  • God knows I love Mr Numan but isn't he a skinny Marlon Brando at 1:59?

  • Very ahead of its time, with the Jeep and the guns, and the hilltop house!

  • You know at the beginning of this vid I'm just now noticing that Gary actually did and could grow some facial hair but I wonder why he doesn't like it or ever grow it out proper?

I don't mean like a grizzly bear hermit but like some of it?

  • I'm sure in the context of the 80s this video would've been cooler.

  • @LetzRock1 No, it was terrible then. It's odd that a musician with such a distinctive visual style always made rubbish videos (except for Cars, which has a charm of its own).

  • @AshleyMarkPomeroy Always made rubbish videos? We Are Glass and Complex both have fitting videos and have charms of their own as well.

  • Brigitte Nielsen is in this. Red Sonja!

  • Why do I get the feeling that the reason for Gary's baldness problem and reliance on hair plugs was all of that bleaching which does keeps lifting out the color of the hair too much?

  • @jrmetmoi He's been asked that a lot. He says it is genetic - "I was gonna be a baldy". Fortunately, science caught up with his problem.

  • oh yes this is another top song from Numan

  • awesome track.....WORST VIDEO EVER.

  • Cold!

  • Guns, bitches and sportin' his ride. Gary set the pace for all future hip hop videos...Tupac would be proud

  • @junkieinformant i think 50 Cent would be prouder

  • @PICKYHEADOLOGY

    Good point!

  • jesus ! i`d forgotten what a cunt this guy was back then

  • all went tits up with the saxaphones and fretless bass and then got even worse with the chick singers. shame cos he was brilliant up till then

  • tits up? if it were not for pino palladino's fretless playing i doubt numan woul have gotten as much consideration as he did for this..numan himself said that palladino was a key influence in this album...now after that (1982) Then it was down hill

  • Great tune... Awesome bass playing.

  • He had it all with Replicas, Pleasure Principle & Telekon..then he went all funked up like this shit. He looked a complete twat too...

  • He looks alarmingly like Simon Pegg in this video...

  • Awesome song..nothing around like it before or after sound and style-wise..........I was very pissed off with my Mum after this seeing this vid as she wouldn't let me dye my hair blond....LOL....thanks for posting...

  • Where's the fucking ivory?

  • Oh my goodness! He's not even wearing a seat belt in his one side mirror jeep! That is SOOOO dangerous! I have been a fan of this guy since day one.

  • i just dont think electro and jazz work together, its like sweet and savoury, i love gary, i like his modern stuff an his early stuff, i just didnt like his jazzy and his mad max phases

  • Dude, I want a Jeep with only one side mirror!

  • This was when he was in tax exile in the usa & he was making the most of the toys the yanks can have .Like we used to untill big MOTHER said " no more " you might hurt urselves . This is a true quote " the easyest way to control your people is to disarm them " uk scum government .

  • haha yeah right, 'cos the only way to stay in control and not let 'the man' get on top of you is to have a gun.

  • this is a great song -- it kind of sounds like Prince (which is a GOOD thing) -- but Jesus, Numan is RIDICULOUS in this video. running around in the savannah with machine guns like some sort of pre-Guy Ritchie British gangsta?!? WTF was he thinking?!?!?

  • IIRC 26th August 1982. this was the TOTP video for his song - i dreamed that i still have this episode on DVD which had included Sting's 'Spread a Little Happiness' and was this the real promo that TOTP showed.

  • songs about the falklands conflict, apprently !numan was directed by bbc and not involved in pre or post production

  • Ahhhh. "The good old days... When pop stars could wonder around in videos wielding machine guns"

  • that woman.....is MY MUM lol

  • I love GN but he could be so tasteless sometimes...I hope he was kidding with this...from those cool Telekon flight suits to this?!?

  • i think he was being ironic with this video, i mean nothing can be this crap and take itself seriously...

  • what's Numan doing in the dangerous place like that? deserted mountains with rattle snakes and really dangerous animals?

  • OK song, preposterous video-he has only himself to blame for the hostile music press in the early/mid 80s with nonsense like this!

  • Amen! the hair! the clothes! awfulawfulawful. Mind you he did hit the top twenty with this steamer...

  • Is that hair attached to the hat..?

  • I havent seen this vid scince 82,waiting by the tv for top of the pops, havent seen it scince.Great video thanks.X

  • Pino Palladino on bass....Yeah!!! Awesome album actually.

