Love this video ! The song doesn't relate to the show 100% but the general theme of betrayal is in the clip, song and show so well done! Stringer killing Avons Nephew and they both ratted out each other in the end which to me was heartbreaking.
Alot of it flew over people's heads due to "Can I Get A..." for the Rush Hour Soundtrack, but that albums still goes tough...glad I'm not alone in that aspect.
@LivingForce yeah vol 2 and 3 are really underrated i could put them in and let the whole CD play. i liked hard knock life and can i get a, but i loved if i should die, jigga what and some of the songs i dont even kno the name of. vol 3 had the best intro and outro, had underrated songs with juvenile, the one with mariah carey signing the hook is really good then add in the commercial songs
Yeah, sometimes it even looks like the characters are saying the words to the song. It looks like Bodie's saying, "This is my dad." But he's saying, "James been dead." Man, I miss The Wire.
There are many Biggie songs that fit the Wire perfectly (Notorious Thugs or What's Beef?). Life After Death or Ready To Die have aged very well ....Born Again not so much imo...Don't even get me started on that Duet noise...
How about "Back in the Day" - especially when Cheese does the speech "Ain't no back in the day nigger! Ain't no nostalgia to this shit here! Just the street, and the game, and what happened here today!" I love that...
The subtlety of The Wire was completely wasted on the people who posted here. The Wire shows the hypocrisy of loyalty between criminals and the fucking seedy pointless violence that completely ruined a city. You guys are reminiscing about which of the Gangsters you like best!? Watch back to the points when; Marlo shoots an unarmed girl and the child is killed in the bath by a stray bullet. This video glamourises all that 'Gangsta Billshit'
The subtlety is definitely wasted on those who are picking their favorite gangsters. And sadly, I'd predict that represents a pretty significant ratio of the show's viewers.
But if you take it to another level, it's all a cultural commentary: the show never actually chooses sides, and posits that hood culture is a function of society rather than the bane of society. And as the show is wrought with realism, it is not surprising to see life imitating art... i.e., choose your favorite gangster.
The same is true of the Sopranos. I was a big fan, but noticed a lot of the fans of the show idolized the characters when they should have been recognizing the darkness, evil, and hypocrisy that they personified.
i respect your educated opinion. However this video is not about glamorizing gangsta bullshit. This video is about taking two great complimentary pieces. A song from Jay-Z and carefully selected clips from the Wire.
Its actually a very well done video. The video clips document the struggles and dynamics between Avon and Stringer. The music enhances the video because the lyrics are about two friends who become divided because one person had a change of heart and snitched on the other.
And the Wire does not show the hypocrisy of loyalty between criminals or indicate that the violence is pointless. I think the show tries to illustrate as best it can a certain set of problems that only a certain number of people face. And do it as objectively as possible. People must respect the complexity of the issues presented because they are very much real.
i will attempt to sum it up, it may be impossible but here goes, : Drugs+Poverty+AmericanPolitics = a never ending problem
I agree, The Wire is completely evenhanded. The issue I have is that the lyrics to the video basicly say that this stupid 'not snitching' mentality is everything, that's a twisted moral code if you deal crack for a living. The lyrics might as well say say; fuck the community and the consequences, look after your own. I agree the video is well mixed, I suspect Jay -Z watches the wire...
I know there's deep social undercurrents to it but at the end of the day it's still a story, a work of fiction. Don't berate people for having a favorite character...
@Monkies57 The Wire humanises the characters, which is why most people can't help but take a liking to the characters. It shows them as real people, instead of demonising caricatures. IMO this is why the show was so popular. It goes as close to reality as a TV show can get. It treats the subject matter and the characters with respect, allowing the audience to be drawn deeper into the story than a cops/robbers, good/bad plot. It's proper story telling.
@TheBigEase Branching off from your comment, I think a lot of people also forget the cop aspect of it. They hate on the ghetto shit all the time but the show shows the reality of what most police forces are like & the shit someone who wants to do their job has to go through.
@Monkies57 Yeah like how most hate on Season 2 because it was not gangster enough, yet that season shows who really runs the city underworld....The "Greek" and his organization.
@Monkies57 What about clay davis and the people up top? They were all innocent huh? If you going to mention the gangster mention the gangsters from the "law" side too
No The Wire shows the hypocrisy of the a bunch of piece of shit pigs who obey the arbitrary chain of command paradigm which is the reason for the pointless violence that ruins cities. If the government and police departments import the drugs and get away with it, but when black people do it they are a scourge and a plague on our "fair cities". Fuck cities. I don't think the Stringer/Barksdales are to blame since they're emulating successful Italians, Jews, other assorted parasites
great video, Avon was dumb soon as he got back out of jail he starts wildin out Stringer had them at a all time high without all of Avon's go to men like Wee-bay and byrd Stunk-em Wee-Bay was the coldest mutherfucker on the show Ice water rans thur that players veins but I did love the the Marlo Crew besides snoop she always got on my nerves buy ol mike took care of that at the end one of the best parts was at the end when you see Chris walk thur the yard and stand by Wee-bay STRAIGHT GANGSTA
