The fact that so many people feel the need to bash Kiss is a true testament to their greatness. These non-fans feel threatened by their popularity and consider all kiss fans idiots. The proof is in the popularity, Period! What is the purpose of Rock n Roll? Better yet, what is the purpose of music in general? TO ENTERTAIN THE PEOPLE!!! and people will buy what they like. So, whoever sells the most albums wins! whether the critics like them or not.
you two wouldn't know showmanship and gut-felt rock and roll if it bit ya in the ass..... Go watch your Lady Gaga, suck each other off and keep your opinions to yourselves...
I can remember how bad they were then...but when I accidently hit play on this video , it brings back the feelings of how I couldnt get to the radio fast enough to change the station...Epic FAIL.....I like to rock ...but this isnt rock .....and Gene's laughing his butt off with all your money.... Its like watching a group of rocky horror transvestites just listen to ACE FRELEYS ending solo....come on ! wtf, and by no means is this Aces fault...I think Im going to be sick now!
@jamesdewar: Yes, this song was released on the Dressed To Kill album, but its actually a much older song...They were fooling around with that riff in the Wicked Lester days ; )
So why does EVH get credit for tapping? Ace was doing it before and, at the time, better. Ace was a innovator, ahead of his time, who played from his gut and soul. Kiss has definitely went to shit with the tribute band. However, these Midnight Special clips are of Kiss at there very, classic, best....period
Kiss..still with their infamous ss logo. Soon these polite jewish New York businessmen knew they should only cater for 12 year olds, and leave real rock'n'roll to Aerosmith.
How Brilliant was a show like "The Midnight Special"? They are like a Rock n Roll video museum. I know most 'weein'people's point of view is that this is some how been brain stamped as 'dinosaur rock' only to be sampled from. But. This is where your music today comes from. These people as human beings left this berhind for you to enjoy. Or spit on...But spit on it AFTER you truly listen to it ALL with an open mind.....????Jus Sayin...
Peter was all over the place. His right hand did not really keep time. He just played whatever came to his mind. He was perfect for KISS. He and Ace kept them in a perfect original groove that really hasn't be duplicated by any other band.
What KISS had was charisma...great bass & drum beat, strong guitar work from stanley and ear splitting lead guitar from ACE ..who was way ahead of eddie van halen etc. for finger picking. For live raw great heavy rock Kiss were much better than the zeppelins, purples etc. who were more rock & folk than rock & roll!!!
Ace does not get enough credit! He was one of the top players over a 20 yr span that produced so many greats but yet he is seldom spoke of in the so-called guitar expert mags and top 10,20 lists or even top 100s.Joe Walsh,Glen Buxton, Derek Trucks, Mick Ronson,Leigh Stephens,Steve Howe,Danny Gatton,Zoot Horn Rollo(Bill Harkleroad),Dickey Betts, Leslie West are a few others that should get more attention. Just a thought, nothing more.
plenty of stuff from the 70s was great (mick taylor era Stones is my fave period of theirs), but even though punk was invented, Zeppelin ruled, and many rocked, let's not sugar-coat the decade: progressive-rock was a wank-fest, glam (like this "band") was more gimmick than talent, A.M. radio schmaltz was all over the charts, and disco was invented too
this wasnt 1977. ace is still wearing the costume from the hotter than hell tour so this was more likely 74 or 75.his costume from 77 didnt look like this.

