As far as I understand, Japanese fishers kill dolphins to survive. Too many dolphins follow the fishing boats and eat fish before fishers can catch the fish. Therefore, the government permits the fishers to kill a minimum number of the dolphines to protect the fishers. I believe that killing dolphins is a hard task for the fishers. They do not enjoy it. Please do not be cruel to push those fishers to give up their jobs.

It may be true that whales have been hunted, but this is an unprecedented amount of hunting. With advanced technology like radars and better hunting equipment this is not the fishing of our forefathers. The fact is that people do not come first, that is arrogant and ignorant of you to say. Do you not realize that all things come from the earth, every single product. We are not two separate cultures--our entire ecosystem is highly intertwined. What we do to the earth is what do to ourselves.

the video shows a forest (since whales swim in the forest). how would they lose habitat if anything they are gaining habitat because of global warming (due to mainly natural causes) has risen the sea levels.

scientifically it has been proven that whales deem death by human interaction (eg harpooning et al) as a natural process to their life span. I am not in favour of this cruel act, but we must respect the natural order and leave these people to their jobs. Whals and dolphins have zones of oceans they live in if pollution dirtys the water or ship routs are placed there they have less ocean zone to swim in so there normal living area get smaller cause if they swim in there normal area they usually get hit by boats... What are you talking about? There are MANY different whale species. Some are endangered, but the species that the whalers hunt for, the minke whale, is NOT endangered.
Why shouldn't we catch whales as long as the species is not endangered? Is the whale such an important urban totem animal that we should abandon an old tradition? It would be tempting to ask if we should refrain from eating beef because the cow is a sacred animal in India.

People do care about pigs, but for now, they're not in any danger of extinction. Additionally, at least pigs are killed humanely, unlike the whales. Who could possibly argue that being harpooned and dragged by these harpoons until you bleed to death is even a remotely humane way to die. And as for the Faroe Islands, dont give us any of these fantasies that the whales dont feel any pain, thats just something that your great grandfathers came up with to make you have less doubts about this murder.

for those of you who are making fun of the "loss of habitat" part...FYI..whales do live in the ocean...but that forest is the Tongass forest...the inland sea bordering the Tongass is the summer feeding grounds for the endangered humpback whale!! The Bush Admin helped the timber industry target 300,000 acres to be clear cut...which represents the biological heart of the Tongass...

the New Zealand government is against Whaling and has tried to make it ileagal in international waters but they were out voted because japan bought the votes of little countries like the fiji and papa new guinni. and if The New Zealand Sent a Battle ship out to attack the whalers that would just make war between Nz and Japan. And unlike Usa Nz is a peacefull country!
