    Magic.

  • Sad and beautiful...

  • love it

  • The song is actually meant to be sung from the perspective of a boy, grieving for the love of his life and childhood sweetheart. He remembers a time they were lost in a forest, but they didn't consummate their love even then, waiting to be married, unfortunately.... she died before they could wed. His broken heart prevents him from sleeping in his bed alone, and he find himself weary with life and wanting desperately to be with her again. ; ___ ;

  • This just came on my Pandora shuffle, directly after Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday. I get the hint.

  • It's gorgeous to hear the more interesting melody than the Sinead version but too bad Kate messes up the lyrics on the bit where she's talking about what she's doing while her family thinks she's safely in her bed, she sings "from morn until night I am stretched out at your head" but OBVIOUSLY it's "from NIGHT until MORN" - unless her family expects her to stay in bed all day!

  • Check out Iarla O Lionard singing the original Taim Sinte ar do Thuama. Personally it is more moving without the bongos.

  • is this in the movie Braveheart?

  • @AineIsUnderTheStairs Not that I know of. Google doesn't seem to know either...

  • @sparklybeast Google doesn't know?! The apocalypse is upon us!

  • @AineIsUnderTheStairs Tee hee! ; -)

  • @AineIsUnderTheStairs I hope not.

  • love everithing waht is celtic

  • It is not one man nor a million, but the spirit of liberty that must be preserved. The waves which dash upon the shore are, one by one, broken, but the ocean conquers nevertheless. It overwhelms the Armada, it wears out the rock. In like manner, whatever the struggle of individuals, the great cause will gather strength.

  • GREAT STUFF

  • i LOVE this song ...

  • lyrics II: Do you remember the night Oh, the night when we were lost In the shade of the blackthorn And the touch of the frost? Oh, and thanks be to Jesus We did all that was right And your maidenhead still Is your pillar of light. Oh, the priests and the friars They approach me in dread Oh, for I love you still Oh, my life, and you're dead I still will be your shelter Through rain and through storm And with you in your cold grave I cannot sleep warm repeating the first vers
  • lyrics: I am stretched on your grave and I´ll lie here forever if your hands were in mine I´d be sure they would not sever my apple tree my brightness it´s time we were together for I smell by the earth and I´m worn by the weather When my family think That I'm safely in my bed Oh, from morn until night I am stretched out at your head Calling out unto the earth With tears hot and wild For the loss of a girl That I loved as a child
  • Long time favourite!

  • I wonder why this awesome song isn´t very popular. it´s much better than some other popular songs.

  • Great! ;,)

  • hey guys, what is this song about ????

  • @mrvenica It is originally a 17th Century Irish poem about a young man who lost his lover. It's a really complex poem about still being able to feel her even though she is not there. Also it is noted in the poem that the couple were alone in the woods, and despite longing for each other, they never expressed their emotions physically. The voice in the poem says that this made their relationship stronger. It's a mournful and very sad poem, but beautiful, obviously :)

  • like it very much. i have to admit that i cried..;)

  • wow endlich gefunden, seit "alles was zählt" geht es mir nicht mehr aus dem kopf... bloß gut das ich so gerne zappe, bin eigentlich kein AWZ fan.... =)

  • @sparklybeast

    thank you very much :-)

  • @darknick78

    It's on the "Hourglass" album.

  • @MyohoSound

sorry , I didn't notice the previous reply

  • @darknick78 The "original" is a song from the band Dead Can Dance. Look it up. It's beautiful.

  • @meatwadhows thank you for the information :-) yes, it´s really good song from "dead can dance" :-)

  • @meatwadhows Actually it's an Irish poem, look it up on Wikipedia. DCD did an excellent version, I was actually surprised to find that they didn't compose it

  • @topofsm I knew that. I was drunk and assumed the quotations would express that. hah. My bad, guys.

  • rip eaf

  • Love this song and love Kate rusby...my fav is drowned lovers - so sad!!

    Are they playing the bodhran?

