I'm not yawning. I'm not yawning. Very hard to play and well done. Recording obviously does not capture the moment to it's fullest. Every time a Chopin piece is played it is always different. I could listen to this piece for eternity and she did a good job.
@AhaBach4Life The piano is clearly in tune and I must disagree further--the performance was quite good, not one that would elicit a "yawn" from audience members. Bravo to Ms. Avdeeva!
good job, well done. though its chopin's personal favorite ballade out of the 4, its nonetheless a nasty one. it sounds simple, but anyone who played/prepared this piece seriously knows what im talking about here.
She played that awkward passage from 2:20 to 2:26 correctly. What a relief ! Most interpretations I have heard slur the notes to camouflage the difficulty. Yulianna did play it fast, but articulated each note clearly. What a massive talent !
@ungava100 I totally agree. The same applies to passage 5:31 to 5:32 where two of the melody notes EbDCBb do not coincide with the beats and in many performances are not stressed. Her interpretation is wonderful, she didnt win the chopin competition 2010 by chance...
@mdlayt64 Send him back to piano technicians' school in any event. I've been fighting that for 30 years. European tuners stretch the octaves to the point where if you're hands are more than 3 octaves apart, you're playing almost in two different keys. Late Beethoven sounds like quarter-tone music. Then they needle the be-jesus out of the hammers (to enable bad pianists to sound "brilliant") which accounts for that honky-tonk sound. Pity, because Yamaha concert grands are SUPERB instruments.
@mathandmusic1 If you're referring to sensitivity in regards to dynamics, keep in mind that this isn't a professional recording. Low quality microphones can't really accurately capture the true sound of a piano...
@galapz I don't really think you can say "I would like to hear her play on Steinway" because after all Richter in his later years always played Yamaha's and he was still one of the most fantastic pianists to have ever walked the earth. The piano should to a certain extent irrelevant to the performance because after all it is still possible to produce a beautiful sound on a Yamaha. A lot depends on the pianist. Playing on a reputably better piano e.g. Steinway is merely an aid...
My IQ goes up 20 points every time I listen to Chopin. Then I just had to scroll down, and saw some of these comments, and back down to idiotville I went.
@newFranzFerencLiszt Well yes it's a jury, but it's also a jury that happens to contain several of the best musicians alive today... I think their opinion matters a lot more than some youtuber's...
@mwu42251 actually the opinions of youtubers does matter because we are the ones who are going to buy (or not) her cd's,and go/not go to her concerts.
@nousernamewhatsoever the reason i say that the opinions of YOUTUBERS doesn't matter is that sure, the opinion of her audience matters, but I would say that hearing a live performance and hearing a youtube recording are very different experiences... youtube cannot even come close to capturing the essence of classical music. I listen to recordings on the internet purely for academic studying of interpretations. usually fame on youtube comes from fame in real life, not the other way around.
Have you ever heard of a rubato? I doubt it. You exert yourself to be an expert on tempo in music but your knowledge of music is very poor. Remember that Chopin often used a rubato or the practice of playing with expressive and rhythmic freedom. And Avdeeva made a wonderful use of that practice in her rendition of Chopin Ballade No. 1. So you’d better keep silent and not make fun of yourself.
She may be an interesting interpreter but how can one know, with this ugly sound? It's possible she didn't have another choice of piano here, but whyever choose a Yamahaha if there is any other? It's simply criminal to allow these plastic boxes onto a classical stage, and the lasting damage to the next generations' idea of true sonority is incalculable. Another nail in the coffin of Classic.
The predictable winner would have been Wunder, he is what all those Polish critics wanted Chopin's music to sound like, you know, like Zimmerman. I'm happy the jurors didn't fall into that trap this time, choosing a performer with a keen sense of originality and expressiveness. Bravo Yulianna!
A good, competent performance. There was some fire, which proves she has an uncommon talent. Still, I'm not ready to class her among the greats yet. I wasn't swept away.
brava!! you are so original and sensitive! i'm studying this ballad just now, so, even your exibition isn't technically perfect, i'll take it as a landmark for mine! (excuse for my bad english, but i'm italian) Brava once again :D

To be fair, it's a pretty prestigious thing to win the International Chopin Competition.
It was won by pollini, argerich, zimerman and yundi li, all amazing pianists, so it's not really 'just' a competition.