@Yodazilla While I would mostly agree I saw them on the first reunion tour and it was amazing. The fact that they have "replaced" Ace and Peter now with people in their costumes is a disgrace. They didn't do it back the first time because even THEY knew it was wrong, instead opting to go with Eric and Vinnie. But while the music is good.. the visual of a live show really compliments it and must be seen.
This was not from 1977. This was from 74-75 as shown by what they are wearing. This most likely was recorded during the Alive! tour. In 76-77 they "graduated" to the same costume as what's seen on the Destroyer and AliveII album covers. PR
I was a kid when Kiss came out and they were so rehearsed and over commercialized it was hard to look past the gimickiness of the makeup, stage ect. Yes James...'She' was released on 'Dressed To Kill', but like many of their songs from the first three albums, they were playing them live before they ended up on records...Just listen to Ace tear it up!!!
Give it up for Ace on lead guitar!!! Sets the standard for what a quitar solo should sound and look like. Where can I get a rocket launcher for my 58 Les Paul?
I seen kiss over 30 times threw my life the first was 76 i was 6 years old everytime ive seen them they gave 100% and Ive never forgotten that feeling I was part of somthing special
I think an intelligent argument can be made for this being the greatest rock and roll performance in history. All one has to do is watch the fans' reactions. At this point, not Zeppelin, not Sabbath, not Aerosmith...no one could even begin to approach KISS on that stage. I've shown this video to people who didn't even like KISS and they were simply astonished. I've seen it 100 times and it never gets old. The greatest band of all time.
It's amazing to me to see a KISS video that doesn't feature Paul or Gene! Ace and Peter really take over the show. I can see who really had the talent in this band now.
I'm not a KISS Army member, but when you consider how much of Simmons' family was wiped out in the Holocaust and how the band had to work its butt off in the early 1970s to break through, I have a lot of respect for them.
@restlessr84 That's a stupid ass statement to make. So, If u look at rap music would you make the same comparison or argument..? Just because some rappers maybe great grandchildren of slaves does that make their music better...not. KISS was ok and lets leave it at that. Gene is filthy rich and who cares how he got there.
@aguzmanpr Keep trying and maybe you'll convince me that i've made a "stupid ass" comment. On second thought, I doubt it.
Simmons, unlike most rappers (especially gangsta rappers) is a good citizen who doesn't wind up arrested all the time. And unlike those like the notorious b.i.g., simmons didn't resort to selling drugs despite growing up impoverished and arriving in america speaking no english.
@restlessr84 You're an idiot and a Gene Simmons nut hugger. Just becuase he is of Isreali desent doesn't make him a role model of any kind. Gene has always been a dick. A rich one at that. And who is talking about gangsta rappers anyway. I was referring to rappers in general you dimwit. Maybe he didn't sell drugs but I'm sure he used plenty of them.........
@aguzmanpr I'm going to let this slide because you really have no idea whatsoever who I am and what I do on a daily basis. (And you clearly don't know much about Simmons; he's actually VERY anti-drug). People who condescend and resort to personal attacks, which you have clearly done, aren't worth any more of my time. Have a very nice day.
@everyonedoesit2 yes i was joking, i forgot there is no joking in the United States. its all abut being serious. new law pass by the Obama administrated
I saw Kiss at the Amphitheater in Chicago 1975. They were at the top of their game in the mid 70s. Looks like we're gonna have ourselves a rock and roll party tonight!
For Good, Bad or otherwise..... this is the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place. I've recently commented to a friend that my style mainly comes from Ace Frehley and Dick Wagner. It was funny when he reminded me that sometimes they're the same person!
this is indeed KISS's strongest era. The dualing guitars here are thrilling, to those of us who love raw metal. Ace plays guitar about as raw as it could possibly be played! I call Ace the King of Raw Nasty Garage Band Guitar!
This was during the 'Hotter Than Hell' era before Ace began toying with the idea of the intro solo for this song, as is the case on 'Alive'. His soloing on this video is fucking superb. For the day, Ace Frehley was 'the shit'. Notice the neck tapping he does, a good 3 years before Van Halen was known. This was the raw-n-hungry 'heavy metal' KISS 73-75. The following albums were no less magical than the first 3. I enjoyed them all the way to 'Dynasty', which marked the end of the classic KISS era
This is the shit and I'm a long standing KISS fanatic . But,this performance was in '77 around that time Gene Simmons flew Van Halen out to NYC to record a demo/present the band to their manager (who opted to support the band Piper instead). During those sessions Eddie Van Halen played the solo to Christine Sixteen. This video of KISS kicks ass though and its thier live energy, pyrotechnics, musicianship and entertainment level that is unparalleled in my opinion.
This era was KISS's apex of talent. The guys were in their 20s, they were HUNGRY for rock and roll, they were healthy, and substances hadn't taken over yet. These guys were the acid rock of the time. True metal heads! Unfortunately KISS drifted away from this kind of raw metal....fan since 1976.
Yup, I saw Piper (Billy Squier) open for Kiss @ Omni in Atlanta, '77. I was 14, friend of mine's parents drove us from Knoxville, TN to Atl. I think it was right after Kiss Alive II came out, had it on 8-track(2 tapes), I'll stop rambling...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
probably THE most overrated band ever, but this isn't half bad. a little sloppy, but great energy and of course a good show, which is all they were really ever about.
pure rock n roll ace finger tapping, before eddie , the guitar lick before alex lifeson on working man, if this was zeppelin wannabe rock fans would love it more but its kiss who in these days were better live more energy and heavier rock than zeppelin.
It's very cool to see this video - thanks for posting. This was most likely 1975, though. The signal is Ace Frehley's costume. It was considerably "upgraded" by 1977.
I'm going to disagree with mrv1967. The 70's was awesome and to compare with the climate we live in now is definately untrue. When it came to music back then as to it is now, no contest. Those were good times.
@mrbrianmccarthy I have to agree completely. They weren't all fat and rich. Here they were still hungry and the music shows they still had something to prove to the world.
@Maxharddrive64 But when they got fat and rich, Gene turned into a typical Jew Yorker and started the ball rolling on his control machine. What you see here was the same band i saw in Pomona, Ca. in 1976. Raw eye of the tiger rock. Sadly gene would not let peter and ace be a full part of the band and let them take part in equal song writing and credits. And all that because he was all about the money only.
@barmtrail You dont see me disagreein' with you....But i dunno that id feel too bad for Ace and Peter..they'll live quite comfy off the roayalties from their body of work they did with Kiss for the rest of their days...lets put it this way they wont starve...
Are they sure about the date on this? These were the Alive 1 / Dressed to Kill costumes which would have been around '75. By '77 it would have been the Love Gun costumes. Or did another nerdier(than me) KISS fan already point that out ?lol
I'm sssooo sorry!! you are going to think i suck... i'm really sorry but what song is this?? I totally forgot I'm so sorry please don't make fun of me..
Anybody who wants to knock Kiss is really knocking heavy metal.Them and black sabbath are the real forefathers of the greatest musical movement know to mankind.Fuck all Kiss haters!!!
sorry but pearl drums are not the best the high end hardware is pretty good but sonor drums are the best !gibson guitars were the best when they were made in kalamazoo michigan but since they moved down to tennessee the quality has gone to shit !
Yeah... turns out there were dozens of guys doing before EVH. Steve Hackett, Brian May, Jeff Beck, Billy Gibbons, Frank Zappa, Duane Allman... EVH just did it a whole lot more :P.
Alittle irrelivent(sp)....but I thought as awesome as those boots are, they held the band back...oh well, who cares right.