  • Sounds like Gary Numan teamed up with Level 42 for this track lol. Good track.

  • This video is perverse, good tho, great song.

  • what other side you bl;oddy mororn the man has wife and kids and had more women than you ever will jebbyblobby you tiny little man

  • I recall Numan was blackballed simply because of his detached & clinical lyrics, technology fetish and gun collection. I also recall an interview with some members of BLOTTO who stated that Numan beat them down HARD in seconds offstage at the 1980 Grammy Awards.

  • a brit TV company came to Los Angeles and shot this for him for their TV program. Numan probably did not finance this video, and for a quickie vid shot in LA at his rental house in Beverly Hills its not that horrendous. IF it were shot on video tape and not film, it realllyyy would have been a sad sight.....

  • I can't get this tune out of my head. I catch myself singing it at work. Its not even one of his best. If you think about the lyric then the song probably has more meaning today ever. Even if the video is early 80's and awfully simplistic.

  • better than being a full assed faggot like you huh tlg123

  • You have to remember that this vid was made in the early 1980's days when it was cool to be portrayed as camp, like Boy George, Marilyn and Wham. I doubt Gary would bother with this image today. Its just a sign of those old gender bender times.

  • yeah, like Charlie Murphy said on Chappelle (about Prince): "the dudes who looked the most like a bitch were the ones who got all the women." that was how it was back then, it's true.

  • I liked the music, thats what its really all about. Thanks.

  • Although I think Numan is cool this video isn't exactly that cool though

  • Music is excellent though

  • What you damn yankee? so what if he is femme? alot of butches prefer each other anyway, Gary Numan is just way too cool for you

  • just listen to the sound of those keyboards,,how can anyone not like that sound

  • American TV would have NEVER played a song that had that long of intro, or sounded like this in the 80's. Americans were ripped-off with the MTV/Record Company monopoly. At least we had Night Tracks.

  • Actually, I remember seeing Devo perform "Freedom Of Choice," on the The Merv Griffin Show. Now that was pretty interesting to see Mark Mothersbaugh in a dog chain, on an afternoon TV show. LOL!

  • gary numan is a legend i just got into him a couple of months ago, his old stuff is gr8 but his new electro industrial metal sound is just unbelievable! if i can get into him being a 19 year old teenager with no numan roots many of you will now! if you like NIN u will like gary numan!

  • Shut up! will u?! all u do is ruin garu numan videos, if u don't have anything nice to say, keep your trap shut!

  • You guys are nuts! This is one of Numan's best tunes, from a musicians standpoint. Of course, I'm a bass player and any bass player in their right mind is gonna love this one.

And by the way...Guns are cool... The idiots who sometimes improperly use them are the problem.

  • god wat was he thinking great at the time but looking at it now its just like a vid 4 a gay song

  • I know the song has a very dated sound, but it's still an amazing composition. I love it! This video rocks.

  • I've never seen this until now. It sure is awful. According to Numan's autobiography he was going through a gun fascination phase in 82.

  • white boys and heroes our culture in a box ...who pulls the strings....garys awsome ..

  • First time I heard this he performed it in 1982 on The Merv Griffin show. He also did Cars.

  • I never knew he appeared on the Merv Griffin Show.

  • Have not seen this before, but I am sure there is another TOTP special version of this song, with him in his gangster suit. Know there was one for Music for Chamelions, but hey 22 years ago, maybe Im getting old and forgetfull

  • TOTP's also made a video for WE TAKE MYSTERY(TO BED)so there was two videos for that song.

  • I've never seen this before....what is there to say.... but WTF was he thinking?

  • Nice to see this gaian after 24 years. Not a bad vid for its time and the song is okay, not one of Numan's classics.

  • this was when numan was living in LA briefly. this is the cali dez. what are the complaints? that he's posing w/a gun? maybe he has more in common w/ted nugent than either nu's realize. i've always liked this video. very different.

  • lol no wonder he's running around with guns like some sort of androgynous Eazy-E.

  • ah look it's Gi Joe lol funny video what was Numan thinking when he did this we take mystery new york vid was great this soo cheesy but then again rare vid and a good song. Thanks!!!! Music for chamleons video was brill during the 82 era better than the cheesy warriors album lame

  • Good grief now i know why numan never had another number one record. that was painful to watch, thanks anyway!
