@leroygab95 its a mix of both. what happens is if you can see the tube attatched to the mic, the sound from the guitar comes out of that. basically replacing his voice but he still moves his mouth like hes talking. making the guitar sound like a voice. which the microphone then pics up. look up the ghetto talk box instructional video to get a better idea of how they work if thats still too confusing.

A talk box is a tube that you place in your mouth, connected to a high-powered speaker driver, essentially replacing your vocal chords with the played back audio.  A vocoder is a far more complex devise that extracts the modulation (the "shape" of the sound, ie. the words spoken) from the formant (voice) and then applies it to the carrier (instrument). A talk box will typically produce a more intelligible sound, while a vocoder will sound much more robotic.
