The song is actually meant to be sung from the perspective of a boy, grieving for the love of his life and childhood sweetheart. He remembers a time they were lost in a forest, but they didn't consummate their love even then, waiting to be married, unfortunately.... she died before they could wed. His broken heart prevents him from sleeping in his bed alone, and he find himself weary with life and wanting desperately to be with her again. ; ___ ;
It's gorgeous to hear the more interesting melody than the Sinead version but too bad Kate messes up the lyrics on the bit where she's talking about what she's doing while her family thinks she's safely in her bed, she sings "from morn until night I am stretched out at your head" but OBVIOUSLY it's "from NIGHT until MORN" - unless her family expects her to stay in bed all day!
It is not one man nor a million, but the spirit of liberty that must be preserved. The waves which dash upon the shore are, one by one, broken, but the ocean conquers nevertheless. It overwhelms the Armada, it wears out the rock. In like manner, whatever the struggle of individuals, the great cause will gather strength.
lyrics II: Do you remember the night Oh, the night when we were lost In the shade of the blackthorn And the touch of the frost? Oh, and thanks be to Jesus We did all that was right And your maidenhead still Is your pillar of light. Oh, the priests and the friars They approach me in dread Oh, for I love you still Oh, my life, and you're dead I still will be your shelter Through rain and through storm And with you in your cold grave I cannot sleep warm repeating the first vers
lyrics: I am stretched on your grave and I´ll lie here forever if your hands were in mine I´d be sure they would not sever my apple tree my brightness it´s time we were together for I smell by the earth and I´m worn by the weather When my family think That I'm safely in my bed Oh, from morn until night I am stretched out at your head Calling out unto the earth With tears hot and wild For the loss of a girl That I loved as a child
@mrvenica It is originally a 17th Century Irish poem about a young man who lost his lover. It's a really complex poem about still being able to feel her even though she is not there. Also it is noted in the poem that the couple were alone in the woods, and despite longing for each other, they never expressed their emotions physically. The voice in the poem says that this made their relationship stronger. It's a mournful and very sad poem, but beautiful, obviously :)
wow endlich gefunden, seit "alles was zählt" geht es mir nicht mehr aus dem kopf... bloß gut das ich so gerne zappe, bin eigentlich kein AWZ fan.... =)
@meatwadhows Actually it's an Irish poem, look it up on Wikipedia. DCD did an excellent version, I was actually surprised to find that they didn't compose it
that is sung very differently, not very irish at all, to fast and not enough emotion. She is a lovely singer, but there is no connection, thats missing.
@scati1971 It could be because she's not Irish.It makes a very refreshing change to hear a talented folksinger singing in her own accent NOT A FAKE OIRISH ONE.
@OnyxIdol You're very alone in holding that opinion of her talents. I such situations one should think again. Not saying you're wrong, but perhaps your sample of her work is too limited. Anyhow, we all have different tastes.
I remember Kate's interview on NPR years and years ago right about the time this album came out, and she discusses this song and it's meaning to her...
Every time I listen to this disc, I'm very thankful I heard that interview, which led me to this wonderful album...
I think all is matter of tastes, yes, this version is very emotional, magic and athmospheric, but i think in music "sound" Sinead version is more complete and original.
Today is my father's Birthday, he died yesterday. I heard this song at a dance competition several months ago. I had entered in my notepad on my phone, now I know why I did it. Thank you for this post, it is very special at this time.
Just discovered this song, but I can predict it's going to become one of my favourites. Thanks for posting-- it's hard to find, and your pictures are quite lovely. :-)

Check out Iarla O Lionard singing the original Taim Sinte ar do Thuama. Personally it is more moving without the bongos.
