@ThatHistoryGuy Gotta agree with you there. But it isn't just rap music. Popular music across the board has hit an all time low. If you're not model gorgeous, model thin or willing to look like a cheap hooker, who cares what kind of talent you've got.
This song makes one cry! So beautifully sung by Ella Fitzgerald, the First Lady of Song. I have taught voice for more than forty years and it is sometimes a thankless job because to sing properly takes practice and work that most are not willing to do. I have had them sign up with me and then complain about what I am teaching them. I studied with an opera teacher and with Gene Puerling of the Hi-Lo's for a short time. I also was taught by a great singer, Bob Jackson about phrasing.
@sweetbutdaring I know. the curse of reality TV has made the world a much more vulgar place. But I'm on the fence when it comes to censorship.. i mean, who's to say what's objectionable or not?
@jonwiley There are LIMITS. After all, people can let their kids watch whatever in their own homes. We don't need all kinds of stuff all over tv/radio etc. though.
@jonwiley i was surprised when i first heard this song. it's beautiful, but it's about sex. i just didn't think they talked about this back then, at least not in public
@jonwiley There's a few line changes in this version - the one you noted and the 'when love came and told me I shouldn't sleep' should actually be 'until I sleep where I shouldn't sleep' - And yup - too suggestive for the times!
I'm singing this song for a show I have Sunday, and by far this is my favorite version and my inspiration for my performance. It's so sincere, other people tend to make it more dramatic than it should, but Ella honestly tells a story of a man bewildering her.
Adorable music...it's a pity that nowadays american (and generally whole Western) music is just a pice of shit....black and white "artists" can't sing at all, there is only domination of vulgar , agressive, and hedonistic hip-hop, pop or rock....thanks God that we have youtube...
Old jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin-you can never find anyone like them. It's a shame that slow jazz like this is a little lost.
This is taken from Nat King Cole show.Ella in fine voice.Norman Granz the great record producer allowed his stable of artist to come on Nat's show.Nat was having problems getting commercial backing,so many artist would appear for no fee.
YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND!!! 'The Wallflowers' were so hacky and forgettable. Do you really believe they'll be playing that cornball bar band's music 40 years from now with and it'll have the same historical musical relevance and power of Bob Dylan's music? And didn't 'The Wallflowers' do that godawful theme song to the TV show 'Friends'? As crappy as music is today, I'm eternally grateful that the 'Wallflowers' are pretty much a forgotten band. AMEN!!!
The Wallflowers didn't do the "Friends" theme song. That was the Remembrandts.
Although I don't agree with the previous post about Dylan Sr. being a shell of himself, I HAVE to disagree with your assessment of the younger Dylan. Jakob's done a fine job as a songwriter, with a few hit songs and a Grammy to his name. And the Wallflowers are still together. Their 'best of' disc was released last week and they are currently on tour. They played the Fillmore in NYC earlier this month.
"Best Of" albums are always a sign of the death of a band. "The Rembrandts" and "The Wallflowers" are the same band. They may have different members, but they make same tired, unoriginal, poppy, garbage. Just my opinion. I'm a snob.
Ahhh....listening to her makes me think of this utterly beautiful girl I met yesterday. I kissed her overlooking the ocean on Granville Island and she is a jazz singer and sang a song on the fly about how I made her weak in the knees and it was a perfect night and this song perfectly describes that.
Whenever i hear a song i drift away into a beatiful fantasy... A world of beauty and birds singing, perching on a near by branch, passion and love, colour and life... And I alaways get a shiver down my spine and occasionally a teardrop in my eye... The sun as sharp as a knife but as light as a feather...The light of day and the dark of night... Movement of the tree's and the stillness of the mirky water...drifting away...drifting away...drifting away this is where i go...
everytime I hear this song I just get lost in a fantasy world of warm summer meadows with a nearby crystal clear brook trickling away past flowing weeping willows while fuzzy dandelions leisurely float upwards into the ocean blue sky...sigh
FUCK BIEBER.
