would have chosen in most categories, but hey, shows like Les Mis and Wicked are good shows to get people hooked on musical theatre. Personally, Les Mis made me love musical theatre.

  • im very curious to what you would have chosen, besides finishing the hat/springtime for Hitler. ty so much for your comment, i have seen a fair amount of shows but im still working on discovering more :D and Les Miz is simply amazing!!!

  • wow.. Les Mis's Best

  • Great choices for the categories...but there's a few changes I'd make. :) I'd say the Funniest Song would be "My New Philosophy" from You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. :D. Kristin does that HILARIOUSLY...or even "Popular" from Wicked, if done right. Possibly "Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast. I think the Wicked finale is one of the best ensembles I've heard, or "Seasons of Love". Otherwise, great list.

  • Are you freakin serious, I already knew that Nick Jonas was in Les Mis but it ticks me off to hear them change the songs, they are perfect the way they were dont change the notes!!!

  • @TheLesMiser14 look one thing i have learned is that you have to be opened minded. there is nothing wrong with the new song/notes. now did the original need changing probably not but that is no reason to dismiss other versions. people who are stuck in the past cannot appreciate the future.

  • DO I DETECT NATHAN LANE IN NO BIZ?

  • @Broadwaypuppet very good ears yes it is :D i just love him!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very good choices for all catagories

  • Hey, good video!! Can I have your opinion about my selection of best songs from musicals?? Thanks!!

  • @acr8080 I really like your selection i feel you needed a few more Sondheim songs as they are incredible!!!!!!!!!

  • YEAH! the music of the night is definately th best male solo!

  • you can't stop the beeeaaaat!

  • I am 11 and this is all so obiously better than justin beiber. How come my friends are so deluded? I do love les miz and wicked. Cabaret is cool too

  • @BagOfSticksFork Theater is unfortunately not for everyone though i wish more people would give it a chance. Like i said before it makes me hopeful that so many young people, including myself, embrace the theater giving it hope for the future.

  • @BagOfSticksFork

Okay, we are like the same age I'm 12... IKR!!! I love theater and many people prefer some of the stupidest crap on the radio... Les Miz is probably one of my favorite Broadway, and Wicked as well. You my friend, are a smart person!!

  • @Greengenegirl Les miz is epic. At last someone who likes the best of theatre

  • @BagOfSticksFork Yea, it is epic and I am gonna go see it for my B-day!!! Super excitedd my fave song is 'On My Own'... what's yours??

  • @Greengenegirl probably.......the last do you hear the people sing and for solo.....on my own! though I looove i dreamed a dream

  • @BagOfSticksFork you are exatly like me! im your age, i LOVE les mis and wicked , but none of my friends like broadway.

  • thumbs up for jonny depp and helena botham carter!

  • There's no business like show business!! Is it bad or sad that I am 15 years old female and I would rather look up Broadway music than Today's music. Also I was wondering I am making a mixed cd of upbeat fun songs from Broadway to listen to when I wake up for school. Do you have any great suggestions. I will be using some from your list like Master of the house and You can't stop the beat. Any ideas?

  • @clownaphobia12 it is not sad at all. I'm 19 and almost all the music on my iPod is from Broadway!!!!! even my 15 year old brother would rather listen to Broadway then todays music :D as for songs to recommend there are many from Anything Goes like ANything Goes lol or Blow Gabriel Blow, Brotherhood of Man from How to Succeed in Business, Don't Rain on My Parade from Funny Girl (Barbra Streisand Version) Mad Hatter, Off With Their Heads from Wonderland, I Feel Pretty from west side story.

  • @clownaphobia12 I'm always so happy to hear of other young people with a love for the theatre. if you are really interested in broadway i would suggest looking into the music of Stephen Sondheim the man is a musical genius who has created some of my favorite shows and if you watch the video i believe 3 of those songs are his.

  • @nytheatrecritic Thanks and My biggest dream is to make it on Broadway but I have an alto voice so I always try to lower the pitch of most songs but I am afraid that when I try out I will have to sing it in the original version. Also I am planning on making a video of me singing one of my favorite broadway songs: On my Own from Les Miserables. I hope you will watch it and tell me what you think!!

  • @clownaphobia12 i shall and aa bit of advise they do want you to sing simmer to the orignal but they also want you to make it your own as well. of example if you listen to different versions of On my own (which is also one of my favorite songs but i prefer I Dreamed a Dream, a bit more tragic) you will find they all have your unique style. my god i wish i could sing lol but without a vocal coach that is not gonna happen lol so i will live vicariously though Sutton, LuPone,Peters and Salonga

  • @nytheatrecritic Haha I know what you mean I am a good singer but I no where close to being a Salonga. Man she is my idol I would sooo love to sing with her or even just meeting her would be a dream come true for me!

  • @clownaphobia12 after seeing her in the 25th cast i have become obsessed with her and i can't wait to see her when she comes to broadway i don't usually stage door shows(except Follies because of Bernadette Peters :D) but when she comes ill be running to the stage door lol.

  • @nytheatrecritic You are so lucky that you get to actually see a Broadway Musical in person. I actually started to love Broadway when my grama had me watch her video copy of CATS and ever since then I have craved to see one. The only way I get to see any is through dvds or on youtube :/ but I shouldn't complain because I get to go to one this year or next year because I am going to be a close-up student and they go to New York for like 2 weeks :D So I am excited

  • @nytheatrecritic Thank you! For putting up Broadway music!! That's all I do at night -- looking at possible audition music and sing!! I love people like you!!!

  • @clownaphobia12

I am now 40 - but when I was 15 ...I loved broadway music more than other music and guess what ...

Always really have ... love all music - but my soul is in broadway music

OK if you do not already have this in your library - you need to get Memphis ...

Amazing songs..I too have mixed CD of up music - love Wicked, Chicago, all things Glee LOL

  • You don't have Memory from CATS? Come on.

  • @noodle0912 lol Memory is an amazing song,(one of my favorite solos) but you just cant beat Sondheim on Send in the Clowns :D

  • ONE DAY MORE! i love les mis

  • @1997Ginga i agree the energy of that song is soooo awesome!!!!!

  • @rljmstar19 ty so much im so glad to share my love of the theater with others.

  • thank you!
