  • Arif can do more on his bass then most guitarists can do on their guitars (Y)

  • holy fuck he's good, proud to say i'm from the same town as him :D

  • Excellent song on bass but the tone on this is fucking horrific.

  • awesome!

  • My favorite bass player of "commercial" metal scene.

  • Arif is a boss

  • sacrifices are made to peoples' tone to make for a better recording. as this was clearly cut from garageband/guitar hero, it is not meant to sound good on its own, but in the track. it has a guitar, kick drum and vocal to fight with. this is what they came up with.

  • @xsonicassassinx Exactly, people never seem to realize this.

  • @xsonicassassinx agreed. if you actually listen to when he hits the low notes in this recording, they kinda shake your ear drums and if you imagine how it would fit in the mix with the different frequencies....Arif's bass sounds heavy as fuck

  • @xsonicassassinx exactly, finally someone with brain

  • This actually sounds so crap on it's own!

  • @Ollievarium His bass writing is good, this is just badly mixed, holy hell... Listen to the actual song and you can hardly hear his parts because of it.

  • Don't like such tone :/

  • @SgtZaqq You have to consider it as a whole package. If you get the chance listen to Lamb Of God's stems. The guitars sound so 'mid-y' it's unreal. But when brought together with everything else they sound sick

  • @BZ2YYZ I listened to the actual song and must admit its bass is really inaudible.

  • Amazing

  • @utookmypancake not making fun, just amazed at human illiteracy.

  • @AkousticBrock im just amazed as to why YEW would waist yer time on youtube talking shit to someone, yew honestly have no idea how much saying any of this is changing my life whatsoever. because yew dont like the was i type is going to change me? not in the slightest. so why even attempt to put me down or make my day any worse? because i PROMISE yew, im in the SAME exact good mood i was 5 minutes ago before i logged on. so it seems that yew have lost at the game of maturity my friend(:

  • is the guy in the back blake richardson

  • Best Seinfeld intro ever.

  • Hell yeah man!

    Not an easy feat!

    KEEP ROCKING!

  • how do yew make a song that yew only hear one instrument? plz reply

  • @utookmypancake It helps to not talk like a tree humping retard.

  • @brandipants182 uh okay? because yer cool right?

  • @utookmypancake Insanely.

So cool that i can actually spell.

  • @utookmypancake

Multitrack Recording, they released the mix stems.

  • @BottledAdrenaline

and how do yew get that?

  • @utookmypancake

Would have replied if 'yew' were literate.

  • @AkousticBrock okay so get on youtube n make fun of how someone types? arite.

  • if your wondering what the idea persay behind his tapping solo, Its just tapping minor arpeggios really. sounds dope as shit though.

  • Hes tone preaty suck

But i rly love this dude!

  • This would be much cooler if he turned the gain either up or down, it sounds not distorted enough for a distorted tone and too distorted for a clean tone. If he used a Rickenbacker though, the tone would be fine, it just doesn't work with his bass for my ears.

  • he plays way too good, but the sound most be really ripped, it doesnt sound good at all !

  • Lol.. why the fuck sweep on a bass. I'm a bass player and I look up to him too. I think he's the most talented up to date. And he lived on my street before he was well known! Hahaha!

  • Although I love his playing, his is mainly good for tapping and slapping, IMO it doesn't sound that great for those lower notes

  • @danychi24

lol nobody ever tabs that right, so that part is a mystery to me. He did the same 8-10-12 9-10-12 run live in Atlanta a few months ago for that part

  • 2:49 to 2:52 insane

  • come to nz pth!! also you guys should check out my cover of this and let me kno what ya think, or else a kitten will die miraculously

  • it's tapping...not sweeping

  • @DarkEternal250 Martin Boooth! Staying behind tonight? MO.

  • nice bass sweeps @ 2:26

  • @sum16kwt i thought that aswell first, then i watched them play it live and its actually tapping. hes so amazing

  • @xXPatKearneyXx actually,, yeah, its both tapping and sweeping at the same time,, tapping the sweep notes,, try it out on bass,, it works great =)

  • @DarkEternal250 He doesn't write ALL of the lyrics. I rely on the back of my PTH albums to say that, where they say who wrote what and stuff.

  • Taaaaaassstttttttyyyyyyyy Baaaaaaaaassssssssssss

  • 2:49 is magical.

    disgusting swag.

  • For anybody who likes this, I would suggest checking out a drum track along with it. It makes the bass sound so much more synchronized and plus the bass and drums work well together.

  • Thanks for uploading this! I can now learn it by ear and play it with my band :)

  • "SLAP-A-DA-BASS!" :D

  • its a spector euro 5

  • Eesh it must be so dull being a bassist...this guy is great no doubt but bass just sounds so bad on its own, it really needs the other instruments to shine.

