Toots was a holdout when Rastafarianism hit Jamaica; he never joined up and you you won't hear those themes in his lyrics. This is one of the reasons I use Toots & the Maytals to introduce people to reggae... because their perception of reggae is frequently of a bunch of white college kids wearing red/gold/green and smoking pot, claiming it's their religion (see Ras Trent haha). This is GOOD MUSIC, with a positive message and a good beat. Who can complain?

Yah Toots! Toots and the Maytals brought the word Reggae to the music scene. Sure, Jamaican music existed before them, but not the word "Reggae"...They are more than signifigant to reggae, they are it's roots. This guy still shreds at 65. I love their more melodic reggae - too much reggae seems to just copy Marley's style.
