When I lived in Montgomery, Alabama, I heard these bugs in the summer time making a strange yet haunting noise in the trees. The best way can describe that sound is something like a RIIIIIIIIIIIII-URR-RIIIIIIIIIIIIII-URR-RIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-URR!
i know it's not a very good sound description but would you happen to know if that's a type of cicada?
I saw a few in Missouri this year after seeing them for the first time, ever. Me and my family were freaked out , they flew in the house lol. Nice to know they look scarier than they really are.
@Haleyvonneable You know what I use to capture bugs that get in the house? I use one of those clear tops to a CD/DVD spindle. You know when you get those stacks of 50 or 100 blank DVD-R or CD-R? I use that in one hand to put over the bug on the wall, than a sturdy piece of paper (or several papers for firmness) and carefully sliding it under trapping the bug inside so that I can remove the case from the wall and release the bug outside. I don't like squishing or spraying, because both are a mess
@xRandax94 Those are different, though. You are talking about the one year cycle Cicadas. The ones in this video are the seventeen year cycle. Very different.
Cool video. I thought about making one myself as the periodical cicadas have hit Georgia right now. I lol'ed when you said that it sounds like the noise is coming from over here then over there because I know exactly what you mean. I'm 27 years old and I can remember hearing them as a kid so it brings back memories. What an amazingly odd phenomenon and a very obscure insect.
I remember this year, It was crazy in the Pine Barrens, When we were biking in there one hit my friend in the cheek, And the blood from the Cicada was all over his cheek!
Cicadas must taste good because my dogs were eating them like crazy when they were in my neck of the woods...it was soo funny because the boy dog..you could hear them buzzing around in his mouth haha
@mrhenderson Hahahahahahaha...... That is HILARIOUS. I should tell my mother this story and record her reaction. She'll freak out because she HATES those things and gets so grossed out. LOL
@shanejensen yeah it was hilarious watching them eat cicadas..but the buzzing wings inside his mouth was the icing on the cake. My dogs eat everything from mice to woodchucks, but I personally think Cicadas are nasty looking, but those dogs sure ate a ton of them. I'd like to see the video of her reaction, but I think you've put your Mom through enough torment with the tunnel videos lol. Hope you have a good weekend Shane!
I LOVE when you said"That's right folks Shane Jensen does nature today!"Ha,ha!
That gives mean idea for DA! He-he!
Nature is amazing Cicadas are fasinating to me to come up after sleeping 17 years to make their mating call-I remember in 2008 outside on the patio they were pretty loud. You got some nice close up shots of them. GREAT job! Thanks for sharing:)
I love cicadas. Couldn't you have shown more cicadas and less you? Seriously, the whole video is just a guy talking to a camera while a spectacularly rare event is taking place somewhere off camera.
Nooooooo...... I'm on Long Island, New York. We have Pine Barrens here, too. And if I had a dollar every time someone mentioned that Jersey Devil......
Glad to see someone else in NY likes cicadas. I actually was in Newsday and did an article on the cicada. I drove all over LI to find them. I was 19 years old in 1991 and that was the first time I saw them.
Oh wow, cool. I remember an article in Newsday about them back in 1991. It was called "The Year of the Locusts", even though they aren't actually locusts, that was the title. But yeah, it was quite an experience.
I didn't know they came up every 17 years, no wonder, I haven't seen those suckers in a long time! But every 17 years seems a bit too long, i thought i heard these insects sing every summer.
They have a very short time after the come up out of the ground. I say only keep them for an hour or so and then let them go and have their time in the sun. I suggest NOT keeping them longer than an hour let alone two days and especially NOT two weeks. That's most of their time in the world.
Amazing. We don't have anything like that here in the UK, at least not that I know of. Thanks for the insight Shane. It looked hot over there today, what are you getting at the moment?
Big bugs! Shane, do you folks have those irritating 'deer flies' there? These bugs bug me to death, yet won't touch my wife when we walk outside... And they sting you hard... Grrr!
Shane, that's the best video I've seen on youtube for quite awhile. I've never heard of those insects but they look like something out of a movie (like evolution or something).
Those bugs came back out in 2004.. I remeber they were out during our 12th grade graduation party outside and were flying over everyone. You look cool with that beard coming on. Its give your a new style.
That's cool, well, after the next few weeks these bugs won't be back for another 17 years. Pretty cool, but I will miss them. I like the sound they make.
The beard can't stay, though, after next week. I have another wedding to go to.
Sounds like M. septendecim.
