i had seen almost all the screening but no other seems to me so good, so well putted on the screen following the book. i love this movie and i love toby for his interpretation. A great movie and great actors.
I wonder if the entire story telling is an attempt to corrupt our little Jane. Jane is obviously unaccustomed to hearing about "dark intoxicating hours" and blushes more and more. And then Rochester seems to fall into his own trap: the way he looks at Jane at 2:44-2:48 suggests that he finally sees her as not only an intelligent woman but also an attractive one.
Actually possessing wealth doesn't seem to ever be worth it. Must be why girls dream of being princesses not queens. I don't know what boys aspire to in that way. Knights? Certainly more appealing than being a king.
It's the night before my English exam. I am watching this and have just underlined a passage in the book:
"And was Mr Rochester now ugly in my eyes? No, reader: gratitude, and many associations, all pleasurable and genial, made his face the object I best liked to see: his presence in a room was more cheering than the brightest fire. Yet I had not forgotten his faults; indeed, I could not, for he had brought them frequently before me."
Then I look at the screen at 7:32 and I'm like "HOLY SHIT!"
Is she kinda blushing in this scene? Or at least did they make her like so. I feel as though she was pale when he started speaking to her and by the time his story ends, she is red :) might be the cold of the day though ;)
I fully agree he has the sexiest voice ever I always said the British have it. And his eyes who could not love him, they make me go all funny in the knees.
I was watching the 1996 version and read many comments of how this one was the best so I had to watch it and see and yes, I love this one a lot so far. Mr. Rochester is so sexy and more romantic :o)
you have to admit, compared to most girls *cough, me* who would have locked themselves in their room and hope for the best, she just marches striaght out there.
This is great casting!! She's "plain" (not supermodely but not ugly) and he's definately not "classicly" handsome but you kinda get used to him as you get to know him... I think every other rendition I've seen has it reversed, lol!!
@chemical93girl Rochester is described as having too short legs and I think more than once as monstrous, though humorously, I supposse. But unless you're Mike Leigh, it's very difficult to make a film with truly plain actors. It's our fault, too... I can't say that I mind Ruth Wilson, either... Mia Wasikowska may be a good choice for the 2011 version, as she's not ugly but less than blindingly beautiful.
OK. I'm doing some quick math here. Rochester married Bertha Mason and got her dowry of 30 thousand pounds. Then all the male relatives in his family died and he inherited the entire family fortune on top of that. If I'm correct, he should have been, at the time he spoke to Jane, worth way more than 20 thousand pounds, even if he spent down some of the Mason money.
Not only is he smokin', but he's holding out on her!
@LatteCafe82 Keep in mind the reason he married Bertha in the first place. His father and brother spent most of the fortune, and were near bankruptcy.
@TheRentFan ??? No, do you confuse Edward R. with John Reed??? Edward's father wanted to leave everything to his older brother, but wished Edward to have the same status without HIM giving the money, so he arranged this, as Mr Mason was a rich business associate of his.
I read the book... and this adaptation is too much verbiage. The 1996 movie is better (not perfect but better). But thanks Goldenivy! For alot of people it's look just perfetc. :)
@emeliejolie87 I did not read the book but seen both versions...love better this one. The 96's was too much of a jane, almost not human. she showed no emotions whatsoever. and then, paff! she's il love (declared without even changing her face expression)

this is kinda like beauty and the beast if you think about it except its switched a bit jane is the beauty on the inside and mr rochester is the beast on the inside :o
I love this part. The dreamy atmosphere created as Rochester talks about Celine, and the way Jane looks at him. Her ironic "No, sir" when he says that Jane doesn't know how to love. And then, later, when she sees him outside her bedroom window - the change of music and the look Jane gives herself in the mirror. Just beautiful.

