I'm bothered by the tempo. Been listening to Mendelsohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor all my life, & this is definitely too fast. Sounds like he's in a hurry to get it over with.I'll stick with Isaac Stern on this one.
no, u'r entirely wrong.THis a happy part, 3rd mvt , with 'jumping' mood, high spirit, so the speed doesn't matters, as long as it's quick , and quicker than the previous 2 mvtment.
for who's are thinking that the speed in this recording have to wait a few days when i'll upload some recordings of heifetz when he was in his childhood, that was truly fingers speed man.
What on earth was that screeching sound at the beginning? For the Love of God/Allah /Jesus Christ please edit that out. This concerto sounds to good to be started off with that nonsense noise. (I`m an editing nazi)
It was supposed to be a more lively piece, differing from the previous two, darker movements. Mendelssohn himself described the beginning melody of the 1st movement as "giving him no peace," so this movement might be meant to show off the virtuosity of the player, to lead to a more explosive finale. For this reason, Joseph Joachim described the Mendelssohn violin concerto as the "innermost, the heart's jewel."
Fantastic performance. Such wonderful character and charm. He has such a wonderful charm about him. So old-world. It is a pity that the recording is so old and that the bass is overcompensated but still, masterful work from on of the greatest violin deities.
The concerto wasn't played any faster than I've heard it elsewhere. One problem with this video is that it's at least a half-tone sharp, meaning that the video itself is running a bit too fast.
Well, I agree it adds energy, but I think what was meant was that maybe the tape was tampered a bit. You know, with tapes, if they run just a little too fast, everything's pitch is raised a bit and obviously, the speed increases.
But then again, I don't have anything to compare its speed to
Try Itzhak Perlman's recording of it at 13. It's just a bit slower. But after watching this carefully I think it was meant to be played faster - the conductor seems to be moving normally, and Jascha's arm was always a bit mad so that's no surprise =)
This Mendelssohn 3rd mvt. performance is about the most rollicking joy fest I've ever heard on a recording--a lot of distortion in the sound, but the energy is there; either from the land of the munchkins, or like a whole barnyard was set loose. Added to favs. Thank-you.
If I recall corecctly, this is from the 1939 film "They Shall Have Music", in which Heifetz (playing himself, of course) is eventually persuaded to save a faltering music school from financial ruin by appearing in concert with the school orchestra. (That's why the orchestra members look so happy.)
That's no conductor, that's the late/great actor Walter Brennan!! (Real McCoy's, Judge Roy Bean etc). I'm a Perlman fan, but my mom thought Heifetz was the best. Mom was always right :)
Perlman is certainly one of the best this century, but if you look at lengendary violinist from last century, you'll see that many actually excell Perman's playing one way or another (and vice versa). There is no perfection in music, someone is always better at something. Look at David Oistrakh / Leonid Kogan / Issac Stern / Nathan Milstein / Menuhin (in his teens) ...etc. Wonderful violinists that we will never see as good ones in our time, at least not yet
it may as well be like this...no one ever records this concerto again. nothing will ever surpass this

This is from the film, "THEY SHALL HAVE MUSIC," when they MADE GREAT FILMS,
which is NO LONGER IN EVIDENCE IN THE CONTEMPORARY world of film.
Heifetz would NEVER have participated in ANYTHING made today.

Yes, and it`s not necessary. We all know he`s good. No need to have our acclamations reaffirmed by a bunch of screaming ladies.

I have to agree with the person who said he needed to slow down. He makes the Mendelssohn concerto sound like a stunt, like Flight of the Bumblebee.

I disagree. The speed adds immensely to the energy.
