  • This is a huge load of pretentious crap. A sketch of a photo doesn't make him an important artist. The anointing of the intelligentsia and their rationalization is what makes him an "important" artist. The art world has crawled up their own bung hole and become fascinated with the shit they discover.

  • This is without any doubt the clear proof of how the artist elite circle is so full of itself. Tuymans is a very influential artist in the circle because... I honestly don't know why. To be honest, this guy just made a monkey porn graffiti... I don't know why these people feel so innovative, when for a long time many great anonymous artists have made this point very clear in the streets, but with the rush of doing their art with the pressure of being caught by the police.

  • Such a dull artist. Yawn.

  • Great Art is not Made by COPYING PHOTOS. Tuyman should have mounted a Photo of the Monkey..it would have got attention. To make people SEE again...a real ARTIST must do the UNKNOWN....not copy the KNOWN.

  • people wouldn't stop for a second glance because they are not familiar with art. if it were a giant Left 4 Dead poster or GTA advertisement, even if I'm on a rush, I would spend that 1or 2 seconds to take a look, appreciate it, and move on.

  • the good thing is that he made a painting on the street. the bad thing is he had to hide as he did it. counting people who walk by without stopping as uninterested is not fair or accurate. ever hear of peripheral vision? people cannot be expected to react to a painting on the street the same way those who choose to enter a gallery with the intention of seeing art. on the street, you take it in as you pass, it is apart of your environment, like the cracks in the sidewalk.

  • the opererational deffinations of this experiment are not clearly made. for example did they count people in cars passing by? therefore i have to question the valitidy of this hole experiment highly. these result are easily manipulated to convay any measage desariable because the bases of judgement is not clear.

  • multiple things bug me about this: 1)Art majors and critics. I myself am an art major but not the self righteous attitude most have about their knowledge on art, if you need to explain your art, you're doing it wrong. 2)The experiment proves nothing and is flawed. how many people would stop and watch TV in a display window? Id bet it would be close to the same results. 3)Artists who make art intended for other artists, and are upset when the general public doesn't pay attention or "get it".

  • SCAFF-folding, not sca-FOL-ding.

Yeah, I'm a prig. What of it?

  • it would help to have a variety of locations and other works as a control. as an artist I'm always skeptical of the consensus in the art world. The woman was right about context. Graffiti to me has equal or even greater value and would get much more attention. What does that mean? I don't know.

  • I logged on to YouTube to post a similar comment to yours, "ivandnav," but you beat me to it.

I can only add that it was great that Luc Tuymans participated in the experiment.

  • what a great idea! love the art and the sigur ros was a nice touch!

  • FYI, the first track is by Mogwai.

  • Such a great painter!

  • load of bollocks

  • good job chemist

  • Not shocked at all that barely any people were interested. This painting is bland and boring, especially in contrast with the wall. The context is all wrong. The artist should have studied the setting and created an adequate piece. But take for example Banksy's work: they stand out. He creates his stuff with thought.... black and white bold lines and BRIGHT SIMPLE COLOURS.

The "elite" studio artists should get out more and open their eyes.

  • The grafitti artists make this experiment all the time using the wall as support for their art and its not unsual that commun people doesn't give much attention. These people are kinda "infected" by the "daily routine house-work disease" lol heh! thats funny and sad at the same time... But artists must keep provoking, and trying to stimulate the blind censes of humanity

  • lulz that artist got owned

  • Perhaps the narration @ 6:45 should read, "Hopefully, these numbers will wake the contemporary art world up. Can experiments like this one, help the art elite to take more interest in the world."

  • Modern art is rubbish. People ignored Tuymans' work because it was utterly uninteresting. Why must artists are their sycophants be so pompous narcissists?

  • Even if it was 2856 non-viewers and 1 viewer. i think that work would still have quite the differance in that 1 persons life and would make the work well.... Perfect. For the blanket effect would get more and more thought and more and more would come from just some random imagery.

  • I guess the majority of people don't feel moved by a picture of "monkeys copulating as humans" on the other hand a good bansky (if you haven't seen on do a google images search on it) does speak to the regular person in a non convoluted yet very smart way.

  • Lame and masturbatory

  • most people would probably glance quickly, think 'i can do this', and walk off.

not only context, but i think size has a great deal to do with it, also the amount of works displayed.

either way, if you have a group of people setting anything up in a public area, people will stop to gawk regardless.

  • The whole thing about apreciating art is *context!* It's far easier to enjoy a painting if you're in a special building with with no noise and a calm atmosphere rather than in a noisy street with other things on your mind

  • iawtc somewhat. there are certain types of music i enjoy while looking at art. sometimes when i paint, i listen to music, and if i finish, a song will come on that will make the piece intense.

  • I want to play Simcity societies now

  • I'm gonna say the end song is Saeglopur by Sigur Ros. Great song.

  • its sigur ros,, but actually 'se lest'

  • Art is largely a religion built around money for people with a lot of it.

This is a just a video of some dumb priests.

  • i pity you. as a typical "starving artist" i paint not for money or fame, i paint for me. to show no appreciation for art as you have can only be a sad life in my opinion. art is about emotion and beauty and has nothing to do with money. those that see art as a commodity are not artists nor are they lovers of art whether they say they are or not.

  • You're an idiot.

That is a scientific fact I have uncovered through looking at your MySpace page.

  • like i would take any critique from you as being anything worthy...

  • I know, you're much too preoccupied with being an idiot.

  • ...and here we have a fine example of a pot calling a kettle black ;) lmao!!!

  • This is not a fine example at all! If it even was an example of a pot calling a kettle black it would be a *very blurry* example!

Once again you expose your advanced stage of idiocy.

  • quite obviously you have no clue what you're talking about so i'll leave you be to your foolish ranting. have a nice life friend ;)

  • I SAID GOOD DAY to you, SIR!!

  • society is by and large a religion built around money.

  • now THAT i can agree with ;)

  • I've been looking for the song too. I was sure I knew it but I just couldn't remember where I heard it...anyways, it's auto rock from mogwai

  • I don't know the exact title of the song but the artists are Sigur Ros, from Iceland I think.

  • I LOVE the music in this, does anyone know what's it called?