@watusernameshudiuse Adele didn't grow up in England she was brought up in France and Rochester brought her to England a few months before Jane arrived at Thorn-field. He says this when he is telling Jane about his experience with Celine.
They failed to mention here that in the book, Rochester said that though he was jealous at first, all his feelings for Celine (incldg. respect) died when he saw what kind of man she had cheated him with.:D
Hilarious, when Rochester is tellng Jane she doesn't know about love, there is a sad sappy song in the background, as soon as Jane asks is he still in love with Celine, the music stops, it's like back to reality hahaha lol
As regards Adele's paternity: "...unluckily the Varens, six months before had given me ... Adele, who she affirmed was my daughter; and perhaps she may be, though I see no proofs of ... paternity written in her countenance ... Some years after I had broken with the mother, she abandoned her child and ran away to Italy ... I am not her father, but hearing that she was quite destitute I ... took the poor thing out of ... Paris and transplanted it here ..." The entire passage is in Ch15.
Impressed that this version accents his love of her just listening to him. Pre-Fuede(sp)! It was common for the young, rich men to do the "tour." It was a coming of age thing for English young men. Their fathers gave them money after graduating from college and they went to Europe and sowed their wild oats. Thought they were big men when in reality the actresses, etc. took advantage of them feeding their egos to get $. Being young R would have told his first love how much he was worth.
This version takes far too many liberties with the original text. Mr. Rochester's torment is quite clear in the book and in the 1983 adaptation. I don't need visual metaphors to understand what is going on, his words convey it sufficiently. In fact, Toby Stephens' telling of his "grand passion" with Celine Varens is quite milquetoast compared with the dialogue in the book, not to mention Timothy Dalton's version of the same story, which is filled with sarcasm & self-loathing, as it should be.
@ruairaidh Yes. I agree. One impressive thing about R is that he pretty much knows that Adale isn't his daughter but on the off chance she is, he takes her in and he takes a risk telling Jane that Adale is a bastard. Today that is a cussing word but at the time, even when I was a girl, that was the term for a child born out of marriage. Made it very difficult for the child to get ahead in life for anyone to know it. I don't agree that R deserves the self-loathing. He was lied to.
@Songsmirth I meant the telling should be filled with self-loathing and sarcasm because that is how the dialogue is written, not because he *ought* to feel those things. But one could argue that what happened with Celine Varens should not have surprised him.
@ruairaidh You're right. He was young and in love for the first time. Had he been older, he could have read women like that but he had no teacher. Certainly not his father. They really had to learn life's lessons for themselves didn't they? Thanks for the responce. :) Happy new year. :)
I love it how Rochester confesses his past to Jane, opening his wounds in front of her patient listening eyes, and insistently asking for her approval about the way he treated Adele, showing her that her opinion matters very much to him, wanting her to behave like they are equal, desiring that she fully expresses herself and her personality beyond that relation master:governess.
Ha, ha Jane's face when he says: "She wasn't as clearsighted as you are, Jane, you find me unattractive despite my wealth", that small smile and sincere childish look that Ruth Wilson pulls off excellently are trying to say: "I take it back, I do think you're handsome."
I believe that she falls for him after this conversation, you can see it when she watches him prowling around the garden and is very flushed and secretive while observing him.
@ruairaidh Do you remember how R wound up with her? I did read the book but get all these movies mixed up with it. Need to read it again! I also get the various situations mixed up in her books. Sometimes they seem so alike. Impressive for a woman that never married. To create these worlds in her head not having been raised in high society, where did she get her information? Adele was very lucky he took her considering what people would have thought of him. It must have been a scandel.
love it when Mr. Rochester is telling the story and askes: "Are you still with me Jane?" and she says: "I'm here, Sir." and one can still see him in the flashback and he starts smiling ... though he is hearing Celine returning ... kind of an anticipation ... very subtle though
Am I the only one who thinks that finds him so extremely dreamy at around 3:24 when he asks Jane if there are any similarities between him and Adele??? He has that slight smile / smirk that makes him the sexiest man ever!
So many people keep commenting on how Mr Rochester isn't suppose to be as handsome as Toby Stephens is. The fact is Toby Stephens in this fits the description of Mr. Rochester. You have to remember that the idea of what is "beautiful" changes quite a bit over the years. 400 years ago a curvaceous slightly heavy woman was considered the epitome of "beauty" now it's thin borderline eating disorder type women that are considered "beautiful". Tastes in men are also quite different now than then.
How brave can a person be?? I'd be frightened to dead just with the weird noises, I'd never get out of bed and open my door, not to talk about following some weird unknown footsteps along a dark and spooky corridor!! (and then, opening the door where they led.... NO FREAKING WAY!!!!)
Can someone plzzz tell me what's the name of da song played in the background from 0:12 - 1:20? It's also played through out the whole movie. Thanks :)
Its so sweet how he seems to somehow need jane's approval...

J: Do you still love her, sir?
R: Who?

love it when Mr. Rochester is telling the story and askes: "Are you still with me Jane?" and she says: "I'm here, Sir." and one can still see him in the flashback and he starts smiling ... though he is hearing Celine returning ... kind of an anticipation ... very subtle though

i really hate the background music. its terrible. n even though she and him were both supposed to be ugly as butt they should be better looking!

I always did think Jane probably viewed herself as less pretty than she actually was :) This actress' voice is so silky and caramelly - gorgeous!

I wish I lived in a world where "ugly" men looked like Toby Stephens ;)

Mr. Rochester: "Is there anything about me that remotely resembles Adele? Look at me carefully now."
Way to make her look you in the eyes Rochester, you sly thing you!

I think i drooled a little on 1:58 when he's telling her that she doesn't know about Love. I felt like i was back in a romance novel... ::SIGHS::

you know, i thought mr. rochester was supposed to be an ugly man. the actor they cast to play him is absolutely beautiful!!!

Am I the only one who thinks that finds him so extremely dreamy at around 3:24 when he asks Jane if there are any similarities between him and Adele??? He has that slight smile / smirk that makes him the sexiest man ever!

@Bluelily818 i TOTALLY agree!! 4:00-4:08.... those blue eyes *melts*

I love the water moving behind them. It's very hypnotic and abrupt at the same time- kind of like Mr. Rochester.

Thanks :)