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK I agree.

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK That's because bass for songs like this have tones that are meant to fit into the entire song. Listen to this, then listen to a solo bassist, the tone's way different. Also listen to the guitar tracks, and then take a listen to say Steve Vai. Vai's tone will be far better because the guitar is meant to shine, whereas in bands such as these, it's not just one guitar that has the focus.

  • @Meelad360 I think the guitars on their own still sound good, wheras the bass just does not. The difference between vais tone and these guitar tracks is that vai's is mostly set for lead playing so he has a bunch of reverb and delay on it, its not so much a 'better tone' or anything, its just for different moods, the guitar is no more the focus so im not sure what point you are trying to make there.

Im afraid im not really a fan of solo bassists either, I have great respect for guys like

  • @Meelad360 victor wooten who obviously have great technical skill on their instrument I just think the bass has such an ugly tone that it should never be the main focus, its at its best (for me) when its backing the other instruments unnoticably ie you only hear it when its not there. When listening to guys like victor wooten im just left thinking whats the point? That would sound so much better on a proper guitar which has so much more range and options, there is a reason why the great

  • @Meelad360 classical composers such as beethoven, vivaldi, motzart etc tended to write their melodies and lead phrases in higher octaves, they just sound much more pleasing to human ears than when dealing with the ugly lows of a bass instrument which are great when backing others up but kinda pointless as a lead.

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK Listen to Envy on the Coast, Tool and R.A.T.M./Audioslave for bass tones that sounds great usual extremely technical bands have awful bass tones I don't know why it doesn't mean that bass has to sound bad on its own though I usually think all instruments sound worse alone than in a band situation.

  • I'd like to see Arif on bass and Matt from ABR on drums in one band...

  • anyone know what bass arif is using in that pic? it's an ibanez i know that but what model?

  • @thegaijin3 Thats where your wrong my friend. this here is a spector costume bass.:) mate has one these, they are really nice.

  • @blazefire94 alright thanks man, im guessing they're hard to find?

  • @thegaijin3 Just go to spector.com and find you girl.

  • @thegaijin3 its no ibanez, its a spector rebop 5 or euro 5

  • What effects pedal is he using at 2:26? Sounds sick

  • @mydyingnorma i dont believe he is using one, that part is all tapping, so it just sounds different

  • @mydyingnorma Yeah, if it's anything though, it's a chorus pedal.

  • @mydyingnorma It's not an effect pedal mate. ;P It's just tapping.

  • That's not really arif.

  • @BigJplkoplko ...what.

  • 0:57-1:50 nice bass slap

  • @xXslaverst0anguishXx Thanks :D

  • @ajrapps thanks for what? ;-)

  • @xXslaverst0anguishXx You liked my bass playing on this track. So I said thanks. Always nice to have a fan :P

  • so proud hes persian

  • does any body know what model spector this is in the photo?

  • @TheMikegroves1 Euro Lx.

  • What the hell awesomme Bassist!!!!!!!

  • how were you able to get just the bass track off this song? I mean it doesnt really matter much, since this is such a kickass bass track

  • @l337man4 Songs are recorded multi-tracked, most often, this is just a single track off the recording.

  • @arranrhodda Bass is nearly always single tracked.

  • goddamn our poor family now i can only afford a cheap four string

  • I love Arif's Bass, Bass Playing and Last Name _\m/

    PTW ftw \o\o\o\o\o\o

  • @kakilleh PTH* sorry huhu

  • Song is great, but this bass track sounds horrible. Though it does sound good in the song, just horrible by itself. Arif is amazing.

  • Jesus has put on weight..

  • *replay*

  • was following this until like 0:59

    then my brain exploded briefly

  • @talflick not as much as 2:27

  • Muslim bass playing Jesus <3

  • @steve Dude, if you find videos of Pink Floyd playing comfortably numb, there are some when the vocalist is like jumping around and crying and shit while playing the guitar solo. Another case in point, everything Buckethead does is extremely emotional. It's how comfortable you ate behind the instrument that makes you feel comfortable enough to show emotion playing it.

  • arif is god

  • could you make a drum+bass backing track to bloodmeat?

  • I personally find it awesome that he uses a funky tone for metal songs.

  • this makes me wanna get a 5 string so bad

  • @myspacceer I did get a 5 string because of him. Don't regret it one bit

  • in the mix the bass tone sounds great. maybe it could be a hair louder tho, maybe. but you cant really hear it in the mix that much because he copies what the guitar is doing a lot of the time so you cant hear him individually. hes just putting BEEF on the guitars and not trying to be heard as just a plain old bassist.

