read his biography. he was actually a really shrewd guy. and he obviously didn't do have the shit he wrote about. it demystifies and also makes me respect him even more as a man, because he also worked his ass off. it didn't fall into his lap.
You guys should stop by Movie gallery if you have one in your local area. They are going out of business, so you can pick up a copy of this movie for less than 5 bucks. I'd recommend getting a few bottles of wine to watch it, too. :D
It all begun as a mistake. But Hank,I'm more and more convinced that it will end like one too.RIP.And I mean it.Rest In Peace,Hank,You deserved it.You knew the life even too good, but you never gave a chance to life, maybe you was just to realist for this ugly world.Anyway,RIP,we love you.Cheers to all from Croatia.
Bukowski is a saint. No one else put their finger on it like him, cut through all the crap and got right to the heart of it. I can read Bukowski and feel like I know exactly what he's talking about. Some literary critics put too much stock in the tricks, bells and wistles. In the end, all of that can dazzle you, but in the end it means nothing. It's still just a load of baloney. Bukowski put down what was important and what was real to him. I think that's why so many people appreciate it.
Deseperate measures call for desperate times. Then again, I could sit here drinking, give a fuck less, & fall out the grinder just like the rest, but with more flavor.
I can't believe he could do this stuff on a typewriter...that's almost a one shot machine. It has to come out fast, right out of the gate, leaning into the turns and down into the stretch. The rest of us chisel down boulders. Look Ma, I made an ash tray !

Run religious figures, and by extension those who find solace in them, into the muck with mockery and yet god forbid someone finds fault with a talented artist. One can appreciate the poetic craft of this particular dead mans work without deifying him or excusing the uglier aspects of his public expression. No Second Coming here just another displaced ego and the supportive legions who find truth in profanity and disease.
this is a very moving picture (no pun). to me, it showed the life of someone who was transforming, working thru demons & coming out the other side into peace & reconciliation w/himself & even the world... and one of my teachers was in this film, so that was cool to see. bukowski truly looked like a ravaged lion, a beautiful one.
my sister walked in me me watching this movie and said "mysoganist pig," to which i said "all your pre- WW2 and most post-WW2 literary giants were womanizers. their work stands as it is. please get over yourself."
Why couldn't they have used music by FLIPPER, or the GERMS? (but seriously, 6billionghosts, I love those bands on your faves. I've seen FLIPPER live, several times)
I saw FLIPPER a few times in the 1990's when they played in Seattle, and once in the 1980's when I lived in Minneapolis. I've always been a GERMS fan, but they never played in Iowa, where I lived when Darby was alive.
Flipper never got their due, but they were influential.
their sound and attitude (germs as well as flipper) have had a huge impact on me. my music/writing/whatever i do is not as err nihilistic as theirs was at times, but the passion and intensity and chaos has definitely changed the way i live.
had the original bass player died when you saw them in 90's?

The background music is annoying and superfluous. But it's taught me the meaning of pain - pain without reason, and I'm grateful for that.
