I watched this fight over and over and over.. I didn't see marquez winning it.. My advice to marquez and his followers; U need to attack, be aggressive and dictate the fight. U are trying to get the belt from a champion but that's not what happened. Pacquiao is the champion and he was d aggressor. He was the one dictating the fight.. at first watching the fight live, I really thought marquez won the fight coz you can see clearly his counter punches connected to pac. but after seing the HBO replay in slow motion I changed my mind pac really won the fight fair and square. you can see it clearly that most of JMM punches did not connect, some connected to pac's arms and elbows. while pac landed more combination on Jmm's face. we can see on JMM's swollen Face post fight

I know that when a south paw and a conventional stances meet that foot stepping would occur. I watched the fight three times now and noticed that the foot stepping by JMM was in my opinion was too excessive. I felt he was doing it purposely. What do you think?

round 5 was the best for marquez, he landed good shots. besides that, eh, it was pretty much 2-4 clean shots between pac peppering marquez's face per round. thats why his faced looked like he overdosed on botox at the end of the fight.
I watched this on TV and I thought Marquez won as well by a point or 2.
HOWEVER, when i rewatched this fight with sound *OFF*, amazingly I can understand how the judge scored it for Pacquiao. I came up with 2 scores:
1. Pac wins by 1
2. Pacwins by 4
In other words I change my opinion and I believe Pacquio won. It was close but he won.
Also I felt Pacquiao was a *BETTER* boxer than before and has definately improved. Conclusions of decline are way premature. I'm actually impressed by Pac!

Our initial viewing is biased by our expectations before fight, that Pac would just walk over Marquez and over power him. So as a result Pac performance looks so "bad" to even say he lost. Couple that with Marquez putting on a hell of a performance better than any one expected... then first viewing it looks like clear Marquez win. Remove the bias then you will see. Its a Pac win.

Spot on man, Pac fought and beat him in JMM's own style of fighting. As well as Marquez countered Pac, if you watched it very closely, JMM got tagged by Pac's own right hand counters. Pac definitely improved as a boxer.

Counter punching is a fundamental part of boxing, u can win a fight backing up or moving away the entire time. If u think only aggressors should win fights u must think Ali (who danced around the ring and created the rope-a-dope) was a loser. Marquez chose to fight going backwards and did it well.

If you're the challenger who is making a statement that you won the previous fight, you have to proove yourself, and be more aggressive than that. Pacquiao should be given agression points if he uses it effectively. However, Marquez nullified Pac left hook & he set the pace of the fight. So the judges shouldn't give Pac points for that. The fight in its totallity catered to Marquez style. This is Boxing, the agressor shouldn't get points for simply being agressive unless he uses it effectively. The fight wasn't a brawling fest, so the judges were wrong in that regard or anybody who says otherwise.
In close figths like these, the guy who's style dictated the fight & waas able to nullify their opponents offense or impose their will offensely should be the victor. Marquez should of won, because the fights catered to Marquez counter-punch style. They can't simply give Paac the decision because he's the agressor. Haad he used it effectively then yes, but that wasn't the case. Maarquez kept Pac at bay, & nullified his left aswell. Fight should go to Marquez.

very good analysis. i was actually a victim of my own expectations. after the fight, at first i thought marquez won on a close decision but when i watched it again and set aside my expectations, i was convinced pacquiao clearly won. marquez had his chances, on the later rounds, he went to being conservative. should he been that aggressive enough to win round 12, it should have been a draw.

In round 4 at first I gave Pacquiao the win but after seeing the slow motion after the round I changed it in favor of Marquez. The slow mo replay does make the scorer take a second look about the score. sometimes it can be biased. That's why judges dont have the luxury of looking at the replay.

Even as a Manny Pacquiao fan, i think Marquez did well. But i do still believe Pacquiao edged out a win. The real twist is that so many ppl expected Pacquiao to knock him out, so ppl were disappointed bc it wasn't the spectacular win they've come to expect from Pacquiao.
Pacquiao had just a 117-100 edge in power shots landed , while Marquez landed the cleaner shots. Pac was busier, averaging 49 punches thrown per round to 36 per round for Marquez.
Pacquiao Clearly won this I am an amateur boxer.Styles make fights these two will have a similar fight no matter how many times they fight. BUT Every boxer knows in order to take the title for from the champ you need to beat the champ. Manny Pressed the fight and actually made it a fight. not to mention that he landed nearly more punches and power punches. The fight was close JMM is a tremendous fighter with great technique but still fell a little short in the end.
Was the pace of the fight as fast as Pacquiao would have liked it? No.
Did Pacquiao land his combinations? No.
Was Pacquiao able to hit Marquez with straight left hands? No.
Did Marquez control the pace of the the fight? Yes.
Was Marquez able to make Pacquiao miss? Yes.
Did Marquez counterpunch effectively? Yes.
Pacquiao clearly couldn't do what he wanted to do while Marquez did everything he wanted to do. How could possibly give Marquez less than 6 rounds when he is dictating the fight.

