The laughter was not canned, the clip looks like the one shown on the BBC Sports Review of 1991, which was in front of a live studio audience, including the man himself.

The laughter wasn't canned. Brian did a series of live monologues on tour round the country in the last year or so of his life and used to play a recording of this. What we are hearing is a recording of one of the "Evening with Johnners" shows. Live laughter