  • Really love this, its very well put together, thanks for posting! x

  • that is sung very differently, not very irish at all, to fast and not enough emotion. She is a lovely singer, but there is no connection, thats missing.

  • @scati1971 It could be because she's not Irish. It makes a very refreshing change to hear a talented folksinger singing in her own accent NOT A FAKE OIRISH ONE.

  • Sinead O'Conner's version of this song is the worst version ever. Rusby and Dead Can Dance are the best versions

  • @Halowithoutone - agreed

  • @Halowithoutone That''s your oppinion. My oppinion is that it's powefull sad. I like this too.

  • She doesn't have that great a voice, nor can she sing very well imo.

  • @OnyxIdol You're very alone in holding that opinion of her talents. I such situations one should think again. Not saying you're wrong, but perhaps your sample of her work is too limited. Anyhow, we all have different tastes.

  • thanks for sharing. Images are haunting... suit it beautifully. well done.

  • This song has a very "pagan" feeling to it. Very ancient, very strong.

  • interesting song. It's as though it's calm and yet not at the same time.

  • this song is so cool i like the rythm

  • wow amazing video!!! love this song SO much :) x

  • Lovely lovely lovely ...

  • i love the song! thanks for sharing......

    her voice is so powerful..

  • Beautiful version. The Abney Park one is well-regarded too: watch?v=tbcrsOb9K64

  • I remember Kate's interview on NPR years and years ago right about the time this album came out, and she discusses this song and it's meaning to her...

Every time I listen to this disc, I'm very thankful I heard that interview, which led me to this wonderful album...

  • Voice as the instrument. Sinead is great but this is better. Less turned out into the noise.

  • I think all is matter of tastes, yes, this version is very emotional, magic and athmospheric, but i think in music "sound" Sinead version is more complete and original.

  • normally not my taste of music but this song is wonderful

    greetings from holland

  • i love this song it always makes me cry when i don't even know why! its the most emotional song i have ever heard to this day!

  • Beautiful. Thank you for posting.

  • VERY NICE..^_^ SONG...

  • This song takes my into an transcended state of mind...it's like an love incantation... my soul simply crumbles... ineffable :)

  • this is a seriously stunning song and the video is goes with it well :)

  • Chills everytime i hear this.

  • Amazing song, thank for posting it :)

  • cant find the video, a rose in april of the hourglass album as its 1 of my favs

    anyone help.

  • I have to agree, sinead o'connor although she is a good artist screwed this one up. i much prefer it in this fashion, a true folk style

  • This is a very deeply felt version. I like sinead's as well. Not the concert version though

  • I think the picture are lovely and go very well with this beautiful song. Are they your own photos?

  • Yes they are. Thanks for the compliment! :-)

  • So did abney park.

  • sinead o connor ruined this song.

  • how true

  • this song is sooo good, especially the person who put together a video on tess of the d'urbevilles to it, checki it out its amazing!

  • This poem is truly amazing, and combined with Kate Rusby's haunting voice and accent it is truly a moving piece of music too.

  • her version of this poem is brilliant.

  • i prefer rising gael's version to both kate rusby and sinead oconner - check it out on itunes

  • me too but this one is amazing as well

  • This song is really great but Sinead O`Connor does it so much better! Kate has a nice voice but Sinead's vocals are better.

  • This has to be one of the most amazing songs ever, kate rusby is a legend!

  • just dicovered this song. Iwas already fond of sinead o'connors version. But this is magical. One of my favourites! Thanks for posting!!!

  • Today is my father's Birthday, he died yesterday. I heard this song at a dance competition several months ago. I had entered in my notepad on my phone, now I know why I did it. Thank you for this post, it is very special at this time.

  • Maybe your not weird at all and maybe you just have an absolutely fantastic voice!

'hard songs' vary from person to person and from where your voice is pitched.

  • beautiful song

shame its so hard to sing!

  • Just discovered this song, but I can predict it's going to become one of my favourites. Thanks for posting-- it's hard to find, and your pictures are quite lovely. :-)

  • One of my favourite songs by la Rusby.
