No single solution is ideal for all off-road conditions or environments. In addition to a strong winch on the truck, I also carry the Maxtrax, a shovel, and some good tow rope.
My truck is further equipped with a CB radio, to contact nearby off-roaders who might provide a tow. The SSB in that radio (along with common skip conditions) usually provides enough range to handle true distress calls.
I'm currently using a modified (frequencies extended to allow CB use) Ranger SS-158EDX. I've had positive experiences with SuperStar radios in the past, so feel fairly confident with this particular Ranger version. My only complaint is the chrome faceplate, which doesn't exactly blend well with the interior of my truck. Sadly, none of the radios with black faceplates are entirely satisfactory (some minor feature or another I don't especially like).
@tank2449 Are you kiddin me ? when you go to desert a must thing to have more than 2 4X4 Vehicles.
other thing a good driver and low psi 20 or 15 psi in the tires will make you drive in soft sand like pavement LOL. No need for trees because other car can make the effort :)
