This quake was on the west coast of Japan, while Tokyo is on the east coast , thus Tokyo got nowhere the energy of an 6.7. If I remember correctly no quake larger than about a 5.0 in Tokyo itself has struck since the 7.9 1923 Great Kantō earthquake in which my grandfather lost a brother and was almost killed himself. Latest estimates if a quake the magnitude of the Great Kantō were to hit Tokyo today are over 1 million deaths with tens of millions injured.

I grew up in Tokyo, and we're fortunate enough to live in a regular house, but most people in Tokyo live in apts. because real estate is so expensive. I'm with you though, because believe me, I ususally ran out of the house during these things. They can be scary.

...even when LA is not a country, hehe... but yup, 9.5 would turn us all to dust, and I can't assure any building or any city is safe, 'cause we have never felt a 9.5 in our cities. The strongest earthquake ever registered was in 1960 in Chile, it was 9.5, after that the 2nd one was in 1964 in Alaska (9.3, .4 sth like that), and then 9.1 Sumatra n stuff... but never in out cities so we can just not assure we are safe, time will tell.

Hey Doggfair, Over 6,000 people died in 1995 in Kobe, Japan during a 7.2 quake. Modern Japanese construction is pretty good but a lot of the older structures(mainly homes) are still shit.

In the Los Angeles eartquake which was only like 5.6 or 5.8 I could hear the beams of metal as they bent from side to side. It was such a creepy sound. And i could see the other highrises sway from side to side. Downtown LA was bustling with people when the quake it. Everyone was caught by surprise as in with any earthquake.
