he changes some part of the song to make it fresh.. this song is like 20 yrs old..
its amazing how a perfectionist innovates.. ^^
maybe because he is tired playing the album version.. he plays this for like about 20 yrs from now.. same goes why he have diff intros in clffs of dover..........
Respect from who? If you ask to any guitar player with knowledge of music, probably he´s gonna tell you that Eric is one of the bests... If you ask to some guy who ONLY listen Maroon5, Linkin Park, or some MTV band...
You may have a point there. But thats the thing. The avg. joe knows who Jimmy Page is.. but most will not know EJ. IMO.. Page was a pioneer, while EJ is a master at his craft.
only because he doesn't play a hundred thousand notes per second. i think it's sad that THIS is considered "modern guitar" playing. a good mixture between both playing fast and showing off AND playing with feeling, expressing and passionate...
man, i cant believe why people discredit this version of manhattan, i think this version the best improvisation parts ive seen from eric! alot of advanced chord changes in there, and he nails them pretty good i think! also he puts alot of feeling in the song, what else is missing besides a better quality recording of this version?
What happened with EJ?, i agree with u guys he changed his sound and tone and definitively he plays forward, i dont know why he changed the way he used to play, but i dont really care, he still keeping his unique feel and presence.
Sounds like hes improvising some part of his lines now, although keeping it mostly the same. Seems like he's having more fun in this video than in most I have seen.
Also, he plays a diminished line around 1:40 which made me laugh and smile. I don't think it fits the song though. On the whole, it's still good.
yea not so sure about those dim. lines (has another one at 2:02 or so) and hes not really hittin all the changes in good time like he usually would but still good
Yes, he doesn't play the song quite the same as he used to...EJ's tone change a lot over the course of recording "Bloom"...his overdrive seems to have more fuzz, just not the same violin tone as he used to have. I saw EJ in concert earlier this year while he was promoting bloom, and what a show...although he never played Manhattan. I find it funny how over the years Erics hair style has changed so much..Must be his wife rubbing off on him.
Meu cover de "Manhattan" :) olhem la e comentem galera :)

it's 12 years old, to be exact (1996).

actually I've heard this song played by Eric in 1984...so it is over 20 years old
WMDG3 4 years ago 4
Aren't you confusing it with Cliffs of Dover? Manhattan is from '96 album "Venus Isle"...
MadGriffith 4 years ago
Manhattan was written before Venus Isle even came out. The earliest I've heard EJ perform it was '84 at ACL.

The tone is different because he doesn't have his echoplexes. If he had his echoplexes, the sound would be very, very different.

well the tone quality is probably the camera, not eric himself

This is not a good version of Manhattan, sounds like an amateur playing it. He's totally out of tune.
aaronshaff2006 4 years ago
I thought it was beautiful. He doesn't play it like an amateur or a pro, he plays like ERIC JOHNSON.

I think it is a registration's fault. Quite a lot of an unwanted delay can be heard...