Before Ace, there was a guy name 'Jimi' !!

This was back in the day when it was all about the BAND, not just the front man. They all brought it!

If only Michael Jackson had done his homework, and learned to handle pyro & hair product like these guys did: he might still be with us!

It's very cool to see this video - thanks for posting. This was most likely 1975, though. The signal is Ace Frehley's costume. It was considerably "upgraded" by 1977.

CLASSIC! No foot pedals...wa wa bars...just a freakin' guitar that sounds stunning!
wwdunn2009 2 years ago 2
What are 'wa wa bars'? Ace never used a wah pedal, and Ace & Paul have always played fixed bridge guitars. Just a heads up, not tryin' to be a dick.
meyers5150 2 years ago
he means Tremolo bars, or Whammy bars. oh wait, just realized you actually know what you're talking about. nevermind. /facepalm

I'm going to disagree with mrv1967. The 70's was awesome and to compare with the climate we live in now is definately untrue. When it came to music back then as to it is now, no contest. Those were good times.
Hobgoblin1985 2 years ago 11
@Hobgoblin1985 -u R never kiddin,the 70s ruled-(MUSIC)-there has never,never been a time like that era,ever.

@mrbrianmccarthy Yes!!! the early songs were the best.
hockeycoachbill 1 year ago
@hockeycoachbill They were hungry back then, and they did have certain magic then.
mrbrianmccarthy 1 year ago
@mrbrianmccarthy I have to agree completely. They weren't all fat and rich. Here they were still hungry and the music shows they still had something to prove to the world.
Maxharddrive64 1 year ago
@Maxharddrive64 But when they got fat and rich, Gene turned into a typical Jew Yorker and started the ball rolling on his control machine. What you see here was the same band i saw in Pomona, Ca. in 1976. Raw eye of the tiger rock. Sadly gene would not let peter and ace be a full part of the band and let them take part in equal song writing and credits. And all that because he was all about the money only.
barmtrail 1 year ago
@barmtrail You dont see me disagreein' with you....But i dunno that id feel too bad for Ace and Peter..they'll live quite comfy off the roayalties from their body of work they did with Kiss for the rest of their days...lets put it this way they wont starve...
Maxharddrive64 1 year ago
@Maxharddrive64 i agree if i was Ace i would be happy with what i wrote ..

Are they sure about the date on this? These were the Alive 1 / Dressed to Kill costumes which would have been around '75. By '77 it would have been the Love Gun costumes. Or did another nerdier(than me) KISS fan already point that out ?lol
ace2k707 2 years ago
man, the 70's must have been awesome! I wish I was born back then

This comment has received too many negative votes show
As a kid in the 70's I can say that today's climate is very smilar - it wasn't awesome.

alabamamrk 2 years ago
