I bought a bootleg chinese YMO tape of this back in the dark ages, and it's been a good companion. Btw, Sakamoto Ryuichi FLOORED me when i heard him compose beyond this. he's a big hero of mine. He's so cute as a drummer, scary as an actor (he plays villains sort of, and very well), but for music, he is a shining japanese star. look into the rest of his stuff. he's a real treasure.

Whatta song. I didn't get into YMO until I'd been listening to the likes of post-Be Bop Bill Nelson and Midge Ure-era Ultravox for years, and immediately heard their mutual antecedent in YMO. Yuki's solo stuff is excellent, too. Some found his voice cold, but I think "Cue" is tremendously affecting. I really do. And this is a CRISP clip. Thanks for the spotless upload!

somehow, through all the synths, it reminds me of falling in love. indeed, my first love coincided with the first time i heard this, so i'm a little prejudice, but sakamoto in his garbled voice soothes and is very optimistic. very bizarre, but absolutely lovely.

Well, more recently HASYMO did a live performance of this with ryuichi on drums again. Why they did this i have no idea. But it does make it more interesting considering sakamoto-san is normally on keyboards. Good also to see the more recent live version keeping ryuichi on drums as this original video did.

I have the same problem. I play bass, and my favorite bass player is Geddy Lee. But then alot of times hes also singing, playing quite melodic basslines, and playing bass pedals and string lines with his feet.

I read it in Chinese version. No idea for any other translations available by now. Anyway, the reason is what 'hagichannel' mentioned above. In addition, the context was the reason of competition between them : 'B-2 Unit' is something like 'Anti-YMO' stuffs and done by him alone, so Takahashi San and Haruomi San co-written "CUE" as revenge.

Anyway, happy that they cooperate again for HASYMO. Reconcilation makes this song more meaningful.

@ymo1965 It said that "CUE" was made by Yukihiro Takahashi & Haruomi Hosono, and Ryuichi Sakamoto didn't take part in. So, Ryuichi didn't have any playing part on "CUE", he plays drums on the song.

On Wikipedia it states (without citation) that Sakamoto was often absent from the "BGM" recording sessions. I read somewhere else that for this particular song, Hosono and Takahashi had finished it before Sakamoto could add anything to it (I think this might have come from a Sakamoto interview actually), and resulted in him playing drums whenever this song was played live (as seen in the Winter live '81 tour and in more recent performances.)

Nonetheless, excellent track!

This seemed to be the beginning of a trend where Yukihiro seemed to prefer not to play drums while singing. Sakamoto played drums for Cue during their Winter Live '81 tour, and David Palmer (from ABC) played drums on songs where Yukihiro has significant vocals during their 1983 tour.

It seemed to become a tradition for Ryuichi specifically to play drums for this song, as noted by ymo1965. I guess this is why they didn't play it in their 1983 tour as they had those silly elevating platforms