  • As a bassist I can say that the bass is plenty loud in bloodmeat. If you have an average set of speakers it sounds really boomy and uneven. You need either good speakers or laptop speakers to get bloodmeat to sound right.

  • @jewishjackhammer Perhaps it is the guitar which copies the bass. I was the bassist in a band and composed most of the riffs...

  • @basshiko He copies the guitar in alot of parts. Luke and Tim are the main composers, Arif wrote all of the lyrics until Scurrilous

  • If you want the mp3s, message me

  • ah man, i hate the tone on its own.

    im sorry.

    he's friggin amazing.

but I prefer it in the mix

  • I agree its too thick

  • Well that's the point, in the studio it's eq'd to fit in the mix.

  • does anyone know how arif gets his tone? i would die for it

  • that's mostly what a Spector sounds like.

  • @nicesweater yes. i own a euro 5lx. just like this. it only requires some knob settings. then boom. EXACTLY dead on

  • bass overdrive ;)

  • There really is no way other than a spector. I've tried putting the same pickups in other basses but no.

You need a spector Euro or USA - they run pretty expensive. I'm saving up for the next two years to get a USA Spector. I sold my MIA Jazz to help out. The tapping part he uses a chorus though.

  • amazing!

  • in fairness his tone isnt as good as it could be. but sounds ok in the mix i suppose

  • I hate his tone in the mix, personally. You cannot hear near enough of him in their final mixes. It's absurd.

  • See I hear everyone complain about that all the time, but I don't see it. I hear the bass pretty clearly in most of their songs.

  • Man I think it's so buried in the mix that it's disgraceful. I mean you can always hear vocals, you can always hear every guitar note, you can always hear every snare hit.. why not give the bass a little volume? Because they clearly don't give him the chance he deserves. Maybe my ear just sucks.. Not sure haha.

  • No dude, I agree that his bass doesn't get the best mix deal it could. It could definitely be more audible. I think they give guitars the most volume because of the genre really, it's sort of dependent on the time signatures and technical aspects of the guitars. Vocals clearly need to be audible at all times.

But really I'm pretty sure Arif is in charge of most of that stuff anyway. I know he writes the songs and the like. So I mean, I feel like the mixing is the way he wants it.

  • Dude, Arif is the main songwriter and lyricist. It's why he gets so many little solos too. The mix is great. Sequoia throne could be slightly louder and Kezia (save Blindfolds Aside) needs a boost on the bass but with Fortress it was nailed.

  • Arif is jesus reincarnated as a bass player

  • He is middle Eastern xD

  • Persian, to be precise. His Mom's Azerbaijani but if we want to dig up history we're all African. :P

  • yes he is

  • @levipearl2112 praise the lord

  • @levipearl2112

no jesus never died hes been playing bass since 6 B.C.

  • @TheAlliesCanHelp Hehehehe good one xP

  • @levipearl2112 i thought that was geddy haha

  • @zombeast5052 Don't get me wrong geddy is jesus too... haha

  • @levipearl2112 arif is much nicer, talented, intellegent, and inspiring than jesus.... it's particularly funny to me that you pick arif to compare to jesus, as arif is an antitheist... have you never payed attention to the lyrics he writes for the band???

  • @crankycactus You mad bro??

  • @levipearl2112 no.... definately not mad... just sayin...

  • @crankycactus Well, I should have expected some crazy anti-religious nut to come on here and flip out If I make a little joke, It's YouTube right

  • @levipearl2112 didnt flip out... i just thought that you should know that you are comparing jesus to an antitheist humanist.... virtually opposite...

  • @crankycactus I wasn't comparing anything, I don't believe in God either... doesn't mean I can't make a joke, but whatever, internet arguments get nowhere

  • @crankycactus in one interview he said he's the band's "muslim"

  • @2und2sind4 it was a joke...

  • The thing about this is, thinking about it in a studio setting, while just sitting on a couch, chillin, it's hard enough, but then thinking about doing it live, while jumping around and all the adrenaline pumping through you and stuff, that's just insane.

  • wow tapping

  • the tapping on 2:49 is too insane for me!

  • the hole thing its pretty insane

  • Dude....I love you so much for getting the bloodmeat tracks, Thank you so much :D

  • The main riff would sound cooler if he played more notes, but still thats the only bit i can play atm...

  • arif pwns so much :D

  • Tone is too dirty for my taste, but great playing nonetheless!

  • arif's tone is so fucking cool

  • i dont like it, i like dan briggs style more. alot warmer.

  • Amen to that godlike statement.

  • arif is a sweeeeet bassist tho, dont get me wrong.

