Thank You! Too few people realize what woman went through in order to gain their constitutional rights. I will be forever grateful to this generation of women.. The least we can do is vote! :-)
it pisses me off to see defenseless women get force fed and beaten and jailed for absolutely nothing . even if it was a 100 years ago and we got the right to vote and stuff i still wish this would not have happened..........
gahhhhhhh we r watching this in History and it's bugging me that I've heard the opening song before but i can't remember what it's called! can someone tell me?
Bravo, well done Dragon. Loved it and how you paced it. I want this movie and this soundtrack to show my daughter and my grandaughters along with the men in their lives. Thanks so much rosie
I'M 46 years old, mother of 3 boy(and i have 1 grandson 1 year old)Where did I live till now?I thought suffragettes were some noisy,bone-dry,men-haters spinsters trying to achieve vote instead of the "normal"family way of life.My mistake...or not.In books that I read it is scarcely and wrongly presented .Books written by men, naturally ,and illustrating their point of view on things. That's why we need this movie,to rise our interest on our self-respect.And we ourself, must be at the height of our
@puccalover13 Great question! It came from their fore-mothers who were abolitionist. Women like Lucretia Mott, and Susan B. Anthony. Also from the women of the British Suffrage movement, such as Emmeline Pankhurst.
While this movie is amazing, It really only tells part of the story. It took generations of women fighting for the right to vote before Alice Paul & Lucy Burns were able to accomplish what they did!
i am doing Women Suffrage for my history day exhibit!!!! actually we won district, county and we are going on to STATE!!!!! WE won FIRST PLACE !!!!! this is an amazing powerful important event that happened in history! i noticed all the things they went through to get the right to vote! they never gave up!!! I never thought of how much women actually suffered to stand up for our rights they stood up and made us have the right to vote!!! and other things only men could do back then !
Amazing movie! The ending was so powerful and I usually hate historical fiction but this was so awesome. I have so much appreciation for these women and I couldn't help but urge and cheer them on!
In my history class we aren't allowed to watch this because our principal thinks that this is "inappropriate" to watch. In some ways that is true but my teacher follows rules. So I'm stuck watching it on YouTube. That is fine with me but some of my classmates can't watch it.
As a man and I'm sure my counterparts will agree with me when I say this, us guys would be fucked three ways from Sunday if we didn't have the types of women we do in the world. Just sayin :)
Wow just finished watching this movie, I love it! As a young woman I never thought of how much women actually suffered to stand up for our rights! my respects and my thanks go out to these women who made a difference, thanks to them we have rights, and a better future.
One of the most powerful and most amazing movies ever. All the actresses do an amazing job, and the music fits perfectly. Want to know about the suffragists of America? I strongly recommend this movie!
@WitchesOfWales It's about women trying to get the vote. It starts in 1912, as you can see, and ends in 1920 with the passing of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote.
Thank you so much for posting this movie on here. I had to watch it for a history assignment and would have gone through more trouble renting it. Thanks!
and for those of u who think 'nothing can be done' then remember the women in this film didn't have even half the rights u have now and iots' thx to their suffering u have those rights
there's always a way to change the world if u really want to, and if ur not willing to take a chance to right what you think is wrong like these women did, then either ur content with ur lot like the housewife character in this
or i have no interest in even acknowledging your replies
OK, since my comment about housewives and confessions of being male I have been bombarded with comments about me being brainwashed or being wrong, so I decided to put a stop to it right now
to whatever extent I know of woman's suffering today is irrelevant, all I know is I think its' wrong and I would try my best not to do it
if u don't believe me then that's ur problem, but if u think there's sexism in society today then mbe u should take some action like these women did
Some of us are trying to do just that, Emrald. And when it comes to sexism today, it's often not so much the actions of individual men as it is the effects of social institutions that have not been sufficiently questioned or changed.
This is indeed one of my favorite movies. I LOVE the song in the beginning. I love how Alice and Lucy flipped a coin for just about anything. Alice Paul is a true American hero.
paul alice is my idole ,i love this woman she did so much for us around the world ,i'm from morroco and i'm 15 and this woman is my life i'm gratheful to her ,god bless her soul <3<3...
Fie! Every time I see such awful suffragette movies I cannot help but to revolt from my sex and invoke the Eteocles of Aeschylus:
"Be this my lot- Never in troublous nor in peaceful days To dwell with aught that wears a female form! Where womankind has power, no man can house, Where womankind feeds panic, ruin rules Alike in house and city! Look you now- Your flying feet, and rumour of your fears, Have spread a soulless panic on our walls, And they without do go from strength to strength, ...
... And we within make breach upon ourselves! Such fate it brings, to house with womankind. Therefore if any shall resist my rule Or man, or woman, or some sexless thing- The vote of sentence shall decide their doom, And stones of execution, past escape, Shall finish all. Let not a woman's voice Be loud in council! for the things without, A man must care; let women keep within- Even then is mischief all too probable!"
Love the beginning ! My favorite song ! I wish I could find the instrumental just like that. This movie is soo awesome ! I'm watching it in my US Film Class.. <3
we, thw WOMEN are the head of this nation, we have our rights to do what we desire, so LADIES!!! don't let anything to stand in your way, anyone stop you from what you put your mind to. everything is possible with GOD. lets stand firm, comfident, and be encouraged by the example of these two LADIES. lets follow their footsteps. to get something you must go through all kinds of problem but the end, you will call yourself a WINNER. let work together as one family, let stand up for our rights!!!
If you can, see the Occoquan Jailhouse, it's now the Lorton Arts Center and has a special exhibit covering the Suffragettes jailed and tortured there. A disgraceful shame which needs to be remembered.
This was a good movie! But my first battle, if I had been alive back then, would have been for the right to birth control information, which was illegal back then.
Oh and by the way, Stephanie Meyer wasn't even in the same damn time period as the Brontes. wow. I just lost faith in American literacy if Stephanie Meyer is compared to the Bronte sisters.
Good gracious I love this movie. It is so inspiring for anyone with the motivation and ambition to make a change for the betterment of society. And their clothes are gorgeous. I think any intelligent woman can appreciate both the seriousness of the story as well as how it is presented. :)
My teacher is trying to get this movie to show it in class, but the school isn't letting him. He said it was historically accurate of Women's Suffrage and wanted us to see it, but unfortunately he told us that he might get it in in a few years. Stupid school board.