The Majority of boxing experts and fans who aren't Filipino either gave the fight to Marquez or a called it a Draw, but none of them claimed Pacquiao won decisively.
So experts think its a draw, let me ask you this do judges usually give a draw on fights like this? I think not, they usually favor the champ not the challenger....

A Judge is suppose to be objective and fair in how they score a fight. A Judge should have no bias, if they do they're corrupt.
@brennaregan Whenever Southpaws (left-handed boxers: Pacquiao) fight Orthodox fighters (right-handed boxers: Marquez) accidental headbutts and feet tangling are very common. This is well known in the boxing world.

Many believe that Pacquiao lost this fight, including Al Bernstein and Dan Rafael. They say that Pacquiao didn't look like the same fighter, didn't have his rhythm, or was off balanced. What they should do is re-examine the fight, and watch Marquez's foot. Marquez doesn't even try to remove his foot ; instead, he takes advantage of Manny's trapped foot and throws a couple of punches. This foot trapping by Marquez should explain why Manny looked off balanced , or out of rhythm.

First time i saw it i was like every1 else, thought marquez got robbed
watched it a second time without the crowd screaming after pretty much every throw marquez threw hit or miss, and no ring announcers. It made a difference. i had it 115-113 for pac.
round 5 was the best for marquez, he landed good shots. besides that, eh, it was pretty much 2-4 clean shots between pac peppering marquez's face per round. thats why his faced looked like he overdosed on botox at the end of the fight.

I watched this on TV and I thought Marquez won as well by a point or 2.
HOWEVER, when i rewatched this fight with sound *OFF*, amazingly I can understand how the judge scored it for Pacquiao. I came up with 2 scores:
1. Pac wins by 1
2. Pacwins by 4
In other words I change my opinion and I believe Pacquio won. It was close but he won.
Also I felt Pacquiao was a *BETTER* boxer than before and has definately improved. Conclusions of decline are way premature. I'm actually impressed by Pac!

Our initial viewing is biased by our expectations before fight, that Pac would just walk over Marquez and over power him. So as a result Pac performance looks so "bad" to even say he lost. For all of u Pacman fans who think Marquez deserved to lose because he wasn't the aggressor, go watch some classic footage Muhammad Ali and see if he was the aggressor in his fights.
Counter punching is a fundamental part of boxing, u can win a fight backing up or moving away the entire time. If u think only aggressors should win fights u must think Ali (who danced around the ring and created the rope-a-dope) was a loser. Marquez chose to fight going backwards and did it well.

ALI and Marquez style is not the right way to compare and judge who won the fight. Marquez was the challenger, and Pacman is the champion. Even though it was a close fight the challenger didn't make any risk to attack and win by convincingly to impress the judges- while Pacman was the more aggressive fighter throughout the fight.

I enjoy all your fight breakdowns! The 1st time I saw this fight, I really did believe that JMM won just on having the more explosive hits. It was definitely a chess match and upon a 2nd review, I believe Pacquiao won the fight, but barely by 2 rounds. Manny was the busier fighter, still I NEVER believed JMM would be a pushover. He's too technically sound as a counter-puncher/boxer. Pacquiao fought a smart/cautious fight. Both fighters are BEASTS! Good fight! Renegade Rousey = Awesome! =] - JD

If you're the challenger who is making a statement that you won the previous fight, you have to proove yourself, and be more aggressive than that. Pacquiao should be given agression points if he uses it effectively. However, Marquez nullified Pac left hook & he set the pace of the fight. So the judges shouldn't give Pac points for that. The fight in its totallity catered to Marquez style. This is Boxing, the agressor shouldn't get points for simply being agressive unless he uses it effectively. The fight wasn't a brawling fest, so the judges were wrong in that regard or anybody who says otherwise.

