I live in VA and Matthews is right. When you go to Northern VA, the people are not "southern" in their accent, it is more educated, less religious, and economically stronger than down state VA. The swing area in virginia is the Tidewater area and obama won that area in eastern virginia-it has a large black population.Southwest, Central, and NWest VA is culturally and religiously conservative and 12% black which means most Dems can't win here. NVirginia and Tidewater is 30%minority.
