  • He wears a Rephlex hoodie!

  • I must have watched this over a 1000 times, it never gets boring. Squarepusher is awesome, his brother too!

  • whoa...what he did with the reel to reel was awesome...so thats how they morph their BPM rate...i've been trying to figure that one out for a bit now...

  • does anyone know the model of that mixing board

  • @jimclashair looks like a soundcraft spirit folio

  • @michal23pl yeah that sounds about right. he just changed the faders. nice eye man. thanks

  • maybe squarepusher should learn drums...

  • he's a sick bassist

  • fuck it's too bad people cant appreciate this stuff

  • the first album he pulls out ("early 70s electronic") is white noise's "an electric storm"............ gotta love that!

  • 1:36 AFX logo :D

  • i think his definition of drum n bass should be the wikipedia entry

  • squarepusher niets mis mee zou het zo weer horen

  • i cannot imagine making tunes like that with tape!

  • @TheHandOfGovernment Its called Tundra from Feed Me Weird Things

  • 1:37 Squarepusher's got an Aphex sticker on his TB-303

  • Whoever produced this video deserves an award for including that particular Buddy Rich clip. Back it up and listen to a few times, the musical, and even stylistic parallels are uncanny. Two musical geniuses, two vastly different "genres."

Thanks for posting this, it is a gem.

  • fecking sound that was.... thanks for posting

  • 3:17 <----aphex twin sticker JEAH

  • Can somebody tell me what track he's mixing during most of the video.

  • What's the first tune??

  • Comment removed

  • @Dempentseka Err sorry I meant Tundra.

  • that must've been expensive........

  • Whats the song around the 5 min mark? not really familiar with DnB.

  • @djkaseone its squarepusher - Theme From Ernest Borgnine - from feed me wierd things

    watch?v=2CHV44WpKw4

    classic squarepusher.

just a note, even though many of his tracks are the usual jungle breaks, i dont think i would consider squarepusher as DNB, but more IDM(as its meening in mid 90s) or drill n bass, melodic advanced hyper acid jungle, braindance, something something.

many would propperly disagree. but regular drum n bass is NOTHING like squarepusher.

    his unique

  • @noianiz Thanks Man Appreciate It!

  • @noianiz

I agree with you, he makes like IDM or drill'n'bass, but then sometimes you hear things like "my sound" from the music is rotted one note album. Then it's really hard to put a genre on him, Squarepusher is just Squarepusher.

  • damn! 8 track tape deck! cool stuff!!

  • hahahaha this tom is so amazing! what we hardly are able to do with highend computer power and best of best highend software and expansive synthesizers this crazy funny tom just does in a minute from reel to reel hahahahahaa and it sounds fucking much more amazing like the mixing others work weeks or months on it hahaahah i bet he is a genius!

  • I really know what he's going thru at 5:30

  • Big Chill '96!

  • Brilliant artist... I like the Aphex Twin sticker on the Ibanez :)

  • oh fuck... no subtitles :D

  • I'm gob smacked he did all that older shit analogue styles.

Also I'd love to hang out with this dude and listen to records. How good would that shit be.

  • Comment removed

  • Damn Squarepusher looked pretty grubby back then. I wonder if he still plays an Ibanez lol

  • drum n bass is like a stupid phrase....

  • i dream of doing what he does all the time

  • What synth is used in Ernest?

  • @andy92811 Roland MC-202

  • and there's one on his bass 3:19

  • 1:38 methinks he might be somebody's fan lol

  • it's so ironic & funny how he was worried about things like, "is there time for a sound check" but it didn't matter because he's so talented, he didn't know it was going to sound great no matter what

  • aaaaaaaaah... toen Drum N Bass nog goed was...

  • The man is a legend in my music life

    Greets from FRYSLAN (Holland)

  • He's like the Thom Yorke of dnb haha

  • whats the name of the track he starts breaking down on the mixer at 2:10?

  • This sync in this vid is so OFF

  • I started recording Music that way!

U can´t compare this to nowadays work usin DAW´s.....

  • LOL! the face he makes @ 2:56 is incredible

  • "drun n bass is just like a stupid phrase, or something like that"

    love it..

  • Theme From Ernest Bornine.