In close figths like these, the guy who's style dictated the fight & waas able to nullify their opponents offense or impose their will offensely should be the victor. Marquez should of won, because the fights catered to Marquez counter-punch style. They can't simply give Paac the decision because he's the agressor. Haad he used it effectively then yes, but that wasn't the case. Maarquez kept Pac at bay, & nullified his left aswell. Fight should go to Marquez.

@rerousey Boxers have styles. Marquez style is to counter thats where his skill is. Paquiao is aggressive by style but this shows that Paquiao can not overmatch Marquez. He has beat bigger guys but this smaller guy handled him with pure skill and even tho Paquiao was the Champion coming to the fight but these guys have previous fights that have been close so it was more about who can beat who. Marquez's gameplan cost him dearly. Him and his corner should have known better. To be the challenger and to have a gameplan of just backing off and just waiting to counter-punch is a misguided plan. Especially in this kind of a fight. Marquez is a victim of his own doings.
This is not Olympic amateur boxing, this is Professional boxing.
It was razor thin close fight I would admit, but at the end of day if its an even fight, the determining factor is who was the aggressor.

very good analysis. i was actually a victim of my own expectations. after the fight, at first i thought marquez won on a close decision but when i watched it again and set aside my expectations, i was convinced pacquiao clearly won. marquez had his chances, on the later rounds, he went to being conservative. should he been that aggressive enough to win round 12, it should have been a draw.

I think you guys have a forget what boxing is about, but its the society we live in today. they want to see agression, blood and guts. Marquez doesn't believe he's a challenger for one. If he was aggressive it wouldn't have been his style. EFFECTIVELY, Marquez won the fight on boxing. Making the guy miss, landing clean effective punches, using great footwork to avoid punches. In that fight I would have rather been Marquez by far.

in this 3rd fight pacquiao clearly didnt do as well in the previous two fights....
and jmm clearly did better than he did in the previous two fights.

U should not have waited Manny to come in. U did not carry the fight. U were not the agressor.U were swinging badly from 9 to 12 rounds. Your corner made U to believe that you were leading, while in fact you were only credited with 10 points each for 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th rounds. Try to review the video and try to mute the video. 116-112 for Manny Pacquiao is a convincing score. In "Boxing"judges tend to favor the fighter who controls and proposes the fight, not the one who is simply counter punching. If you are going to counter punch then dont get hit, that's how mayweather always does it. Pacquiao threw and landed more punches, how can you not notice that marquez's face took more punishment after the fight.

My score cards
Pacquiao rounds: 1,3,6,8,9,10,11,12= 116
Marquez rounds: 2,4,5,7= 112
In round 4 at first I gave Pacquiao the win but after seeing the slow motion after the round I changed it in favor of Marquez. The slow mo replay does make the scorer take a second look about the score. sometimes it can be biased. That's why judges dont have the luxury of looking at the replay.

Pacquiao had just a 117-100 edge in power shots landed , while Marquez landed the cleaner shots. Pac was busier, averaging 49 punches thrown per round to 36 per round for Marquez.

Pacquiao Clearly won this I am an amateur boxer.Styles make fights these two will have a similar fight no matter how many times they fight. BUT Every boxer knows in order to take the title for from the champ you need to beat the champ. Manny Pressed the fight and actually made it a fight. not to mention that he landed nearly more punches and power punches. The fight was close JMM is a tremendous fighter with great technique but still fell a little short in the end.

Was Pacquiao able to hit Marquez with straight left hands? No.
Did Marquez control the pace of the the fight? Yes.

@br00ms- I didn't know judges score fights by looking at a boxers face, I always though it had something to do with rounds. It would be misleading since some people bruise easier than others. The Majority of boxing experts and fans who aren't Filipino either gave the fight to Marquez or a called it a Draw, but none of them claimed Pacquiao won decisively.

@promilemac Actually one judge, Robert Hoyle, scored the fight 114-114, which is a draw. Judges score fights round by round so draws can happen unintentionally in any fight. A Judge is suppose to be objective and fair in how they score a fight. A Judge should have no bias, if they do they're corrupt.

@brennaregan Whenever Southpaws (left-handed boxers: Pacquiao) fight Orthodox fighters (right-handed boxers: Marquez) accidental headbutts and feet tangling are very common. This is well known in the boxing world.
All these arguments from Pacquiao fans do nothing but prove that they are mostly just casual fans who know little about boxing.
