It was great meeting you both and passing on the baton as we came down Katahdin. Keep us informed about your hike next year and best wishes! Gary (Hitchcock).
Mike Hanson hiked to half mile of the summit. See "The Hanson Appalachian Trail Campaign" on facebook where the full story is told using framegrabs from the upcomming video.
"Mike's Hike" has now become "The Hanson Appalachian Trail Campaign" and can be found on it's own UTUBE site. Just search for "The Hanson Appalachian Trail Campaign." With a home site we will likely be able to post from the trail as we make our way up from Georgia to Maine-for folks who want to follow our progress.
@KRYLOK Thanks for the great comment. We're hoping to change some minds and open some doors for folks who just want opportunities to pursue their dreams.
I'll be attempting a thru-hike in 2010 as well and I'd just like to wish Mike the best of luck. Speaking of documentaries about hikers who are blind - just watched a movie the other day titled "Blindsight" about a group of Nepalese children who, with assistance, were attempting a climb of a sister peak of Everest. Amazing movie and exceptionally inspirational. To Mike - I wish you nothing but kindness and support during your hike.
Thank you for the well wishes and the movie recommendation! Best of luck to you on your trail journey. We're leaving in March, we hope to meet you on the trail somewhere between Georgia and Maine!
Thanks for the comment Nikki and for the support for Mike's Hike. It's exciting to hear you're considering this hike too. Bill Irwin (see some of his videos on UTUBE) hiked the trail roughly 10 years ago. Mike is taking a different approach, not using a guide dog but just his cane and GPS technology. We're stressing both the independence of those with visual impairments and the liberating power of GPS to help folks chart a course in challenging surroundings. Best wishes! Gary.
