I was at Us83. Van Halen was an embarrassment. They were totally smashed and came on-stage drinking jack straight. Eddie kept dropping notes and David forgot lyrics on several songs. A guy threw his beer bottle narrowly missing David and David yelled back (you throw another bottle and I'll go down there and *%#& your girlfriend. I (and thousands of others) left after that. Scorpions ruled that night "they played before Van Halen". I had seen them at Gazzaris on the strip before they made it big.

Dave has always been a flashy front man, but that outfit is a bit ridiculous looking, even for the 80's!

DLR's showmanship is unmatched in all of metal/rock. I'm not saying he has the best pipes; Robert Plant, Rob Halford, Dio, Jeff Tate, Steve Perry, Jeff Scott Soto, Mark Boals, Russell Allen, Paul Shortino, etc., are better technical singers. But for pure showmanship, DLR is unmatched, and was the best frontman VH ever had. So happy he's back with them!

I saw Sammy open for Boston on their first tour and Sammy blew them away Boston technically sounded amazing, Which come to mind Brad Delp was a hell of a singer.

I think people will argue forever about who was best and who sucked, I simply think to each his or her own.

I was at this show. They were all fucked up. Especially, Dave. It was a disappointing performance overall. Alex's laser show and 4 hits of fry got me through it okay, though! LOL! If I recall correctly, Van Halen was banned from playing in San Bernardino County after that cuz Dave started getting the crowd all riled up and was telling them to attack the cops. It was the beginning of Dave's end.

Dave didn't have to worry about song structure ,his melody lines were obvious set by Eddies song structure .Sammy added melody lines that Dave could never create . Dreams is one example of a song that has song structure, melody lines and vocal range that Dave could never do .I'm a fan of both but i call it like i see it . All you people who are dissing this performance are missing the point. Live bands are NOT supposed to sound like their albums, that would be boring. DLR was the best frontman of his day, funny, athletic and while not the greatest singer, really propelled the songs along with his delivery and wails. Eddie was a great live guitarist, drunk or not and I never failed to have an excellent time when I saw them live. Van Hagar, while technically a better live band, bored me to tears. It's entertainment

Triumph may have had a perfect set, but Van Halen were the perfect closers for the festival. They had the explosive energy to pump everyone up and make them feel content at the end of the day. They may not hit the notes, but I think their fun vibe really captures the blissful beauty in a festival like this. I think being able to do that is just as hard a skill as playing an oh-so-perfect set. Let's not forget that the audience weren't exactly sober at this part in the day either!
