@lanceporter I have some video taken during the CBC/SRC strike back a few years ago when there were no on-air personalities/voice overs. I'll be adding more content after a hardware upgrade.
Am I the only one who thinks this intro and theme represents the last season where hockey made sense to real hockey fans? I'm so sick of people who just discovered hockey 5 minutes ago because their team suddenly won a cup. Hockey died in June of 1994 as far as I'm concerned. There will never be another series as good as that one. It's been down hill ever since.
Hey all. at about 0:11, do you hear some sort of a high pitched sound, like a bird chirping.
does anyone else know what i'm talking about? Is it the sound of a guitar string being scratched? Seriously, what on earth is that, it's bothered me, quite literally, for about 20 years.
fuck the ties penalty shots are more exciting with a tie you cant see ovechkin and gaborik or datsyuk pull of moves that you wouldn't see because of ties fag kenm20 you probably like grass hockey hahahaha
It's business and it shouldn't be a moment for nostalgia, but for all the kids that grew up watching HNIC in the 90s, TSN/CTV stole a part of our souls when they bought the hockey song. P.S. Anyone know where I can find the 90s version of the "Hockey Tonight" song? the one with the cheesy text graphics... preferrably from around 1994. Thanks
@surfer53 I have an mp3 version of the "Hockey Tonight" song. It's the one they played before the last game at the gardens. Let me know if you're interested
This is how I first remember seeing HNIC opening its broadcasts. I was only 8 in 1993, and for a while I couldn't figure out why we always kept on seeing the Leafs every week. Fortunately, after the lockout ended in 1995, that's when they started doing the doubleheaders. Those were good times back then, although it really sucked having to go to bed right after Coaches' Corner.
they are douches i use to do security there at the one in vancouver and there is some bitchy women there, one called me rude just cus i gave her the answer she wasnt looking for and another calls me a stalker just for almost walking into the womens washroom
The thing I miss the most about CBC losing the theme song is how cool it would be when you'd hear "THIS IS A CBC SPORTS PRESENTATION" with that opening music and then it would kick into the Ron opening, and then the theme.
I've got that opening with Ron exactly like you said. It was broadcast just before this opening. I'll get around to posting it one day. This particular opening was from the first show of the 1993 season, They did an opening montage with "Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers. Plus they included video of behind-the-scenes of HNiC as they were setting up for the first game. It's a really cool intro!
Do you have the one that used to play after the first game on saturday night double-headers? I wish I could describe it, but it was generally the song that was played when they put up who the 3 stars of the game were.
Yes, I believe I do. I've also got the segment that includes the background music when they were reviewing completed games. It's a pretty good tune that could even be used as the new HNiC theme...
I've got all sorts of things. Been collecting them mostly since the early 90's. I'm slowly going through my tapes to pull content off. I'm going to post more as the weeks roll on.
This gives me goosebumps. God, the nineties were kickass. That's when the NHL was awesome and there was tons of dynasties.

@surfer53 what makes you say that hockey died in June 1994? Because New York won or because there was a strike afterwards?

Are you referring to the music cues used through 1998? It makes me regret not taping hockey games on Radio-Canada when they had that strike in 2002.

I recorded portions of the games during that strike.