  • Oh no he is very good, but I do prefer Dan's tone and riff structure. He seems to stray from the guitar structure much more than Arif. I just wish they'd have Arif a little more audible in the mix is all.

  • Dan is amazing. He's way more difficult than arif, but that's because I can't find the shapes. I can easily hear key signatures and notes by ear but shapes are something I can't figure out.

Tapping shapes, on the other hand... ;D

  • @jarhead4214

dan and arif are both sick bassists. to be honest, i prefer arif because he plays with emotion for example take the seqoia harmonic bass part,

dan is sick aswell, he plays very fast but most of his bass play isn't played with emotion like arif does in my opinion

  • @moejepoepe1 Never thought about that, but it's very true. But I just like Dan's style more. Take Prequel to the Sequel for example. ;)

  • @moejepoepe1 There's no such thing as emotion when you play bass, guitar or any other instrument, bro. Are you implying one player feels more emotion than another? No, you're not. So learn some vocab.

"I think Arif phrases his parts better"

"I prefer Arif because he uses harmonics to provide a countermelody and usually doesn't follow the guitar riffs"

That said, both of them are worthy of much respect, but Dan is just better.

  • @Steve128967 "There's no such thing as emotion when you play bass, guitar or any other instrument, bro" You must be high off your ass if you believe that "brah".

  • @spaceshipafrica No, you just have a limited vocabulary and apparently don't realize that there is nothing "emotional" about PLAYING an instrument.

Can you have parts which are evocative? Yes

Can you have parts which are melodic/well-phrased/etc.? Yes

Then what makes something more emotional than anything else? Oh wait, NOTHING. Vocals are emotional. Instruments are not.

  • @Steve128967 Whats blues then? or R&B? or Jazz genres like Swing and Bebop?

They ALL have emotion dude. If there was no emotion in music, Music would be as pointless as climbing over a glass wall to see what's on the other side.

  • @OreoCream19 they evoke emotion, sure. That doesn't mean any one player plays "with emotion" because everyone feels something. Jesus christ.

I'm not talking about the MUSIC. Same thing with Buckethead the douchebag below said. Does he have extremely beautiful, melodic phrases? Yes. But there's nothing making him more emotional than any other guitarist. FUCK.

  • @Steve128967 Its weird that it bothers you so much but its not really a big deal.

  • @TyeWatson It doesn't really bother me, I just think it's a sign of laziness when someone lacks the vocabulary to accurately describe a particular player's redeeming qualities. Fact is, there isn't shit about emotion when you play, unless you're a robot. End of.

  • @Steve128967 Well the description of emotion states, Emotion is associated with mood, temperament, personality and disposition, and motivation. No Human being can copy an exact performance. Now if the musician is in a very bad mood or had a rough day his playing abilities will show. Temperament plays a major part in music as well. You might say that you can get a robot to play an instrument and compare it to a human playing. Learning an instrument is like learning to speak. Very close relation.

  • @Steve128967 I am simply stating that emotion does play a factor into playing an instrument. If you did not have motivation to pick one up and create a melody. I'd take a good look at the word Temperament. When I said Learning to play an instrument is like learning to speak. Its basically when your a baby. You Can't speak right? Same with when you pick up an instrument. Then you learn to do things by ear. Then you learn to structure it. Then if you feel up to it, you write a book or song.

  • @Steve128967 This would be part 3. Anything where your brain is working and thinking of something like creating a bassline/melody, your initiating emotions. Giving you Tone later on when your trying to figure out what you want it to sound like. Giving it emotion. then when you play it, it will be slightly different then before and each time you play it, it will never be 100% like the first time you played it no matter what unless you got a computer to do it. I could keep going on and on. :P

  • @TyeWatson Yes, every human being feels an emotion all the time, including when playing an instrument, thus making it impossible for people to judge players "by emotion". You can judge players by phrasing, tone, dynamics, vibrato, etc... which is what people usually construe as "emotion"

  • @Steve128967 pff, it's just my opinion, and btw my english is nog very good. i don't say dan briggs is bad, of course he's is absolutely talented. arif aswell. if i listen to obfuscation from btbam and selkies ,dan plays very good and tight but i just like arifs style more. both are talented progressive bassists.

BillXHETASXCook and OreoCream19 are right. they ALL have emotion. you need it when you play an instrument.

  • @moejepoepe1 yes, every player has emotion, because they're all human beings who feel everything the same as you or me do, there's nothing that makes one play "without emotion" or with it.

fucking hell. Dan has great phrasing (Viridian anyone?) and really melodic parts, Arif uses more techniques but his fingerstyle is weaker, etc. that's how you talk about instrumentalists, not by how much bullshit "emotion" they have.
