Fantastic speech. It's very honourable to be honest like that in a synagogue yet to still see the good that can come out of following religion, even if one does not believe everything that is part of it.
Basically the main reason why I don't dislike Judaism as much as the rest of the religions. The fact that the people in the room accepted his words and he didn't have any fear of expressing his doubts to a room full of the 'faithful' is really telling. That is a remarkable faith community. This young man is allowed to express thoughts, emotions, and his honest questioning.
What I hear is a young person saying they want a relationship with God, not a religious & blind adherance to rules, rituals or set of behaviours. He is saying that he truly wants to see the meaning in his culture/faith. No ridicule or mocking, just the desire to truly know who God is. It takes true faith, wisdom & maturity from the adults to let him discover for himself.
It is so sad that a competent Rabbi did not address these ideas and questions. If you really want answers, come to Jerusalem and visit Aish haTorah. We were at this level in Chicago until we met Rabbi Moshe Katz and Rabbi Donni Deutsch from the Chicago Torah Network. I don't know where you live, but chances are you can find someone to enlighten you and answer your questions. If there was nothing more there than what you've read, do you really think Judaism would still be alive today?

Basically the main reason why I don't dislike Judaism as much as the rest of the religions. The fact that the people in the room accepted his words and he didn't have any fear of expressing his doubts to a room full of the 'faithful' is really telling. I cannot imagine something like this getting more than two sentences in at a protestant church without him being shouted down and cast out as the devil.
Good for your Son for his views, and great for your community at their acceptance.

Great Bar Mitzvah speech. I couldn't have done better if I was given 1000 second chances. This kid spoke what was on my mind when I was Bar Mitzvah age and still rings just as true to me as an adult. The scientific community works with theories; they work with physics and God is not physical. They don't have a logical explanation on how we got here but I do. That is a remarkable faith community. This young man is allowed to express thoughts, emotions, and his honest questioning.
What I hear is a young person saying they want a relationship with God, not a religious & blind adherance to rules, rituals or set of behaviours. He is saying that he truly wants to see the meaning in his culture/faith. No ridicule or mocking, just the desire to truly know who God is. It takes true faith, wisdom & maturity from the adults to let him discover for himself.

It is so sad that a competent Rabbi did not address these ideas and questions. If you really want answers, come to Jerusalem and visit Aish haTorah. We were at this level in Chicago until we met Rabbi Moshe Katz and Rabbi Donni Deutsch from the Chicago Torah Network. I don't know where you live, but chances are you can find someone to enlighten you and answer your questions. If there was nothing more there than what you've read, do you really think Judaism would still be alive today?