It's on Feed Me Weird Things

  • thank you

  • @zeker111 shit i know that is fresh

  • Drum & Bass spawned from Hardcore in the UK around 1992, Hardcore was a mix of all styles, techno, house, electro, etc etc etc. the earliset form of Drum & Bass was Jungle Techno, this was techno styled basslines and bass with hectic drum patterns over top,the UK hardcore scene then split into 2 factions (Happy Hardcore) piano driven hardcore & Drum & Bass,

  • I had a look but that korg electribe mx dont seem like it plays the 1995 style drum n bass so thats no use

  • where can you get that machine that plays the drum n bass music?

  • internet ?!

just search for korg electribe mx on youtube

  • ok thanks

  • Disappeared? LOL!

His 13th album has been relased and i saw him 5 days ago at sziget festival (the biggest 1 in europe)

  • That Synth he has there is the SH-101. I've just bought the Roland SH-201 & it is alot of fun screwing around with all the knobs & Sliders as he says! He also has a copy of 'White Noise' - an album produced by Delia Derbyshire: Who was the Woman who Pioneered the Dr Who Theme.

I'd Recommend everyone to listen to a track from this Album called 'Love Without Sound', it's 30years ahead of it's time. It's availible to watch on You Tube of Couse. Love Without Sound by Delia Derbyshire.

  • yeah, i've noticed the White Noise LP too. Great vinyl collection, he has.

  • 2:16 what's the track tune??thanks :)

  • Comment removed

  • I think this is E8 Boogie on Hard Normal Daddy.

  • Comment removed

  • "drum 'n bass not established at this point"...not true

  • Yeah, dnb started in the 80's or so.

  • No, it was later: early 90's:

    7:30

  • Yeah I know. I was going to correct myself by saying 'late' 80's early 90's but fuck it. (:

  • No problem

  • the actual year it started was 1992

  • How can anybody know when it started exactly?

  • it was a tuesday, 4.26pm 28.436 seconds. exactly

  • I agree

  • @DavidAlshNZ Holy shiiiiit right now it's 4:26 am on a tuesday! so close....so high right now

  • who squarepusher? he's doing fine and has a much bigger home studio these days. Seen him live 3 months ago and it was sold out.

  • THNX FOR THE UPLOAD MAN BIG UPS!! :P

  • I can't find the name of the beginning music. What is the name of that stringed Squarepusher music?

  • Tundra

  • Thank you very much, you seems really nice and hot

  • rofl

  • get "feed me weird things" circa 1996. one of my favorite albums. i never get tired of it.

  • Word.

  • I can't fucking believe he did this without computers... reel-to-reel tape, are you kidding me? fuck!!!

  • @ryanx27 Meh - it's just a 4-track. No big deal. Anyone over 30 has multi-tracked on tape - it's not as daunting as you think.

In no way do I mean to take away from Squarepusher - he's obviously a genius and I'm a fan or I wouldn't be here, but the tape is about the least impressive thing about this vid.

  • @ryanx27 and he STILLL doesent use computer sequencers, all he uses them for is some reaktor programs that he WROTE HIMSELF, the man is a genius

  • @ryanx27 Naah he hid his gear to keep his secrets. No keyboards? no effects unit? naah

  • @Roelandvinken I see a keyboard in the video :D

  • @dudesons441 thats a roland 101, its got no midi!

  • @Roelandvinken :O. Pardon me and my lack of knowledge of midi controllers :P

  • @Roelandvinken The secrets right there mate. Its the Akai sampler. Considering the age of the vid, I wouldn't be surprised if theres an Atari-ST running cubase around somewhere, but a lot of these guys just used a step-sequencer with an akai sampler. There was also a lot of cats fucking around with mod trackers at the time, but squarepusher appears to have been a traditional sampler user. I'm astonished by the reel to reel stuff though.

  • @ryanx27 I thought the same thing when I found that out. He used a beat box I believe to sequence his work, which is amazing.

  • @ryanx27 lol

  • put a banana in your ear

  • put a ripe banana right into your favorite ear

  • loool yes

  • Was that Birdland?

  • Damn straight.

  • Really cool to see give props to Buddy Rich for his drumming. Awesome drummer - Tom is amazing. I don't think we will see anyone with his caliber of talent for quite some time.

  • sorry for typing dutch so i give a english lost.
