  • very nce to here,my chihuahuha has CH also.shes doing great and full of happyness ,x

  • Isabel has had ataxia from birth. She is now (4th Feb 2011) 16 months. The ataxia is degenerative. I have had her on homeopathic medication since August. It immediately gave her more bounce and energy. In November I ran out, had her reassessed and waited a further 8 days for her new meds. By the 7th day she could no longer stand unaided. Four days back on the medication, she was up and bouncing and happier than ever!

  • Our Karma-pup was the same way... She way put down obout 2 weeks ago... :(

  • @annmarihagen

    HI,

When did you feel it was the 'right time' to let her go? how bad did she get before? Not sure what to expect. Isabel has kept going way longer than I thought she would but now she finds it hard to do her 'business' and her front legs have started giving way..

Would appreciate some feedback. Thank you, Sarah

  • What a gorgeous little lady! I have a healthy JRT who I love to bits and it breaks my heart to know that there are selfish people out there that abuse such amazing animals just for money! My JRT is my best friend and is more intelligent than some humans I know! I never heard of Spinocerebellar Ataxia before this video, more needs to be done to raise awareness so we can stop this horrible condition. As they say, prevention is better than a cure, since there is no cure we only have one option!

  • God................you're so lovingly beautiful!!! Love you both already XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

  • I love jacks and have one of my own. She is healthy. This video just broke my heart. This condition is progressive and there is no treatment. Eventually, the symptoms reach the point where euthanasia becomes the most humane option. Responsible breeders are doing everything possible to eradicate this terrible condition. It is the backyard breeders and the puppy mills who are in it strictly for the money who are allowing dogs who have the gene for this disease to continue to breed.

  • cute video... it is interesting that animals and humans share certain diseases.

  • Youtube wont let me post a URL, so you must do a Google search. Lithium SCA1.

  • I have 2 Jack Russells. I also have the human form of this disease. The NIH is doing a study now on using Lithium Carbonate to treat it. Lithium is an old drug used in bipolar disease, but also seems to work in Ataxia. I bet it would work in Ruby. Ask your vet.

  • Hi - thanks for the vid, it has made me feel a little better about my 9 month puppy being diagnosed. Can anone tell me if this is likely to not get much worse???

  • Katy has had it since 6 weeks old and always had a strange walk. She is now 10 & has had major problems over the last few months. Please help your puppy as much as possible. They can have a wondeful life.Katy has been on holiday with me played & walked on beaches grass footpaths using her wheels. She walks twice a day.She loves life & plays again. Has started to lose weight after becoming a couch potatoe dog.She goes for hydrotherapy this helps the balance loves the pool now swims in straight lines.

  • thanks for your reply - I have felt very alone since finding out about this, it hard to watch chloe everyday wondering if everytime she stumbles or falls if the is getting worse. Ive noticed alot of comments posted here are from people to have JRT. The vet said it was uncommen for a dog like chloe to get this but not impossible - I adopted her from a pound and we suspect she is a staffy cross. She also has some spinal defomities - is this usually associated with ataxia ??

  • There are a number of types of Ataxia. If you Google Jack Russell Terrier Ataxia, you will find out a lot more about the problem. I do believe that it can also have connections with spinal deformities. Katy has cerebral ataxia, wher the part of the brain that contols balance shrinks.

  • my 4 yr JRT Pinto has had his wheels for over a year now. He now cannot walk without the wheels. As I observe him, I wonder what to expect next. Oh yeah - he is now a little marshmellow. Keeping his weight in check is a CHALLENGE!

  • Yay for Katy!!! :) That's great to hear!

  • I forgot my password etc, but I am following up on the comment below. Katy has had her wheels for 4 weeks now and is doing great. She walks for 20 minutes or so every evening, has been to the park playing ball, and even walks short distances in the house without her wheels. She also stands to eat & drink. It is the best thing ever. She is also getting hydrotherapy, which seems to be helping too. I no longer have an old, depressed dog and she is happy doing what a dog's gotta do!

  • Katy got her wheels yesterday and goes like the wind! It was very emotional watching her running about, and it only took 5 minutes or so after fitting for her to find her legs again. We are going to have fun every day now, and provide amusement for all of the locals when they see her. I am so glad that we found out what the problem is and took the decision to do what we can for her, instead of taking the 'easy' option of euthanasia. She sure is not ready for that yet!

  • Anna reminds me so much of Katy my JRT with Ataxia, even to the point of when she sits to pee! What a beautiful video and a gorgeous JRT.

  • Hi, I have a 10 year old JRT called Katy just diagnosed with Ataxia. She is our 3rd JRT and has the sweetest nature ever. She is to be featured on a TV programme about disabled pets soon, and is due to get her dogmobile ('wheels') tomorrow. Can't wait to see her 'walking' properly again, even if it is with 'wheels'!

  • My girlfriend has sca11 ataxia and it's good to see that animals also suffer,so hopefully researcher can work with this and may be find a cure one day for this truly awful condition.

And hopefully more money can be put into research.

  • The cure can only come from responsible breeders that give DNA tot he researchers from dogs that are affected. otherwise no research and without the funds no cure. researchers have to be able to trace a pedigree of DNA samples and backyard breeders cannot supply that. Only professional/purebred dog breeders can.

  • I have a JRT names George who is 1.5 years old and is too, living with Ataxia. It was so moving for me to see Anna. What a sweety! I hope she is doing well and please, stay in touch. I felt alone with Geroge's condition until I ran across Anna.

  • I also have a jack with cerebellar ataxia (in pennsylvania). I have a wheelchair for him. It acts like a walker. He loves chasing other dogs at the dog park.

  • I Phillip. My jack also has cerebellar ataxia. He is 1.5 years old. He gets around find but kind of in a bucking bronco zig zag sort of way. Is it possible that this cannot progess and get worse or is it highly likely that my dog will one day need a wheelchair too? Also, does your jack avoid hard wood floors???

  • My JRT avoids tiled floors, vinyl floors, wwod floors, in fact anything that she may slip on

  • Your sweet Anna really touched my heart. We also have a Jack Russell with Cerebellar ataxia. Very sweet & loving.... special angels sent from above.

  • good for you! what you're doing is a wonderful thing, and thanks for giving that dog the chance of living a loving life, other people would have just "destroyed" the dog, because of what she has.

  • so cute didn't know animals could get ataxia ...

  • Nice video; great choice of music. I wonder how she got ataxia. Hereditary?

  • Sad video =( A love Jack russell terier.A have puppy. She´s name is Jessy.Anna is beatiful little dog. Anna is happy puppy =)

  • Sweet little dog, we have an 19 month old JRT and she was watching Anna.

  • Love that little dog!
