I'm an American and was in college in the late '70s. My recollection is that we did not support Rhodesia and in fact Carter would not even meet with Prime Minister Smith. President Carter was right not to meet the head of the racist colonialists Ian Smith. I don't care much for Mugabe these days. But the white rulers of Rhodesia's ambition was to create just another apartheid system like their white cousins had done in South Africa. @Yakovlievich I wouldnt compare Rhodesia to the third Reich. Rhodesia was actually quite tolerant (much more tolerant than South Africa at the time), and had good prosperity.

@heatsketch your mistake is to think that because I disapproved of Rhodesia- that Mugabe is automatically my hero. We are not all that simplistic I see Mugabe and co. for what they are: self-interested thugs and gangsters. But I also saw Ian Smith for what for what he was too. A bigoted racist who wanted blacks to form an eternal underclass. Zimbabwe's would be a better place for all without the both of them!!

@mnnh1 No, I have not forgotten. However, if you remember or look at that time, the quality of life was a damn sight better than anywhere else. Now, if you want to ask my opinion of Ian Smith? That is a totally different story. All I am saying is that what Mugabe offered was not better than what existed. Rhodesia would not of existed as it did without the blacks. A lot of credit needs to be given to them for what they did. Period.

I remember Mugabe on TV news when he took power. He said he had been handed a jewel of a country. Looks like he's turned it into a toilet bowl. Seizing farms the last few years is a brilliant move too. With food scarce and expensive (inflation rate??), take more farms out of production and further reduce the food supply. Takes a real genius to think of that. Rhodies and others from there; sorry our leaders helped persecute your nation. Not our finest moment for sure.

I'm an American and was in college in the late '70s. My recollection is that we did not support Rhodesia and in fact Carter would not even meet with Prime Minister Smith. Time has shown us that Mr. Smith and the Rhodesian people were right and the Carter administration was wrong. Hold on to your Memories and Good Fortune to the Rhodies Scattered to the Winds!

President Carter was right not to meet the head of the racist colonialists Ian Smith. I don't care much for Mugabe these days. But the white rulers of Rhodesia's ambition was to create just another apartheid system like their white cousins had done in South Africa. In fact most of them moved there after Zimbabwe's independence. And yes, no matter how bad things are now there is no zimbabwean who wish to go back to that system. Your "Rhodies" can hold on, but those days are gone forever!

I recall that too SamHainBe. I was in my radical days then, with blinders on. The radical papers I read then presented Mugabe as a freedom fighter and the Rhodies as evil white racists. Smith continued to live there til his health forced him to move. I read that he challenged Mugabe to walk with him through Black neighborhoods and see who came out alive. I also read that he encouraged his farm workers to send their children to college. How racist and evil is that??

Yeah, I guess you are right. Ian Smith was such a benevolent master. Ahhh, those Rhodesian days of white mercenary rule were just heavenly! Those blacks just don't get it. Again, it looks like it moved on to become the world's toilet bowl. It has 1 of the highest inflation rates in the world. Many of the citizens have fled to other nations. Mugabe was handed a functioning nation and wrecked it, or so it seems. Haven't been there so I obviously can't say 1st hand. But I remember Worker's World saying in the 70's that Mugabe or Nkomo and ZANU/ZAPU would lead that nation to greatness, etc. Yea, right. WW was a commie newspaper. Don't know if it is still around.

@SamhainBe Hate to break it to you but even Nixon and Johnson refused to back Rhodesia's illegal independence bid. Neither of them met with Smith. Why should they have? Kissinger met with Smith and told him (in so many words) to get his head out of his ass. That's because his head was up his ass.
Mugabe is evil - no doubt. But that does not vindicate Ian Smith by a long shot. That's like thinking Nazism was vindicated by the evils of the GDR.

@Yakovlievich I wouldnt compare Rhodesia to the third Reich. Rhodesia was actually quite tolerant (much more tolerant than South Africa at the time), and had good prosperity.

@slimv29 I'm talking comparatively, and the comparison is apt. Rhodesia was more tolerant than South Africa - but so what? Franco's Spain was more tolerant that Hitler's Germany, but it was still fascism. Tito's Yugoslavia was more open that the USSR, but it was still communism.
No government that disallows universal suffrage is worth defending. The Rhodesian government didn't practice universal suffrage. So it wasn't worth defending.

When Smith was the President, he walked everywhere, flew in local planes, and left with none of the country's wealth. There was free medical care and free education.
