To get a really good understanding of what the American government, a.k.a. the white man, put the Native Americans through forcing them from their land; then check out the PBS American Experience documentary called, "We Shall Remain." You can watch it free on their website. I think it's in 5 parts.

Then check out the history behind the Boarding Schools the government forced the Native Indians to go to...to force their culture out of them.

It is heartbreaking.

I like the movie, I like the music, I like the story, but, alas, as I read about the Indians and what happened to them as civilization moved west, I don't think any book or movie has come close to telling the real story. Again, this is great music and a great story, but remember, it was written by a white man. He was sympathetic to the Indian, but many writers are. I do not believe, however, he caught their real spirit and their real story in that time. I doubt anyone could.,

@keitheric, it is Kevin Costner's Hollywood way of saying sorry for all those really bad and racist movie roles they gave Native aAmericans for so long. I am willing to tolerate even the overly optimistic fantasy part of the film,. It was something amazing in its day. Sadly, Costner thought that he was atop of the world and flooede his career in Watrerworld later. At least he took two films to deliver amazing films better than Cameron's Avatar who screw up his space allegory of both of them.