what i think is wierd no offnce to anybody but
men in that time thot themselves like kings while the women were like slaves to them only fit to clean and cook

but thinik about it there was a woman prime minister a lot of the great novelists were girls like Emily Bronte And Charlotte bronte and jacquline wilson adn not forgeting stephanie meyer!
i cant belive how men could thiknk that women wernt mentaly smart enough to vote!
I'm sorry, you're actually putting Stephanie Meyer into a list of great women like Emily and Charlotte Bronte. Great women are people like Catherine of Aragon, who was responsable for women's education becoming popular and fashionable in England through her commission of the book "The Education of the Christian Woman." Great women are people like Lizzie Siddal, who earned her own income throught art in a male dominated proffession in the 1800s.
as a man i would like to personally apologise for any sexism todays women have to endure
i was brought up to believe women should be respected whatever they do
even if they are housewives, the point is that today most of them are housewives because they CHOOSE to be rather than because they have to other choice
and in the end, isn't that wat equal rights is about
@Emrald70 Most all men have long way to go my dear fellow before understanding what women CHOOSE to do. There is NOTHING equal YET!
Our biology reproduces the species, we love our children and sometimes we are challenged to raise our families without the help of even well-meaning, but woefully misguided men.
Until there is incentive for men to really look deeply at themselves, this unequal reality will continue. However, women can help by saying no to all holding us back, and standing firm.
@Emrald70 Question: How do you pro-actively participate in curbing sexism in the world and stand up for women's rights as a pro-feminist male/ feminist ally?? Because, charming women of child-bearing age with flattering apologies is simplistic, and not at all the way to participate in making a world that is equal for all people.
@Emrald70 Even today it is often not their own choice to become housewives for many reasons. Women are less desirable candidates for work because they can become pregnant and are perceived as generally less competent than men. This and the fact that a woman managing a career along with a family is seen as less maternal and feminine by many people. Men do not have that problem they are still expected to suport the family economically and therefore they are less likely to become "househusbands".
@Emrald70 i respect you for saying that sir, usually a man would try to make women look like we're bad people or something because we wan't our equal rights.
I am what they call a moderate feminist (never did sit well with me that we should respell half the English language because a word simply contains the suffix -man...there is no point when there are bigger things to do....)
However, I love this movie and I have an odd feeling that the 2020 election would be a fitting tribute to these ladies....if the President turned out to be MADAM President
no matter who you are, feminist or sexist, you should not choose a president baed on gender. or race or religion or anything like that for that matter. it should be based soley on qualifications and ideals.
Fair enough: personally, I would trade a dozen mediocre politicians for just one I could believe in. I guess I should have been more clear before: the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920. I think it would be wonderful if, on the 100th anniversary, a female was chosen as President and Alice Paul could look down from heaven and see a woman not only have a say in living under the government of her country, but be its leader.
Plus, there would be that tiny possibility of another first that makes me smile and laugh: imagine a 37 year old woman in an evening gown entering to Hail to the Chief at a State dinner. Now imagine her waddling over to ask the chef for an extra helping of cheese: she's not only the first female US president, but the first female head of state to get pregnant while in office (her opponents accuse her of doing it on purpose to make her point about lax maternity leave laws....)
some of the music in the movie is really unfitting

perpetrators of sexism aren't only men. it is the views of society as a whole (both men and women) that aid and abet sexist practices.
