This Track has been Poorly Mixed. AWFUL. Why is everything in the Middle? What's happened to the Panning arrangements? The Bass is completely transparent, the Drums are hollow, & all the sounds just get tangled in what can only be described as a bluster of treble. A Total lack of justice to Imogen's last 3 albums.
It would be interesting to hear Imogen's take on this. I must admit that I feel the mix falls short of delivering the potential that this track has to offer. I still cant stop watching and enjoying it though!
Maybe because I don't listen to music for a massage, in fact I rarely pay attention to lyrics, I'm completely disappointed with this song. The others are pretty disappointing as well....my opinion of course.
I've always admired city life and how everyone in a city has their own life and their own story. This, therefore, was right up my street, giving an insight into the stories of people from what looks like an amazing city. I like the fact that it's kinda of drum and bass-y too, that's what I love so much about Tidal. This is easily my favourite of the heapsongs so far, Imogen, you never cease to amaze me <3
I fall deeper in love with her musicianship with every song!!! Imogen, you are honestly my BIGGEST idol!!!!! I hope I can become as great a musician as you one day!!!! :hearts:
@skipper25100, she's not counting 1 to 10, she's counting 1 to 8, but she's counting 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, 2,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, 3,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, etc. counting 8 counts. I love this. It's very representative of what it's like to live here. :)
One of the best songs ever, it shows, that despite everything, it is still a beautiful world around us. Way better than most of the modern „music”, Xizi She Knows have a soul.....
The latest music (by immi, with great help from y'all) is incredibly artistic, and of the kind that grows on you ~ needs a few "listen throughs". (Unless it, of course, hit ya straight away). To me...it's still a bit (messy)/too much going on. Can't wait to have the physical copy. Posted a comment saying that I miss "old " Immi, and someone replied that she'll NEVER change...well...who wouldn't want to change? Change is good, I didn't mean that I'd prefer her to repeat herself. Anyhow
@SaraMUSt Her music does evolve throughout her releases. Where for me iMegaphone reflects raw teenage emotions through simpler mixing and a rock sound, Speak for Yourself is a lot more electronic and reflects a wider range of emotions through its melodies. Ellipse is a lot more experimental, where Heap seems to discover a new way of using and mixing sounds, creating a completely new musical experience far more complex than anything else she did before.
@SimDuff Of course, this might put off earlier fans while reaching a new audience. This new album she's creating at the moment seems to take what she's found from the sound mixing of Ellipse and bringing it to a whole new level by asking for samplings and pretty much going wild with them. I personally enjoy every album in their own, distinct ways. The more music she creates, the less we can put her whole work in one genre so it's normal to be put off if you're a big fan of a specific album.
@SimDuff I totally agree with all of your points here, save the fact that I still think there's a bit too much going on in the latest work...I'm confident, still, that she'll find the "pwope' structure". (In good Immi-evolving-fashion-sense...I mean...cr@p...do you get my drift?)
@SaraMUSt You'll have to tell me how you find the actual stereo version!! See, I was appreciating something that wasn't even presented right! I probably should've paid better attention myself! At any rate, the stereo version is way more balanced :P You guys were right all along for the flatness of the sound!
@SaraMUSt And as for too much going on in her latest work, she might go back to simpler sound mixing in her future work since it's still a part of herself I guess. However, her music reflects who she is when creating it so unless she goes back to the way she once felt, she might never go back and instead keep on evolving. Simply said, her old, rebellious, dark rocking chick is still inside of her but she might not be inspired by her as much these days, being in another state of mind and place.
Imogen Heap has made the best song ever (Blanket, Jeff Beck version). So I'll love her no matter what, but this was terrible. Great that you're having a nice time in China and great that you're filming it. But the music doesn't at all go well with the video. After Neglected Space (which was an astonishingly well made piece of art) I'd expected so much more from an Imogen. Because of the bad match I had to listen a second time, with my eyes closed, to realize how good it actually was.
@64ccd You must be deaf & blind, because you can clearly hear the Chinese melodies and influence in the music. And the video matches perfectly in that it captures Chinese people from various walks of life, just living their lives which is what the song is about.
Your music always helps me go through rough times. I feel like as if though sometimes you speak to me. Thank you Imogen for being there for when whenever I've needed you <3
Everyone should buy the wonderful 3DiCD, The 3D virtual experience of Xizi She Knows. If you haven't already, I highly recommend it. Well done Andy Carne!
Love this. WOW. Great idea for a video. Very unique. From reading the blog and then seeing your new friend dancing with that yellow flag, I imagined it much the same. He is bright, but just enough to attract a crowd. Very cool and very sophisticated. Love the way you shot that gentleman driving the cab. Clever clever. And then the Skater's!!! nice build to the... Drums! Pretty damn good as you are!
BTW the sound on the video is in mono at the moment because of some technical glitch which I am told is being corrected. The sound on the record itself (available from Imogen Heap's website) is in very good stereo.
If you buy the song pack from her website it comes with a 23 minute "sound" explanation called Xizi's Bits. It explains all the sounds and the two sets of counting in Chinese as many asked about one by the girl and one by an older woman exercise instructor.
@tinkermagic My roommate said she's just counting : 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,2,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, etc. She's counting the dance measures or whatever because they go to eight instead of four, or she could just be counting eighth notes, who knows really. But it's just counting either way.
I'm blown away. Literally. The visuals are stunning and suit the magical music perfectly... I feel like I've been transported away and my mind feels so refreshed! Like I breathed the air in Hangzhou myself! Freaky...
It must have been so much fun to make this video. I love that it's daily life, injected with music and dancing and magic. And the song has the same playful beauty that we love from you, Imogen.
I love this song! I wonder how that film about Hangzhou will be released; a YouTube or Vimeo video, a standard DVD release, etc. Hope to hear about this more often. Oh, and Love the Earth too. That's coming out in April 2012, right?
What's wrong with the world? How come Lady Gaga have millions of views of those shitty songs, while AMAZING songs like this one are not recognized enough?
@tinkermagic I agree, I wish more people recognized Immi's magical talents, and at the same time I feel like I've got a special treasure all to myself and the special group of people like us that truly love and appreciate her.
@mcphersonkeane yeah thats how I actually feel she is like a treasure to me if she do get well known I never want her to change. what I want to hear is her on the radio she would definitely get more recognized.
@ManChicken There's something really deep about that dancing girl in the printing press. The way tradition keeps her content and grounded; even though drab, modern jobs which leave tradition behind... I may be looking at it too deeply though. All I know is I watch that part over and over again trying to understand what's so charming about it. :)
Classic, Immi, from the meticulous production, breaks and surprises to the massive build and the amazing ending! Love it!! :) :) :) Thanks for posting...

My second favourite after Propeller Seeds. You should try one song where you would play some of your music in reverse. I tried to listen to some of your songs like that and it was quite interesting. xxx
It's nice to experience the city you've been raving about for months. Hangzhou looks excellent and you've written an excellent song to let us all in on Xizi's secret!
This is her best heapsong yet. It resembles more her last two albums than the other songs released previously. Hopefully she'll keep going in this direction!
