135 is elievable and relatively easy to do. Since I did some mods to my 600 Kat, it NEEDS more gearing so I'm going up one tooth on front sprocket, then I shouldn't be looking for 7th gear ;o)
Katanas are not bad bikes if u keep them simple. But when u try to make them cool by adding awful looking flames they just come off as dumb. Let me rephrase that the 2006 katanas are nice, anything prior are just plane trash. I have a 2006 kat my self

Its my first bike, although I've ridden different models. I actually prefer the 1990 over a new suzuki that I rode. It is very hard to stall as it is easy on the clutch and the seating is quite unusually comfy.
@vladdesa would agree on that I got a 1989 model one and it goes well and is ok to ride for 100 miles no problem and no worrys of any fuel injection or ecu problems that newer bikes seem to get..A personalised number plate on mine and you would struggle to tell its 20+ years old..

first off i payed less than 1/2 of there bikes, it gets better mpg, and after our 6 hour ride through the Allegheny national forest, im the only one who can still walk the next day.

I just bought a used katana as my first street bike. everyone i talked to said to start with the katana so i did and im glad for it. it has decent power and i dont have to worry about it coming up on me. I agree that it is a very good starter bike. im sure ill graduate to a ninja or cbr eventually but ill still stay at 600cc. Not ready for the big boys yet.

did you get the Katana? If not yet heres some more input. I have the 05 600 Kat. Its my first bike. Its heavy but stable as hell at any speed, not too mention comfortable for those 4+ hr after noon rides. For me, it has enough power to put a smile on my face. Pulls pretty good especially up in the 5500 rpm range (powerband on 600 Kats). Reply to what you ended up with if anything.
Funny story... I was determined to get a bike asap, so i called a guy about testing the bike. I had cash in hand, but the tag agency was closed for some fluke reason that day, so i didn't have a chance to get the endorsement on my license. The seller of the katana said no test ride w/o the endorsement (smart choice) and so i was pretty bummed out. On the way home i saw this beautiful V Star 650 on the side of the road, and bought it that day. I love it, but i hope to add a sport bike soon ;-)
and yes i am american and i am saying we have huge egos. i see more and more dumb kids going out and getting gsxr's, R6's, and CBR's as forst bikes. its dumb. they end up dead. and then after 6 months they feel confident about getting a 1000 or a busa. its dumb if you ask me. the katana is a great bike. for beginners or veterans
i dont understand why people hate on the katana so much. it has considerable power, enough to get up and go on the highway. it is very comfortable, it isnt a naked tour bike so it has some sense of sport, they can be customized to look good as show bikes, and they are reliable. the only down side is carburettors. why do 95 percent of these people hate on the katana and not the much less powerful gs500 or ninja 500r or the ninja 250r lol. it makes no sense to me. amercans and their egos i guess

I have an 02 katana 600, stock except for a yoshi pipe, I can hit 130 on mine, takes a few seconds to get there, but it will do it. I have put 5k miles on it with no problems, and it gets 45 and up gas miliage. nice bikes for the average thrill seeker.

the katana uses the same oil cooled gsxr engine that was used back from 86-92, but afterward the gsxr went to the water buffalo. the only difference in the motor were the intake cams and the "r" came with the factory 4-1 header, instead of the 4-2. the 600 and the 750 are the same engine, just the 600 is a sleeved down version of the 750 in both the "f" and the "r" model. so weight is the only key in the race here.
if you were to just to buy parts that fits your bike, your no different than the next man. and to say that "get a real bike"...why is that gsxr is better than a kat, some of us actually like to ride are bikes more than 20miles a day. i dont know too many gixxer riders that can withstand a 500mile ride....id like to call the fair weather riders....wow you can do a wheelie...fuckin squid
